I am hopefully getting this 2 year old server from a local business in the next week; I accepted it without knowing the specifications, but I am pretty sure it has good storage as it was used to keep the data of about 10,000 clients, possibly more.
Being new to any form of server, I have a few questions:
1) What sort of stuff should I use if for considering that I already have a host for my site?
2) Will it be hard to configure, I am pretty certain it has Windows NT installed; well that is what I gathered from the company?
I don't have that many files to store on it as a file server; about 7Gb of music and video, less than 1Gb of photos, and possibly 1Gb of other documents. This makes me think that lots will be wasted unless I start taking lots of photos really soon. ![]()
Thanks in advance

You just need a file share for network access? Will this be at home? What else do you need besides a file share? -
And with NT 4 on it might not be worth it? How old exactly is it? YOu will want to upgrade the OS

It will be at home, I will use it for file sharing, but I want to know what else I can use it for; maybe data logging?

I am not exactly sure what OS it has as I have not spoken to the IT admin at the business that it is coming from; I can probably obtain this information by tommorrow evening.

There are many things you could do... there are several FOSS projects that will enable you to turn that box into a full fledged DHCP server/firewall, or a PBX box. Those are the two most interesting options to me, other than hosting a file server.
I just installed Server 2003 on my box tonight so that I can get back into C# Development... if you can get your hands on that (if the system can handle it) you could play around with that?
