I've read many a thread recently filled with troll posts. It's a difficult problem to crack so here is my suggestion.
We use the yellow and red card system similar to a game of soccer. Let me explain ...
The yellow card acts as a simple warning to other members that this member is put on probation so other members can make an informed choice whether they wish to read the thread or post the yellow carded member has created. Posts by a members on a yellow card
can also be filtered out if a member chooses.
The yellow card also tells the member that they have committed a transgression and are therefore on temporary probation. Of course they can have the right to appeal.
A yellow card is issued by a moderator to a member, the member has the yellow card icon next to his name on thread he/she starts, their posts, on the Niner's online bar and on their profile, where the moderator can write a simple reason why this member is
on a yellow card.
The yellow card can be removed by the admin at anytime but the yellow card can expire after an appropriate number of days, I would suggest 30.
A point to debate is the number of yellow cards a member can receive before they get a red card. I would suggest just the one.
So what do I suggest a red card does?
A red card removes the privilege of a member to post anything on C9. The red card status can also time-out after a number of days or be removed by a moderator, they also are unable to email fellow members. I would suggest that a red card is enforced for 60
days.
So do you like my idea? I believe it is simple to understand and gets the message across and that is that actions have consequences and standards of behavior are expected here on C9.
A yellow or red card will not be a badge of honor but a badge of warning and disgrace as the barer would have obviously failed on the very basic premise of C9, respecting other members.

I think this idea is a good one, however, maybe we could implement this with some sort of voting system as proposed before, members would vote as to who got a 'yellow card', but once a certain number say 'yes' they would receive one, 'red cards' should only be able to be given by moderators. 'Yellow cards' if issued by a vote should be reviewed by the moderators when they are next online.

I bet I get a yellow card first... You jerks

a simpler method of labeling people might be to tattoo a number on their forearm.

Godwin's law in 5 posts.
I think that's a record for this month.

So on a Flat Earth Thread the guy who says the world is round gets flagged!
I like the NBA rule of third man into a fight is ejected right away. -

Well, I suppose by my rules this would be a problem as it would mean that it would only take one person to disagree with many to cause this, but I do think that the use of the moderators to view the 'yellow cards' that are awarded to epopel via a vote from other people on Channel 9 would mean that this person would probably only have to wait a maximum of 12 hours before someone took them off a 'yellow card' as long as the circumstancesmeant this was the right thing to do, i.e. the person just disagreed with people, in a way that did not break the Channel 9 Code Of Conduct, or the Channel 9 Terms Of Use.

I think you guys should just give up the idea of any type of "voting" system being implemented. It would be abused so fast and hard that they would have to remove it before the end of the day.

I doubt very much that this would be the case. Many of us here are Linux users and advocates, I am one of them. I do not feel at all sectioned out or victimised. C9 is a classic case of a forum where your reap what you sow.

I feel that the system would be open to abuse if given to the public.

Reaping what you sow...the ground is rather rocky here.
So, go away.

This is an interesting idea. I agree that it should be a moderation feature. Adam and company, what do you think?

if there are tags for yellow and red - what about tags for green?
ie; if you post 5 great threads - then you are mad at something and post a "ms - you suck" thread - so you become yellow... instead of losing one of the greens you got posting something good?
You should think before you post. I don't want to have moderators managing cards... You would get a yellow card for being a jerk. Two yellows equals a red and you won't be able to post for x amount of time. Too many reds and you're outta here. Thoughts?

Great, that is nice and simple, but could be effective.

Am I a jerk if I called Bill Gates a moron?
Am I a jerk if I called BlatzCoder a moron?
Am I a jerk if I called BlatzCoder's mother a moron?
Am I a jerk if I called the entire Jewish / Palestinian people a bunch of morons?
Am I a jerk if I call a user a moron if they believed in the bible literally?
I don't like the "Ignore" feature that much, but I'd rather have that than the yellow card / red card system.

ya ignore is better
- Do not display threads by this user
- Do not display replies by this user
and/or lastly - which ever is the fastest to impliment
Much better having you guys work on new features like image upload / thread polling / themes / etc -
