I'm looking to replace my old PC, its the main one my wife uses and its the one that I setup to learn Windows 2000 Server back when I was studying for my MCSA. It's time to replace it so I'm looking for a PC to replace it. Question is: We currently have
a dial up connection that at times we share. My wife surfs the web, and I open a connection to the box via terminal services and email and do some basic stuff over IRC. Very low bandwidth usage
My question is: If I recall correctly under XP I can have remote
access but it takes control of the person's desktop? XP Home logs the person out or something like that? Can someone please clarify or guide in the best direction?

The Remote Desktop feature in Windows XP will only allow one 'concurrent session' - so you can be logged on locally, or remotely - but not both.
Remote assistance allows you to interact with a users session whilst they are still logged on - but there has to be someone sat in front of the PC to 'accept' the activation of that feature. -
During the betas for SP2 it was possible to have two users logged in, one on the console and one via Remote Desktop. This was removed from the final release.

you could hack something together with Remote Assistance which allows Terminal Services access to the console session.

But he doesn't want to take over whatever his wife is doing, he wants to be able to open a concurrent session.
Looks like you may be stuck using 2003 Server if you want to be able to do Terminal Server stuff. -
If you are able to term. serv. to this machine, then it seems you should be able to just as easily use ICS to share the net connection.

Jo, in the past you mustve connected to the other PC using a LAN in your place. If all you are looking to do is share the net connection, why dont you use ICS on Windows XP, simply share the dial up connection to the network and you or your wifes machine (depending where you put the modem) should be able to remotely dial up the internet when it needs remote access. The XP machine will act as a DHCP server and become a gateway for the other client. Its been a long time since I used that functionality but im pretty sure its there. Alternatively doesnt RRAS on W2K Server have demand dial? Again its been so long since I used dial up it really at the back of my mind......just some thoughts around the TS issue tho.

SSSTU, Question is will ICS work with the new box being a windows box and me using a linux box? I just used TS because it was simple

Yes, ICS works with Linux too.
