Hi everybody,
is it possible for a normal dude, like me, to write a game for the xbox? I have only seen big companies to publish games for it, so there must be something that limits little companies/private persons to do their own stuff.
What is required to write a game for the Xbox?
Edit: I'm not going to write a full game, btw, I'm just trying to understand and perhaps do a tech demo, if possible.

Google for "homebrew xbox", that's what you're trying to do.
"proper" development for the XBox is only possible with an SDK/GDK from Microsoft, which includes a "special" version of the console (that doesn't suck) but these are released under strict NDA. -
Oh well, that sucks. Is that going to change with XNA?
-
XNA's objective is to make it easier and cheaper to develop for. It also brings it to one common ground for Xbox and PC games.
You can develop small games...like Xbox Live Arcade. Because they are small, it is open to almost anyone. But, you will need a dev kit for that. -
Do you know where i could get that dev kit? and perhaps how to bring the app then on the xbox (for testing purpose)?
-
All the homebrew xbox development is done using pirated copies of the official xbox sdk. The GBA and Dreamcast both have GNU development tools ported, and would be more legit choices for homebrew games.

Here is a link to a CTP of XNA.
I haven't used it. So, i dont know exactly what it involves.

The above link is not a link to the actual XNA, but to XNA Build. XNA Build is a build system that integrates with the team system to make the process of coding large scale games easier.
The Actual XNA System or XNA Framework has not been released and there is no current time frame for the release.
As for needing a Dev kit you are more then likely right, but using the framework will mean that the applications that you do write on the PC will be easier to migrate to the XBox 360 when you can get hold of a dev kit. -

It works great for all ranges of game size. For example for a game I am making I am using a 3D modeler called Wings3D, I have a 2nd tool that converts the wings files to my own format. So I can have XNA build use the 2nd tool to convert the files when I do a build. Very useful and works with all sizes of games or any program that has alot of art assets.

No it isn't there is a open source XDK, though it sucks balls.

Hey little guru,
Nice to see that there are some people out there thinking about this. We are actually in the process of trying to assemble a few people to do exactly what you mention ie independant game creation. This article that we posted on our site when I met a few people in LA might be of interest to you http://www.gamerscommunity.co.uk/news.php?id=125
I dont know if you would be interested in getting involved with an independant game, but a few of us had a chat about it today. If you are, go onto the forum and leave a message for I12BaTree, or Frantic_Monkey. We are currently at the stage of adapting various open source games and have some great ideas for something a bit bigger - though obviously not the resources.
