Because it doesn't. The Japanese text isn't smoothed, and if you use both Japanese and Roman characters in the same sentence, especially in vertical text, it looks off.

Yes, I remember that from a Bill Hill video or two... I also noticed the Japanese  characters were larger to compensate for a larger number of strokes.  I was simply pointing out that if I knew Kanji, I would have had no problem reading iStation's haiku.

None of the Japanese fonts in XP support ClearType, regardless of whether you're using the English or Japanese version. It's not a limitation of XP per se, but of the fonts; if I copy the Japanese fonts from Vista to XP, they work fine with ClearType as well (of course, Vista has had some improvements in ClearType so it still looks better there).
