Hi Everyone,

We're in the process of planning out our next major update to Channel 9. We're starting this with this post thread here in the Coffeehouse.

As many of you have noticed we've been doing a fair amount of work building out the recently launched 10 site. We have another update planned for 10 that should launch in the next couple of weeks. When that update is complete we plan to move back onto Channel 9.

Long time Niners know that Channel 9 is built on a mutation of the ASP.NET Forums (the predecessor to community server) and it has become difficult to update. With the launch of 10 we set off to build a new codebase that we could grow into for all of the sites that our team is asked to create. With 10, bit by bit we're getting the base infrastructure required for Channel 9. In fact if you look closely at the site, you'll notice the recent additions of a media library and soon there will be forums.

Our dream is to have one code base across our sites, but preserve the tone, style and integrity that is 9.

Our curent thinking is to do two updates to Channel 9. The first would include a homepage redesign to simplify and also to improve visibility to the large amount of content being created on Channel 9. In this release we'll also perform a number of bug fixes and minor feature updates. These will be completed in the short term and our hope is have it released somewhere around the end of June.

Once this is complete we'll move onto a bigger project that will get 9 running on the same "core base" as 10. We promise never to take away from the soul of Channel 9. We are deeply aware that the sites have different audiences , but we do need to get on one codebase for the sites. Some things will only be present in C9 and others will get shared across the site. For example we want to update Sandbox and revamp the Wiki this year, most likely those features won't get pushed over to 10.

We'll use this thread to keep you up to date, share screenshots of the hompage redesign and include further updates on the C9 V3 project.

Let us know what you think. Niners made C9 what it is, we need your help to make it better.

sounds great... couple of things

1. this update will not effect the 2 yr running c9 DB that currently exists and user access to it (like we have now) ?

2. the Slashdot effect: say what you like about it - but it is plain and simple - consistant and uncluttered. Hopefully the coffeehouse will remain uncluttered by extra announcements, media clips, ajax frills etc

edit - although it would be great to let us choose to run c9 gadgets on the right -empty- side so long as we can make our own - and or use yours (like the current featured box)

This is one of the advantages of the 10 base, it has a web service API at its core.

What methods/data would you need? We hope that we can enable all sorts of C9 Mashups when the update is complete.

- inline polling ( if clicked on by thread creator)
- upload image from local drive (under 5 megs)
- PM's = Private Message - so i could let minh no if i updated a post on the c9park blog or whomever
- themes and the ability for us to make them

and last - an extra request to adam - is there anyway i could get the real C9guy file? Illustrator? ai ? corel? wmf? (vector) front / side views? i tried making it - but its not the same

edit - actually - publicly posted so we could all have it - just like downloading a Microsoft Windows logo eps - there should be a whole new section - c9guy psds and vectors!

We have 90% of this already in 10, which will of course come through to C9. We'll discuss showing a translated time for the person who posted the comment. It will take no time at all to code since the capability is already there, but we want to make sure we don't get too much information in your face. We'll discuss it.

Polls - We'll have this, but I'm not 100% sure what you mean by inline...explain...
Upload Image - I can't give an answer at this point, but we'll discuss it.
Private Messages - This is one I've been pushing on and off since we started doing 10 (and therefore would get into C9), but we just haven't had time yet and I can't promise anything for the second timeframe Jeff is talking about.
Themes - This would be super interesting to let people make C9 look like how they want it. I'm not sure about sharing those themes though. We'd have to discuss all the possible implications and again, time will probably be a factor. Good idea for down the road.
International Times - Definitely doable. Right now you'll see everything local to your selected time zone. We'll see if it makes sense to show a translated time for the person who did the posting. Easy as pie to code.

jamie, we'll be able to do this with a new feature (I'm working on it right now actually) that will show up in 10 in a couple weeks. It might not be 100% the way you want it, but I believe the ability you're looking for will be there in the second release Jeff talked about.

The best implementation of themes I've seen works like this:

Each user has a CSS link / URL in their personal profiles... When C9 renders the page it just places whatever the user has chosen in the rel="stylesheet" link... If nothing is selected it uses the default. That way the themes are ever-expandable.

So for example 9ers would be able to design their own themes and share them around... People just change the location in their profiles to the *.css file and get a new look and feel.

As I said I've seen this implemented top to bottom and it works great... Users have a lot of fun finding different themes that others have created.

As Jeff mentioned...we're not turning Channel 9 into 10. We know the target is quite different. 10 won't interest everyone, just like Channel 9 won't either.

So with that is there anything that you really don't want to see come over from 10? Again, we're only bringing over functionality from 10 but is there anything that scares you that we can put your mind to rest about?

re on10: the layout. Whats here is good. just need to utalise big red bar (go nuts with whatever you want) and the right column (give that to us in the form of interchangeable/buildable gadgets
* perhaps user polls, pm alerts, c9park watch;) could go on right
and you could move "Featured" to the 3 elements in the big red bar like: Current contest l Interview with Billg ver 3 l All about teched

agreed...jamie...the look of 10 is not coming here. You may see a few tweaks with the homepage redesign, but bringing over the 10 functionality will not change the look of 10.

all images/colurs/fonts in the css - but tables on master page called them
(its all one page - index.html - with a different css ref)
(works super fast in FF/ie7 - ie6 loads slow)

How about online/offline status thing for each user when looking through a topic? Also a spell checker when creating new topics and reply to topics.

I would also like to see a quick reply option at the bottom of a topic. There just a few things i would like to see . Cant wait for the update.

AMAZING!

by inline i mean i could start a thread called:

"Should msn images search have sort by size?" (like i made today) and add a poll to the thread

each user when replying to the thread would be presented with a vote box in the reply windows (well above it..whereever)

then we could really gage what the heck we're all going on about

edit - ideally we could sort user generated polls by most votes / yes wins / no wins

edit 2 - all polls "yes - no - maybe" only (for users) - so they are sortable later

Spell Checking - Done, just have to figure out the best way to show it in our UI.
Quick Reply - Have you tried out 10? We have a quick-reply type thing in there already. We're modifying it a bit in a couple weeks, but for the better. Let us know what you think. We sort of combined everything so quick reply is the only way to reply. Everyone wants to be quick, right?

sven is right - the date bug i forgot

if you edit the title of a thread from last year - to say.. "Whatever Thread *updated" - it changes the thread date to today - not a year ago - with an edit stamp

we should be able to add a new post to an existing thread - then update title of original thread - without trashing our creation time

Well i've said it before but here goes: the most annoying thing about 10 is that it needs horizontal scrolling on a tablet in portrait mode (768*1024). Since that's how I tend to visit C9, I'd find it very frustrating if the same happened here.

Ink without crashing IE with .Net 2 would be nice too. As would a text editor that sucked slightly less than the curent one.

I think spell check should be done the way the new Hotmail Beta does with its right click and select style and the red underline when a word is not spelt right. If you do, that would be awesome

I have just signed up to 10. Havent really seen much or know what its about to be honest but ill check it out

I think the ajax refreshing would be cool but not useful to the majority of users. I would like to see a feature that allowed users to filter out certain users and threads.

At the moment I don't like having to click on the New Reply icon from another person's post, the New Reply button should be at the top and bottom of the page.

I would also love a simple (plain text) quick reply box at the bottom of each thread to streamline the posting process.

I would like a spell checker as well and an indicator as to whether the author of a post or thread is online or not.

One thing I find very annoying is having only a few link pages listed at the bottom of the page.

I would like to see at least 10 individual pages together with links to the next ten.

For example 1 2 3 5 5 7 8 8 10 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69

I do hope that if you include alot of this, there's a "simple/classic" mode we call fall back to if performance becomes wacky.

I seriously don't want the add post page to take more than 5 seconds to render because of AJAX, spell-checking, etc..

Live.com is bugging me currently because of how long it takes just to load the main page. Please let that mess not affect our C9 experience.

Without that button you need always to scroll up to post a reply. I don't like that idea.

Btw: I'm not a fan of the quick reply thing. It just wasts in 99% of the cases my bandwidth.

My pet bugbear... I have asked for this before but here goes again

Make it work on IE for Pocket PC! This has ticked me off so many times. I browse the site, see somthing I want to reply to, start typing... then remember - it doesnt work. It just doesnt post. Considering this is meant to be a site evanglaisign MS technology thats just nto good enough - especially as mobility and tablets etc seem to get quite a lot of attention.

The worst thing was it did (kind of) work from Opera for mobile. Please make it work? Just a simple text-box editor to degrade to if the browser doesnt support the fancy editing box?

Oh and fromthe above it should be pretty clear spell checking will be welcome too

I've just had a look at 10 and I cant see any way to download the videos. They all seem to stream. I hope downloadable versions of videos stay a part of C9. I like to be able to watch them on the go.

I would like to see threaded discussions rather than the flat model you get at the moment It would cut down on the need to quote to make the replies understandable. Don't, however, lose the ability to see all the comments at once.

I would also go for slightly more business-like styling. The current colour scheme, icons, etc are a little retro-kitch.

I have very few requests
1. Use of Tags for each New Topic and later i can use a filter to watch for topics under certain Tags. (Very useful)
2. Quick repy window will help a lot.
3. Sidebar on the right to show Online/Offline users ability to send Private Messages, show most watched threads/most replied thread names.
4. New Icons or if possible use MSN Messenger icon set.
5. If possible, somehow an option to read multiple post..
6. Image upload - if i have something to show, i don't want to upload somewhere and paste the url here time consuming....

What a great thread

I can tell you one thing for sure, we will not be losing the Channel 9 color scheme. It just wouldn't be Channel 9 without the orange.

Other than that keep the suggestions coming, we'll be tracking each and every one to figure out what we can do. Oh, just so you know, Mobile support is very high on the priority list.

I'll only ask for one thing, that I've been desperate for since I joined C9 ...

Proper Safari support would allow me to drop FF completely on my machines - ironic that it is only C9 that keeps me using it and I am starting to dislike it immensely. I'm not asking for more in Safari that anything else - just the same level of functionality without paragraph hell would be nice.

Since 10 is validated XHTML, the only thing that's holding us back from Safari support is Atlas. The earlier builds we were using didn't yet have full Safari support. I believe newer builds (and of course RTM will) work with Safari. I'll go test it out right now. So the answer is that at some point we will support Safari.

For those concerned about all the opening and closing of comments that goes on over on 10...no need to worry. I'm working on forums for 10 right now and it will be different than the conversation window we have going on next to our videos. The experience will probably be a cross between forums here on C9 and the conversation box over on 10.

We all have personal blogs, but I was wondering if a dev team blog around the project would be interesting. We've been talking about releasing early screenshots, but we could also spend time talking about the process and I'm sure we have some blog-like code around here...

As I think about it some more, Channel 9 does have some idiosyncracies that push it more in the "blog" direction than most fora.

In particular, Channel 9 is a "Microsoft" site with special flags for Microsoft employees; all the administrators and moderators work for Microsoft; Microsoft products are highlighted, etc.

So I suppose this is almost (but not quite) a "communal blog" where the "blogger" is the Microsoft community and the commenters are everybody else.

I think the screencasts don't get enough attention.

As far as demonstrating code and tools, I usually prefer them to the live video recording. Both approaches have their place, but giving the screencasts a near-equal footing in the update seems warranted.

The great thing with the Coffeehouse is that everything goes, but often debates some debates can get lost in the noise and for me would have greater value having there own forum like Tech-off.

My suggestion is that we have a new forums on ...

New products ... where we can tell fellow 9'ers about the stuff we've found on our travels or the latest product releases from vendors and this is also where new stuff from Microsoft would appear (perhaps even with product managers starting the thread?)

News and Views ... there is a lot of political debate in the coffeehouse, some love it and that's the attraction of C9 because we debate stuff that isn't technology with our peers which if you think about is actually really great. But some people don't like it so much, so by clearly separating this out to another forum allows people to have a choice. The plus side for Microsoft is that this forum can have a different set of T&C's which helps with the legal and admin issues.

Community ... Each different locale has it's different Microsoft users groups, it strikes me that these groups never get a chance to advertise there events in a central location with high visibility, it also provides a way for all the different groups to get in touch with each other with the obvious benefit that brings.

So would I get rid of the coffeehouse? No not at all just provide an appriorate space for an appropriate debate. It won't weaken the coffeehouse as their is all the rest of the subjects on earth to discuss. Where else can Manip show his Gerbil pictures?

Maybe we could use pre-defined tags for this? RSS/Searching/Sorting/Grouping would all be easy then. The pre-defined tags so that we don't have tons of tags floating around...maybe Mods have the right to add new tags.. so say a new product comes out (Windows Viena (sp?) ), we could have tags for these added easily. Plus you could tag the videos (we do now), and then just see all the posts, media, sandbox items, blah blah for "Windows Presentation Foundation" or Vista, etc.

* Poorly Constructed Right-wing Political Views
* Religious zealotry from Larsenal
* Beer28 e-mail threats
* Major flamewar going on
* Godwin's law invoked

You know, things like that. I'll even volunteer to create icons for those attributes.

Minh, I have to say, I agree completely adn have been thinkign about this myself recently. In any update, those are things I'd like to see gone.

My problem is that stuff like this is a red rag to a bull for me, and I often charge in and react. I have been making a concious effort to not post on some of the religion / politics threads recently as the bile level seems to have gone through the roof, and nothing is gained from it. What troubles me most is that the most responded to threads are politics, religion, obvious trolls, or beer28 related. Some people try and start decent discussion threads and they just drop off the front page - gone forever.

Can we all make an effort niners? Things are changing here - a new look, a change of staff - how about a change of attitude?

Actually, this is a feature we've been thinking about. Sadly, it won't make it into our first round of forums on 10, but my guess is we'll have it for the next big release of C9. Problem solved

In other news, improperly configured CRTs cause headaches, most TFT displays cause headaches, properly configured and calibrated CRTs give a better image quality and less headaches than a TFT.

EDIT: That doesn't work in IE since it doesn't resize "px" unit fonts...and this website uses px unit fonts.

Bah, it's only a minor change to a stylesheet.

I've been lurking on channel 9 for several months and I just love it. But I want to echo what others have said in that I beg you to give me the ability to ignore certain users.

I am an unapologetic fan of Microsoft. No company is perfect, but Microsoft is a lot closer than many and it seems to me that they make a sincere effort to provide worthwhile products and services. And if they can do that and make huge profits at the same time, good for them!! Why is that a grounds for disdain? But apparently some people disagree with my perspective pretty adamently. And frankly, I don't wanna debate it, I wanna ignore 'em!

I guess that's just the draconian Microsoft totalitarian in me talking, eh?

So I beg the Microsoft powers, please fast track an ignore fellow niner feature! Good fences make good neighbors! In fact, could you create an optional selectable autofilter for users who have liquid bread references in their nickname?

But blocking single users will result in people (e.g. Eagle) blocking a group of people (e.g. UK members) and then making remarks about them while ignoring any replies.

The only people that will block out the trolls are the same people that ignore them today. Thus the thread will not disappear, and the people that don't take part in them will still see them as everyone all replies.

I would like to see a "Dig it" style system in which enough 9ers can lock a thread by voting to do so... So if enough of us hit the lock button the thread is locked.

There is a button by each user you can click to ignore them. All their posts will be collapsed but still visible. Want to see what they said? Unignore, read, then re-ignore.

It's all AJAXed up too so you don't leave the page on ignore/unignore.

We've been talking about the ignore issue and it possible, especially with threaded comments. We're looking into it right now, while working on manually setting a thread as read or unread, the idea being you may want to come back to a thread later so after viewing it you may want to switch it back to an unread status.

I love the idea of being able to vote to lock a thread.

Also, I know not everyone sees the value of being able to ignore a poster when you can just ignore with your brain, but life is short and I already burn a lot of time on nine. The team could implement some type of "digg" system for the forums. If enough niners vote for the thread it gets published to the front of the site and is give more dominent status in the forums index. Niners could unvote the thread which therefore removes it from the front page and somehow makes it less obvious when you visit the forum post index. There could be a drop down menu in the forum thread page which specifies how you want to list the threads "Most Recent", "By Votes" etc

There could also be a option to vote for a thread lock/unlock.

Two ideas:

1) One of the reasons to discuss ideas on C9 is that sometimes, Microsofties weigh in on the discussion. Because I already know there are IsMsEmployee bits, would how about an attribute/tag/icon identify a thread where M-softies have participated.

2) Since most of us can manage code to some degree, some sort of content querying language would be neat. That way, we could mash-up some of these features ourselves. With CINQL (Channel9 Integrated Query Language), we could create a nice list by filling in a text box such as:

SELECT: [ ForumPost.HasMSPost = true AND ForumPost.UserHasPosted("jamie") ]

(I understand suggestion 2 is probably unlikely, but sometimes one overcomplicated idea spawns a better simple one.)

I watch channel 9 videos for a long time and I believe that all of them are very cool stuff. It would be super cool if you could do a series on one project that you are developping from scratch, like 10, with episodes from the brainstorming meeting to the delivery. It would be a hit among computer geeks like me Maybe you could do that with the new channel 9 redesign I would surely throw away all the tv shows, no matter how many emmy awards they've got, to see an episode of a project development inside Microsoft (adam and jeff are way better than Josh Holloway and Matthew Fox )

It would be very interesting if you could make a section with little brainstorming proposals, maybe monthly, adressed to the community. Everyone's idea to be rated by the public and every user to gain in reputation according to the rating You never know what great ideas could be born this way

PS: Maybe it's a dumb request or I am an ignorant, but can someone make a list (and description, links) with free webservices that Microsoft(MSN,live.com,etc.) makes available (like MapPoint that you used in 10). It would be very usefull.
Can someone (a designer I guess) make a logo or something with the 9 guy, easy to print on a tshirt ?

A lot of moderated forums have a "Report this post" button which allows anyone to quickly notify the site mods that attention needs to be given to a specific thread/post without all the hassle of writing an email etc.

Maybe C9 could have something similar instead of (or in addition to) community moderators.

You read our minds. No promises yet, but we're going to try to make this happen. If anything, I'd say we should create a dev blog on Channel 9 where we, the devs, can talk about the changes we make.

We're looking at a few different ways to determine what's popular, but more than likely it will be weighted by both replies and views with replies weighted a bit heavier than views. They're both just measures of activity, but one involves more activity than the other.

Now picture this...say we have a way for you to say who your friends are on C9. Now imagine we add participation of people who you like to the weight for popularity. Cool? Now also imagine tacking on topics that you've marked off as your favorites adding to the weight so popular threads turns into "stuff you'll enjoy". That won't make it into the next version of C9, but it's something we're thinking about as we build some new infrastructure. I'm such a tease!

Yup, that's the idea (the checkbox thing...it will be defaulted on or off as specified by your profile).

You can watch 10 to see a baseline of features you'll see on the new Channel 9. That will release in the next couple weeks. Then once we get a prototype of the new Channel 9 (using the new code base) we'll put up a public beta for you to check out.

We're winding down the core platform work which will see the light on 10 first. We're calling that 10 Version 1.0. That will go live in the next week or so.

After that its full steam ahead for Channel 9 which will see us adding a number of features that are exclusive to Channel 9. We hope that we can get the beta live in September. With all dates some disclaimers apply.

Probably not. We had talked about this, but any work to the homepage would delay the movement to the new codebase.

We are doing minor bug fixes by once the 10 update is out then we'll be 100% focussed on the 9 update.

I think we've been pretty transparent that 10 would get an update first. The focus isn't necessarily "new stuff" for 10, but to get 10 up to parity infrastructure wise with Channel 9. Now that the infrastructure work is feature complete, Duncan is peeling off to work on Channel 9. The rest of the team will follow suit as soon as the 10 update it out the door. We found it easier / safer to prototype some of the ideas with the 10 website. In saying that as part of the launch of the 4th major revision of Channel 9 in two years we will go beyond our current forums functionality and try some new things here too. Once we get some prototypes of these ideas nailed we'll put some video up on them here.

and

- once you find a page in the search - it does not show the corresponding info that shows where it is ie: Page 1,2,3,4 - or where it exists in relation to its creation - it is just like a floating page that search found

Sorry, we have to be able to slack off in private. jk...actually, since you'll be able to update your avatar through the webservice, you could write an app to capture something from your own webcam every 15 minutes and post it as your avatar. I say this, because I already have a WinForms app that does this. The only thing I don't have in is a way for you to crop it to the right aspect ratio to fit in our site. I can probably hand over the code to you all if you want to work on it (after the new C9 is available).

Not right now, no. You can view the different web services we have on 10 currently (scowering through the html you'll find them), but we're still constantly changing them as we build our infrastructure. By the time the new Channel 9 is done, we'll have them pretty much finalized (feel free to make suggestions on things you want access to) and will hopefully have them documented. If not by the release then shortly after.

Avatars are good from a usability point of view. You can see who posted without having to read it. So if, for example, you are looking for a post by Charles you just scan the thread for his image and then read the post beside it.

It would be exceedingly handy, again from a usability point of view, to have a "mini-avatar" on post replies.

I agree that 9ers should be able to disable them if they wish, but am just defending them generally. There's nothing "13 year old girl" about C9s implementation.

Nudges, and winks are were that line is drawn, and C9 isn't even close to that yet.

Definitely! The problem is, it will have to be more different than just a stylesheet change. A lot of the content doesn't make sense to render out the same way. Like for videos, I would only want to see the title of the video as a link and the description and that's it. I click on the title and it comes up in media player as a stream. Strangely, I was testing this with 10 today.

As for the replies themselves, that's a whole other issue. We'd really have to render things completely different to make it readable and possibly allow you to reply, although honestly, I wouldn't reply to something from my phone unless it had voice capabilities.

Also, we probably wouldn't render the menu, except for on the homepage and just have a home link on all pages since it takes up so much spaces. And the Nine Guy would have to lose some weight. Although I've noticed IE in WM 5.0 seems to auto-shrink down images pretty well.

Luckily, we planned for this already. The way Duncan set up our VPP implementation in our new code base, we can easily check to see who's making the request and pass in a render type. So if you're a "smart" browser, we can send you the real deal down. If you're on a phone, we can send you a scaled down version. If you're a search engine indexing the site, we can send you down super small html, no styles, no no javascript, no nothing, just what you need for indexing, etc.

I want to see a Current tech news in Channgel 9. Like a tech news aggregation system using xml (RSS feed). Just to keep on top of things with current news. Plus ability to comment on each news item.

Also a spell checker + grammer checker and auto formatting abilitiy like those in Office as we type (intelliscence).

We're actually thinking on a scenario similar to this. Not an RSS reader though, nor will it be on the homepage of C9, but a way for us to highlight what's happening out on the blogs for you on very dev focussed topics.

Sadly, that may still be the case. I created a new rich text box for the new version of 10 (will be used for the new C9), but it's basically the same thing. You're actually typing into an iframe, that's why you get the funky menu. IE has a way to override the menu and put up your own, but one, I don't know how yet and two, I don't believe other browsers let you do that. I'll see what I can figure out, but I doubt it will get very high priority.

If you don't like clicking the buttons, why not just use ctrl+c, ctrl+v?

Because that's really awkward when you're using a tablet with no keyboard?

Can we at least have cut/paste buttons this time as not having them on the current editor can be a tad frustrating.

Good point. I can definitely get the buttons in there. Just out of curiosity, how much do you reply with your tablet? I'm not mocking you or anything. Tablets rock! I'm just curious as I haven't really done much replying with it.

Aside from when I'm at work (i.e. now) I use it all the time, so probably 90% of my responses are written on it. I do have a keyboard but I can rarely be bothered to attach it, especially as I prefer to use it in portrait mode when reading off the web.

I too can type faster than I write; much faster. But it isn't just that, also the software isn't perfect and can't understand my hand writing.

Not really, the handwriting recognition does a good enough job that it doesn't slow me down to much. And sometimes taking a little bit longer to think about what you're posting is a good thing.

Last time we talked about it, I believe it was still up in the air. We are definitely looking at adding Windows CardSpace support though.

This might be a little sad, but one (of many) reasons we didn't add it to 10 was because we couldn't give the user a great experience using Passport/Live ID. With CardSpace we can (heck it's almost the same look and feel of our pop up dialogs).

It might be fun to have a C9 design contest similar to what they had for Slashdot. I think it would be good for our community, and the barrier to entry for the contest is not too high.

Since there are a lot of new plans coming for the next version, the contest may only decide the general theme rather than every specific pixel.

Edit: Or as La Bomba hints, maybe just a contest to design the banner.

After seeing Jamie post two side-by-side screenshots of his desktop I wondered if the next C9 could use overflow:auto for each post? So when anything stretches outside the viewport only the post that contains the large picture/link will stretch out, thus keeping every other post on the screen.

Good idea?

Yah, but ok, um...I'll just come out and say it and see how many people freak out.

Why have the functionality to add images directly into a post at all? It messes up the site and IMHO only saves you one click.

If everybody on Channel 9 totally disagrees we'll put in the overflow:hidden div, but if an image is too big to fit, it's going to look like crap anyway.

Being able to use an image inline is an invaluable feature as it can 'liven' up a thread very well and make it a bit more fun to read/browse. Also, if you throw in 'overflow' it will only kick in when there's an image (or link) which is too large, most images posted aren't that big yet it does happen.

Yes.

We will do whatever it takes to make the experience of the site the same regardless of what all is posted. We're not sure what that means for images yet.

At this point it is UNTESTED, so I will say no. That said, it "should" work as the research I did before building it showed that Safari DOES support editMode AND execCommand and that's the only two things I'm using.

I honestly don't know if it will work at all as I haven't tested my browser recognition code yet. It "should", but that's not saying much. Let me know if it's printing out a textarea instead of an iframe (that means the server code isn't working right).

Got a link to where it says the designMode and execCommand aren't supported? I could swear I read they were. Also, we're only support 10.4 and above since Atlas only supports the version of Safari that comes with 10.4 and above (something like 2.0.x.x).

It's nice to hear about the channel9 updates.

I have one suggestion that some of the corporate office (like mine) not allowed to stream video or the download of media files. So it's hard to know about the contents of the videos for the people like us. It would be helpful if you include the transcript of the same in the future version of Channel9. Thank you.

I would love to see a better Searching and Sorting feature.

I would like to search for "Generics" +videos and see a listing of all videos on the subject of Generics. Display the video screenshot and caption just as you do on the Video homepage. From the listing I want to be able to sort that list chronologically (asc or desc) by clicking on the Posted On heading.

I don't care to see the threads with superfluous comments. I want to see the videos.

At the very least, you can add sorting on the Posted On heading today. That will help while we wait for the next major rev. I can't believe no one has asked for that.

Could you consider to provide more video formats ? For example 3GP to watch it on a mobile phone ? And since nowadays all goes widescreen a change to 16:9 format and maybe a HD version too ?
