Will this ever end? Somebody sent this link to me. I'd almost classify it as harrassment.

Personally, as a beta tester, I've seen the gradual improvements since 5308 (and unofficially since 4054). I'd have to say it'll be worth the wait, and I'd rather it not need four service packs like w2k has so far.

I think the Linux developer community will scramble once they learn that Vista means buisness. Hopefully Vista will force them to get off their fanny and improve Linux or else be beaten by Windows at it's own game.

Funny you mention that. The other day I asked some long haired developer I met at a convention about Gnome (just out of curiousity since I like to learn new technologies) and we got into an argument. He started gesturing with his arms like he was flapping a set of wings. Then I made the mistake of saying "so, I take it that Linux has yet to take off eh?"

Frigging fanboys. CTP's are not betas. Beta releases are labelled Beta. CTP's are just that - Community Technology Previews. Snapshots that the dev community gets to whet their appetite.

Yeah, they are, when the people viewing the code know what the hell they're talking about. Linus' Law (see *) does hold true in some circumstances, but I often wonder if there's a critical mass where that law falls apart.

Open Sourcing Windows would be a disaster. You'd have god knows how many "experts" sending in "patches", and each of these "patches" would have to get reviewed by somebody who DID know what they were doing, further reducing the amount of time they can spend on writing important code.

This article is just another "OMG OSS IS TEH R0X0RZ WIND0ZE IS SUX0RZ". It was written to a community that already agrees with the author (god knows why) and designed purely to give said author "mad OSS props" whilst lacking any substance whatsoever.

Can you tell I loathe these sorts of OSS advocates?

Was that Beer? I hope you kicked some linux-lover butt.  That is funny.  Some people need to get a life. 

Ok, I'm looking at it from a different standpoint.  Who cares if Microsoft will woo any Linux, Mac, OS/2, BeOS, Solaris, ... whatever... users.  The question is, will they convince me, a long-time Windows XP user, to upgrade?

I'm not about to make my final judgments of the operating system based on 5308.  But so far, it's looking like Microsoft is taking a direction with Vista, including IE7, that I don't want to go.  My organization has an MSDN subscription; we will be able to download and install Vista the day it is released.  But will we?  I doubt so.  I'm not even sure if we will install Vista on most machines by the end of 2007.

Vista has not convinced me that I need to go through the trouble of upgrading... am I getting alot from it?  Is it even better, overall, than XP?  And of course, why would I ever pay for a home license if I'm not convinced that upgrading for free is a good idea?

I find it odd that a website devoted to Linux seems to have an obsession with Windows...

That there is a very good point.

I really don't think you have to worry about a winner. I have not downloaded any of the betas from msdn but I am pretty sure MS knows what its doing when it comes to an OS. It seems weird to have to wait until next year but no one knows the OS like MS.

I'm now XP-free in my office, I've totally cut the cord (the only XP in my office is on the "safe build" partitions on my test machines, and that's only there because the tool I use to manage my upgrades requires it).

I've self-hosted Vista as the only OS on my laptop from 5320 up until Mondays build, every single build has improved in quality (every Monday, I upgrade my laptop to that days build).   My laptop's a 2Ghz Centrino with 512M of RAM, running Vista Ultimate (in other words, all the bells and whistles), and it runs just fine (to be honest, it pages more than I like, though that's getting better).

My dev machine (a 3 years 3.1 GHz P4 with 1G RAM) runs this Wednesday's build with glass enabled (replaced the on-motherboard video card with a AGP Radeon 6800U), again Ultimate edition.

In all honesty, I've been totally happy with the quality of the system, and I see day-to-day how much better the experience is getting.

Wow....  reinstalling once a week.  Sounds time consuming and painful.  But it must be really cool to see the improvements as the days go by...  I wish I could do that.

What I'm truly thinking of is that I have no idea why Microsoft might not just do such an easy step: open-source their system. Maybe MS is afraid of everyone laughing on their code? Or it is afraid of (oh my) someone actually stealing some of those brilliant ideas like how to use 15 cases in dispatching? Maybe, they think it will get cracked in seconds like, you know, those always cracked damn open-source browsers like Firefox in comparison to stone-of-stability closed IE6?
My answer is not specified, I think that it's usual greediness of business.

Well, it is still fun competition of MS and OO community and I am going to go and bring some popcorn, anyone wants some?

I don't think they're sitting on their fanny. Xgl has been great so far and will probably be stable enough to include by the time Vista is out. Other projects like GNOME and Mono are constantly improving, too. There are some seriously impressive Mono apps like Diva which prove that Mono is more than a novelty.

Ship Vista when it is ready.  And ready better be soon.

Linux-watch is nothing more than a personal opinion blog, hosted by a biased self-proclaimed 'expert', and spends more time bashing Microsoft than actually 'watching' Linux.

It's a waste of cyber-space.

It's a classic example of why the Linux zealots will never get critical mass... they are too busy crusading about trying to convince everyone with how 'superior' they are, to actually make any progress capturing the hearts & minds of the real users -- the people who couldn't give a toss about how it all works, so long as stuff happens when they click on that button they are used to.

they already are beaten long time ago, that was in -99 when l00nix was the hype of the year and didnt deliver

linux like unix will never ever get into the mainstream desktop market for obvious reasons, not human usable beeing one of them
