Name a piece of software out there that doesn't have flaws.  And yes, Shooby-Shooby do-w0p, I do own an Knoppix disc and have messed around with KDE and Gnome and OpenOffice and other open source software.

Just because you don't see any flaws out in the open does not mean they do not exist.  I'm personally tired of upgrading.  If I have to buy new hardware because parts break down, I understand that (to a point).  But buying an OS for your personal home PC isn't like buying a car where the frame of the car eventually rusts out or enough parts start breaking down so you cut your losses and buy something else.  All you have to do is re-install.

List of reasons not to buy Vista:

• Vista employes PUMA, POP, PVP, TPM, and a whole array of DRM technologies
  • By not buying Vista for this reason, you show to Microsoft, and indirectly to the media conglomerates, that you won't stand for it
• Vista's non-aero skin doesn't look as aesthetically pleasing as alternative skins already available for Windows XP
• to run Vista with Glass you'll need one of today's high-end video cards
  • In 2003, they said the entry-level models in 2006 would be fast enough, but they're not, users of cards like the GeForce 6200 won't be able to run Aero at 1280x960 and run any really demanding apps at the same time
    
• Most of Vistas's 'core' technologies will be backported to Windows XP, thus nulling any reasons to upgrade based on 'foward-compatibility' (at least whilst Windows XP is still officially supported by Microsoft)

• I don't buy the DRM is evil thing. Plus I want my computer to play HD-DVD
• Looks better than Luna. And there is always Classic.
• Even the betas manage Glass with ease on a GeForce 5200, so I'm not too worried.
• Most? WPF and Indigo are hardly most.
• Fast User Switching on a Domain for fricks sake! Can life get better than that, eh? Eh?

With all new software there are always people who go against the grain and swear off ever using the product because the current one "works just fine". Despite what you might say now, you'll probably be using Vista within a year of its release.

HD-DVD with substancially less "permission" than DVDs or VHS; if you've got children (and live in a region with "Fair Use") you're going to hate not being able to make backup copies

I get the feeling that "Classic" will be deliberately nerfed so that no-one uses it. Consider Windows XP, the "Start Panel" looks horrid when using it in non-skinned mode.

...my Netlogon screen defaults with the domain as the default option in the list.

Probably out of necessity rather than desire.

First of all, anybody who bitches about Vista and talks about how they will not upgrade, must agree to cease all bitching about XP, or 3.1 or whatever it is they are using that is "good enough".

Second, I'm starting to get to the point that when I hear people say that they don't care about Vista, I wonder whether this is their first time on Channel9. I wonder whether they have ever read a single shred of text, or watched any of the videos about Vista.

It just annoys me to see all of the vista sux0rz threads. They all have one common thing. The poster ignores the 10,000 good things and picks on a few pixels that they don't like.

My apologies to anybody that I may have needlessly offended. Software is my passion, it excites me more than a whole lot of other things and I don't enjoy people complaining about little things. You know, the whole "Cut down all of those trees, so we can see the forest" mentality.

With respect, that's the difference between having your home set up with AD and using it in the "real world" - I curse the lack of FUS on a regular basis. There is nothing worse than being in one of our Research labs (a fair walk from my desk) and needing a terminal so I can Remote Desktop to a machine, only to find that all the unoccupied desks are left locked...

As do our systems. And I've repeatedly told people they don't ever need to change it. Do you me that makes any difference? And this is a Computer Science department...

I wanna hear you say "I dont buy the DRM is evil thing" when you lose hundreds of dollars in music because of DRM.  While I do agree the non-Glass UI is not as visually appealing as Glass, I do think the new UI is still better looking than XP.  I dont think the hardware requirements will change much between now and RTM to warrant new machines.  Pretty much if your PC's can run the CTP's you will be able to run the RTM and I had it running on a P3 933 mhz.  While in the past I said I wouldnt buy into Windows Vista, I think I might go ahead and get it, not necessarily for new machines, in June I plan to be running a Mac primarily, but to upgrade my 4 home machines because no Linux distribution can even hope to touch Windows Vista now.

That's cool.  Practical uses: receptionist machines need to be constantly staffed, but users take breaks; machines in offices where multiple people are meeting simultaneously, so you can show an app from the POV of many different users in a demonstration; small offices where there are only a few computers but more users; etc.

For me, Vista is gonna bring a whole host of new tech and new functionality to my world that is going to make my and many other people's lives a lot smoother.

There is far, far more to Vista than what meets the eye (which in itself is a lot).

So how do you log into a different domain or the local machine?

Using DOMAIN\username (or .\username for local machine). I don't know if you can use username@DOMAIN forms though, but some users are more familiar with that notation.

We'll see, its not been an issue so far. What surprises me most is the complaining about HD-DVD, when Mandatory Managed Copy will actually make the format more flexible in terms of how you use the content than current DVDs (ignoring the fact that CSS was cracked).

For all I know, the dropdown is not going to come back, and this is not just a recap. For professionals, this is alright, they can write the domain name in, however for less experienced users using more than one domain frequently (might be a rare case, but I have seen that a couple of times) it might be a pain in the neck. Especially if yuo make typos otfen.

The DRM thing has struck me as a lot of fear and handwaving. I've purchased some music from MSN. When I got my new laptop, I copied the protected music over along with the unprotected stuff. The first time I tried to play a protected song, Media Player prompted me for my passport credentials; after I was authenticated, all protected content played without issue or any noticable difference between unprotected music. Also, I was able to revoke the rights for my music to play on my old laptop through my account, thereby avoiding having to lose one of my alloted copies to hardware I'm not going to use again. In short, the total impact of "tainting" my music collection with DRM protected music has been absolutely negligable.

I'm certainly aware of "boil the frog" type scenarios in which media conglomerates could restrict what we're permitted to do, but honestly, so long as DRM doesn't affect people like me in any noticable way, I'm not going to get upset. One of the glaring flaws at early DRM systems is that the customer had to explicit manage the license files. I remember reading an article in which the author was absolutely furious that he, having taken the "high road" and ripped his CD to WMA with DRM, found he could not play those CDs by merely copying the WMA files. The solution is simple: (1) if you rip CDs, don't bother with DRM, and (2) music you buy online should be managable through your account without having to keep track of the license files.

I hate the fact that DRM constrains which devices I can play my music on, and I really hate it when DRM is abused by media companies for obnoxious things like forced ads and region locking on DVDs. That said, this whole "DRM is teh 3v!l" thing is just rubbish.
