Before I install it on my VPC, can I have some screenshot goodness?

Lots of bug fixes since beta 2 and other stuff too Smiley Watch the IE team blog http://blogs.msdn.com/ie where we will be posting more details.

Keep the feedback coming. See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx for the official feedback and bug reporting mechanisms.

    Thanks

Have installed it today - first impressions:  It's great!

Previous builds were still fairly slow at page rendering, but this new beta seems MUCH faster, the performance difference between IE7 and FireFox is now very hard to see.

If performance stays this good, or hopefully gets even better (any chance of more improvements to come?), then I'll seriously be considering switching back to IE as my default browser!

Initial page rendering still seems to be a little slower - is this down to the phishing filter?  Page rendering from previously opened pages (ie, from the cache), is now very fast, about as fast as FireFox i'd say.

Also, when I print, some pages are scaled down to (it seems) 25% of normal printing size - I've left feedback on connect.

Still, this new version is looking great and is certainly tempting this long time FireFox user to 'switch back'.

I'll be using IE7 as my default browser at home for the timebeing so I can look for more bugs or areas for improvement.

I know you guys think I'm crazy, but CTRL-A is the biggest update since the release of IE 7... I mean, security, search bar, anti-phlishing tool ... muh... They are NOTHING compared to CTRL-A!

PS - Does Windows fix the annoying auto-complete bug? The one where if the mouse is left within the auto-complete box area, even if the mouse is there since before the box was created,  that it will auto-select the item below it even without the mouse moving, making up/down unusable.

Although it does occur in IE *cough* Google.com *cough* it isn't an IE bug, because it also happens for the run box in XP and such.

The Performance is greatly improved, it is wonderful! Props to Microsoft. If we even see a little bit of improvement between now, and the final release, I think Microsoft can compete in the browser wars.

Woot this is awesome news just installing now i hope its much better than beta 2 from the screens above the tab dragging and dropping looks wicked. Big Smile

  • ManipManip

Yeah, I just read about tab drag/drop on the IE blog, very cool... Not something I've missed but something I can see myself using.

hmm just found an odd bug... If you double click half way between the address bar and an open tab sometimes it creates a new tab instead of resizing the window or doing nothing... Very odd bug...

I tried to produce the bug u found but no luck it doesnt happen with me Perplexed. I am very impressed with beta 3, nice performance gains and i like the ctrl - A thing u was on about Mainp i use that quite a lot too.  Keep up the good work IE team.

EDIT: i had 37 tabs open at once at it only just started too lag a little, not much though.

arrg just uninstalled beta 2, now when trying to install beta 3 it says i can't installfor some reason.  I have checked the site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925 and gone through part 1 of the step which said it was fine so tried again and it wouldn't work.  now onto step 2 which says to check %windir%\ie7beta2.log

(edit) it says on the website to:

In the Find what box, type DoRegistryUpdates failed, and then click Find Next. If you locate a "DoRegistryUpdates failed" error message, a problem exists that is preventing the update of the registry. The error message will resemble the following example:

however this doesn't occur ever, but similar things do occur.

obviously i'm not installing beta 2 anymore so i checked %windir%\ie7beta3.log

i would repost it but it's a bit long so i'll upload it to here:  http://jarede.googlepages.com/ie7beta3.log

    dave, bruce, help?

Take a look at the post on the team blog http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/06/29/650033.aspx
    Hopefully that might help.

Check the security permissions on HKCR\gopher, HKCR\gopher and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\gopher, HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\https.

Are you an administrator? And is IE 6 open?

  • RowanRowan Look, no errors.

The icons are slightly less bad, good work, however the "star" icons are really pixelated. Also, I don't know if it's just the new icons or if it's my customized classic theme, but the interface does appear slightly "cleaner" than before.

Some bugs are gone from my site, however it has introduced new problems too, and many bugs still remain un-attended.

Parts of the interface are still inconsistent, such as the arrow icons on the command bar; some of them contain "two hotspots", others only contain one clickable area.

The active tab is still difficult to distinguish from other tabs when using classic theme. The stop button still looks like a close button. You can move tabs (great), yet you can't move buttons???

When rolling over the favourites centre menu the "selected" colour is the same as the text colour, therefore I can't read a link if my mouse is hovering over it.

    Rowan,
Please leave any feedback and report bugs using the links at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx
This is the best way to ensure that the team sees the reports. Full details and repro steps really help so we cna be sure that we are looking at the same issue.

    Thanks
