Ballmer Defends Microsoft's Cash Problem

Ballmer, speaking to investors at the Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions conference, said Microsoft prefers to have the cash on hand in order to take risks on new technology and other things important to the company's operations.

I see nothing wrong with having a reserve. This is good news and sound business sense.

Well on second thought, until Microsoft releases Windows Vista and Expression, the cool stuff on the web will be Flash.

Microsoft chief urges bosses to get sacking

The whole minimsft thing made me think - wtf? Get your house in order first, before you lecture us, please.

Is it just me, or does a "hire the right people in the first place" strategy seem more sensible? A HR strategy that sets a target for a % of people to fire seems f'ed up right from the start, to me.

Of course! It costs Microsoft perhaps millions to hire the wrong people to half-arse the job for a year... But who are the right people and how do you find them? Clearly qualifications and face to face interviews aren't working or they wouldn't have SO many poor performing staff.

I'd say they view it more as an aggregate chemical process, like skimming fat off a vat of milk.
