Sony needs cash and lots of it, there will be some kind of revenue model in their somewhere trust me. Sony aren't going to give anything away they can't afford. Fully Linux isn't going to write decent games? Just gives the machine access to lots of stuff it wouldn't normally have and a legion of free sheep developers that have been pre-programmed that their mission is to pss-off Microsoft.

This one is confusing me, I just dont see were they are heading with this. If they want to stop pirated games from been played on it then why have an open source o/s. It will take no time for people to get round it since they have the source right in front of them.

Sony have lost der minds, 1st a $600 price tag, then news of the cheaper system having loads of missing stuff, then the controller copying cat from the Wii and now this.

I am just looking forward for my 360 and HDTV to come at the weekend Smiley

Why? It's fairly easy to do, allows Sony to call it a computer (and thus gain various import tax breaks) and makes it possible to flog a few extra boxes to a handful of people who think they'll suddenly be able to write cool Linux games.

Of course in the grand scheme of things, nothing will come of it. It's as pointless and obscure as the PS2 version of Linux. XBox Live is what they need to target to stand any chance of winning the console wars and at the moment, I'm not convinced they're in a position to do it.

This could actually be the biggest boost for Linux they'll get.  A closed hardware platform, a company with a vested interest in making sure all the peripherals work right, a locked in target audience.  If there's anything that could potentially bring Linux to the masses, this is it.

It would be slick if the XBOX had a full windows interface hidden in there somewhere...  Maybe Windows Mobile, or the Tablet edition?  Something for us developers to play with for free.

The PS3 uses the CELL processor. Since Linux is open-source they are able to compile the source code specifically for that processor.

Windows is only an x86 OS and the full source code isnt available. This means that Sony couldnt compile it specifically for the CELL. Windows is also not free, so it isnt a cost effective solution. Very few would pay an additional $100 or so for an already outlandishly priced system units.

I dunno about a 'full windows interface', but the original xbox runs Win2k Embedded (or some form of it).There are some homebrew apps (like XBMC and KAI) that allegedly hook into the embedded system through API Calls.

Also, you can very well install Linux on an original Xbox and have it do anything you like.

The original xboxes controller ports are just modified USB ports and retrofitting a keyboard into one is a fairly simple task.

And you can write homebrew (although clunkily because MS were baztardz about releasing genuine XDK's)

Why didn't you sell your code, then (in the form of a product)? You could have always taken his code and turned it into something even better. Of course, this assumes you used the GPL in the first place.


We'll continue the detail of this conversation offline, but basically disillusionment was the reason I didn't pursue it, yes it was under GPL, which at the time and the country I was in (unlike now) meant sqwat.

I didn't mind anyone using my code and making it better, or even selling it, but it was more than just the code, it was also the idea which was just ripped off. The worse thing was that the Linux community hail it as a killa-app and I never got any credit. My voice was lost in a hail of false praise.

I'm not a megalomanic but it would be nice not to have to pay a morgage and send my kids to a nice school and not a comp.

That's probably my main issue, too...the stealing of the actual idea. I suppose that is a known risk going in, but I can see how someone could completely take over your idea and claim it as their own (I've had people do this to me before with other things). I'm also glad the laws changed (too little too late now I suspect in many cases). I'm not sure what could be done to counter that issue.

It would be nice if you were forced to credit anybody that has ever worked on a product, although I suppose over time that gets out of hand, too.  



If you license your code under the GPL, it's NOT stealing if I come along and grab your source code, recompile, and say it's my app. As long as I give back any improvements I make, you can't complain.

This is one reason that Microsoft is so anti the GPL. There's no way to make an application differentiated in such a world.

Differentiation (er, scarcity) is what people pay for.

Getting credit? Inventors rarely get enough credit for their inventions. Most people don't care who invented something.

Lets hope that Sony bundles a desktop environment with it. Linux would be useless to gamers without one.

Anyway I doubt anyone will buy a PS3 for it's Linux distribution. They will buy it to play games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Teeken 6, Final Fantasy XIII,
Gran Turismo HD, Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway, and more.

This is one reason that Microsoft is so anti the GPL. There's no way to make an application differentiated in such a world.

Getting credit? Inventors rarely get enough credit for their inventions. Most people don't care who invented something.


Thats why dual-licensing licensing exists. If I remember correctly, the BSD license is worse in this respect, in that it allows the other parties to not only take your code but to market and sale it for their own profit. They really only have to acknowledge where the origional code came from.

I wouldn't buy one JUST for the Linux distro, but i think it may tempt me into buying one a lot earlier, for slightly more peanuts.

Indeed, there is a good chance this is just go to turn into an all out fanboy flamewar again, and to throw my share of petrol onto the fire...

The GPL is a license which has been proven to work, maybe not in all cases, but it is a successful license which creates around it a great development model.

The GPL promotoes open development which can be best seen through the Linux kernel. It is my main backup, a kernel, which was originally mainly developed by hobbyists, but now is developed by and promoted by large multinational companies.

However, this thread was not about the merits of the GPL and so in the interests of not derailing the thread and not starting a pointless back and forth, I am not going to reply to this any more.
