How do you know they were?

I'm not saying that this is OK if it's true, but frankly I'm starting to have the opinion that Americans can do 1,000 good things right, and 1 horrible thing, the rest of the world will decide that everything we do is horrible, and we're horrible and the world
would be better without us.

Frankly, since our image seems to be "un-rehabilitatable" in the worlds eyes, why try?

Coffeehouse - The Saga of War Crimes Continues: Rape & Murder

Here are the convictions from Abu-Ghraib, not slaps on the wrists by my estimates (10 years in prison is no slap).

Specialist Charles Graner was found guilty on January 14, 2005 of all charges, including conspiracy to maltreat detainees, failing to protect detainees from abuse, cruelty, and maltreatment, as well as charges of assault, indecency, adultery, and obstruction
of justice. On January 15, 2005, he was sentenced to ten years in federal prison.

Staff Sgt. Ivan Frederick pled guilty on October 20, 2004 to conspiracy, dereliction of duty, maltreatment of detainees, assault and committing an indecent act in exchange for other charges being dropped. His abuses included making three prisoners (I need to
watch my language). He also punched one prisoner so hard in the chest that he needed resuscitation. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, forfeiture of pay, a dishonorable discharge and a reduction in rank to private.

Jeremy Sivits was sentenced on May 19, 2004 by a special court-martial (less severe than "general"; confinement sentence limited to one year) to the maximum one-year sentence, in addition to being discharged for bad conduct and demoted, upon his plea of guilty.

Specialist Armin Cruz of the 325th Military Intelligence Battalion was sentenced on September 11, 2004 to eight months confinement, reduction in rank to private and a bad conduct discharge in exchange for his testimony against other soldiers.[21]

Sabrina Harman was sentenced on May 17, 2005 to six months in prison and a bad conduct discharge after being convicted on six of the seven counts. She had faced a maximum sentence of 5 years.

Megan Ambuhl was convicted on October 30, 2004, of dereliction of duty and sentenced to reduction in rank to private and loss of a half-month’s pay.

Lynndie England was convicted on September 26, 2005, of one count of conspiracy, four counts of maltreating detainees and one count of committing an indecent act. She was acquitted on a second conspiracy count. England had faced a maximum sentence of ten years,
but was sentenced on September 27, 2005, to just 3 years. She received a dishonorable discharge.

Wait a minute. Your question was if someone told them to do it. My reply was simply who knows for sure. No one will argue that the pictures and information that resulted from what happened at Abu was pretty bad stuff. I was convinced long ago it took place.
I am not however convinced on whether or not it was sanctioned by someone in a command status or just perpetuated by idiots acting on their own.

There were some deaths due to what they did. These soldiers demonstrated acts of coward behavior. They should get life in prison or even death for betrayal of the Code of Honor and betrayal of US values.

The stories are comming one by one, and from the looks of it, I did not know that US soldiers can be this cowardly, murdering innocent civilians and raping young defenseless girls in front of their mom and dad.

More and more these gang that took over office, are making America look like Germany during the 1940s:(

The thing is that everyone is watching the US military through a microsope. I would bet that (an no I haven't researched this it is just a gut feeling) if you looked at any military conflict in the history of the world you would find this same stuff happening.
I am not saying it is not horrific, I am just saying that US service members are not the only ones to do it. The big difference is that the US government investigates and punishes them for it

No, it's still guilt by association. It doesn't matter if it's a group of 20 people each in 100 reported incidents. The manpower report for 2005 has over 1 million active, reserve and guardsmen in the US Army of which half are deployed. Is it true that of
the 1 million members of the US Army they are all are at their very core flawed due to mismanagement and lack of training from the Army, absolutely not. It is true however that of that 1 million there are several capable of some very cruel and disgusting
acts. Is it the Army's fault, perhaps, but it is still wrong to judge the entire group of servicemen based on that assumption.

EDIT: Oh, and the 1 to tens of thousands comment was a statistical comparison and not a statement that one acted alone.

I was not trying to justify it. If you read it again I even said "I am not saying it is not horrific, I am just saying that US service members are not the only ones to do it." I am not saying that because others do it it is alright, I am saying that
in war these kinds of things happen. It is probably due to the stress levels of people trying to kill you on a daily basis. Again doesn't make it right. I think your idea that the government must be behind it since these things are poping up like this is
flawed. we need to have a control to make these kind of assumptions, but there isn't much data on crimes commited in war time. This is probably because the level of reporting has risen due to technology like staelite phones.

Nevertheless I do understand why you feel that way. It is very true that the media tends to focus on the bad and rarely the good. And I also agree that the good does tends to be a bit staged at times. I get absolutely disgusted when I read about members
of my military acting out like Abu and this current rape/murder. It makes me sick to the very core because I loved my time in the service and have a very large amount of respect for them. That's why I tend to get defensive.
Not only does it hurt the country and the world but it's a hit to the vets who honorably fought and not are looked down upon becuase of the idiots.
I didn't mean to suggest that the US Government is behind the actions of the troops (except perhaps torture now and then). In general the US government is the one going to be taking most of the fire over this, they are the one left holding the ball after everyone
else has ran off.

Giving the troops inadequate training, and selecting the wrong people to be in the army are both things the government has to address, but that is a far stretch from directly ordering or authorizing the troops to commit such monstrous acts.

Yeah, i agree. I think a lot of it stems from the time inservice aspect to gaining rank, and how hard it is to demote someone that is incompetent. When I was in the Airforce and stationed at my first assignment, we had a Staff Sargent that was incompetent.
Our shop worked on heavy enquipment and this guy was cluelss. Not to mention he was always on the fatboy program and just looked like crap. But, because he was in for 12 years or something like that he was a staff sargent, which ment he could tell us all
what to do. (except for the tech sargent that ran the shop). if we were in a battel situation, I gurantee he would have gotten us killed. I am sure the Army has problems like this which lead to people given bad (or no commands) that can lead to bad things
happening.
Not neccessarily. Most of these soldiers are 19-25, and try as you might, I guarantee that you could never put together a group of perfectly behaved 19-25 year olds. This is not an excuse, but I don't think that the rank and file soldier is taught to treat
civilians with disrespect.

Problem is, peer pressure (a bunch of guys with guns, hooah) and the sheer statistical probability of psychotic behavior in this age group leads to these events. We may like to think of them as perfect (or imperfect), but it's probably somewhere in between.
What makes you think that I HOPE that things trun out like you say? To HOPE is to imply I have some kind of beef with US Armed Forces and wish them failure! But this is not true. The evidence is strong, and the military does not prosecute anyone without strong
evidence. Now the Iraqi people gave interviews on tv, about their testimony as to what happened, and they are not 1 or 2 they are 13 + people who lived in the area and witnessed what happened. Just like what happened in Haditha, the surviver said it all.

So a war crime HAS been committed, and it is Highly probable that the US Forces involved are guilty of this crime. The Trials are only a way to formalize things. But nonetheless, a crime has been comitted and a girl died in Cold Blood at the hands and guns

So a war crime HAS been committed, and it is Highly probable that the US Forces involved are guilty of this crime. The Trials are only a way to formalize things. But nonetheless, a crime has been comitted and a girl died in Cold Blood at the hands and guns
of those barbaric savages.
A better way to put that would be.

The point I believe is trying to be made, if I may, is that your article and responses are taking a tone of "it must be true because it hasn't been proved false."

If it is in fact servicemen who comitted this crime I hope they fry their asses. It is however speculation at this point to assume they are in fact guilty and a bit reckless to lead the thread in that direction as you did with the parent post. That however
is just my opinion.
Shark, regarless of your suspicions, beliefs, whatever, you are wrong to assume guilt until there is a full investigation. At that point, you can invent all the conspiracy theories that you wish.

We (Amereicans, and the UK, I think) we assume innocence until guilt is proven. Sometimes, the bad guys slip through the cracks (OJ, for example), but that is the price we pay to avoid putting innocent people in jail.
It is also a good reason why Gitmo is an abuse of civil rights. Regardless of their standing (combatants, soldiers, terrorists, whatever), these people need to be charged with something. Otherwise, they are simply being abused under false pretenses.

Ok. So some US soldiers are charged with a crime and if found guilty will go to jail possibly even be executed. Meanwhile Iraqi insurgent terrorists are going around killing innocent people. Their goal is to kill as many innocent people as possible. US soldiers
want to kill as few innocent civilians as possible to the point where they put themselves in personal danger to avoid killing innocent people.

It's clear to any reasonable, rational individual who the bad guys really are.

Aha, so your logic is that if someone makes a claim, that claim is false because there is a problem with the claimant? that is a fallacious argument (ad homenim). He was speaking form what he experianced. What incentives does he have to lie? More importantly,
even if there is a problem with the claimant, others have said essentially the same thing. So the claims are supported by stories of other soldiers. Which makes it highly probable that it is true. Especially in the aftermath of Abu-Ghraib and Haditha and others.

That argument is not fallacious, it is how the US court sstem has word for over 200 years, at it makes common sense. If someone says something, and they turn out to be a serial liar, then the likely hood they are lying about this is high. If this guy
was not in Iraq, then he has no idea what is gong on there. Therefore without some other evidence there is nothing showing that the US is directly targeting civillians. Now, this doesn't mean that a few reckless soldiers haven't done things that are illegal,
but that is a far cry from the thought the the military is commanded to directly target civillians or harm prisoners.
Wow. F-ing wow. You realize that any credibility you might have once had has completely evaporated right?

No one in their right mind would defend the kind of crimes that have been committed by some involved in the conflict... the problem is that some folks like you assume that because a small group of people choose to be bad it must be a symptom of policies
and that those making the end decisions must be causing these very things to happen.

I’m sorry to say that that is not the case and it is a shame you cannot see that. In any large group of people you will have people who do these kinds of things whether they are in the Army, Marines, working at a church, day care center or a 9-5 coder.

Unless you want to completely lobotomize our troops (and also remove their effectiveness as a fighting force) people like this will sadly fall through the cracks.

Don’t get me wrong, what these troops have been accused of is disgraceful and undefendable (if true)... why is it though that you get so hot under the collar every time there is an allegation of our troops acting poorly (which is quite rare considering the
numbers over there) and don’t seem to bat an eye when the those we are fighting commit far worse atrocities (as is part of their official doctrine) against not only our troops, but also the civilians.

Don’t you find this at least a bit hypocritical?

Or are you so full of hate of America, it's leadership or just a person or two there that only they can do wrong and nothing else can compare?

You are using gut feelings here, To say that the enemy has done something like this premeditated murder & rape. I have yet to see a report of this. Even if they did that, that is no justification of US Army to be relax or even defend such actions or commence
doing such actions. If we do this we are no different than the Enemy we are fighting.

America today is not the same as America 10 or 20 years ago. Something happened to this country and I want the old America, the one that stood for honor and curage, not the one where top Army people allow Abu-Ghraib and Haditha, and War crimes to happen. Not
the one that is relax about the rules that 5 or 10 US army soldiers, who are supposed to be ambassadors for US values and ideas, would premeditatively plan to rape a young girl and burn her body in the most inhumane way along with her family. This is the ultimate
act of selfishness, and is a cowardly act.

If the training of these soldiers was so hard , so demanding, and these soldiers are shown that they will pay dearly for any crimes that will tarnish US image or US values, then we would not see a shower of incidents of atrocities over there.

Now how would you look at people in the eye and say my country men are honorable ones?

I am not miserable, I am sad, because there are such morally degraded individuals in this world, like you who live among us in this day and age.

I thought by the end of WWII, the ideas of hate and intolerance were demolished. But I come to realize that maybe some have fled the war and infelterated our society, and now took positions of power and are tarnishing US image to the world.

I dont think US stands for liberty or freedom or respect of human values and dignity anymore. More and more we are looking like a 1984 Orwell's novel, mixed with a toutch from Germany during the 1940s. This makes me sad, but not miserable.

Why? Because I still beleive there is hope.

About rationality, you are the lest of us to speak of rationality, because you never knew what it really means.

My suggestion is that if you feel the need to use inappropriate language, take a brake and then come back and post. It will help you not flame others, I use it myself:P

Now, back to the article Shark posted, I can put too much stock in it because it says things like "US military official" and "The official, speaking on condition of anonymity". If they don't explain who the source is how can be be expected to believe
it. It could have been some low level person that overheard someone who overheard someone who overheard someone. I am not saying it is not true, I am just saying it might not be. Again, it doesn't mean that the government wanted them to do it, just that
some bad apples did some bad stuff.

They are in the process to being charged. I have no problem , in this day and age where after what we saw what the army is doing and is capable of, of assuming them guilty until proven otherwise.

Honestly, if I were female, I would consider it an honor to be compared to Ann Coulter. She's brilliant.

And, honestly, liberals aren't winning elections and I do personally believe it is because of the false pretences under which they run and their kook Kos base. However, I appreciate your comments.
Wow. F-ing wow. You realize that any credibility you might have once had has completely evaporated right?

Given that the US armed forces have something like, what? 130k + servicemen in Iraq its impossible to avoid having a couple of rotten apples in the basket, im confident that US military justice system will punish them for this as they have done previously
with others.

14 convicted so far out of 130000, thats 0,0107 % or one in ~9346 persons on a yearly basis, im imaging that the conviction rate for murder and rape per capita in the continental USA each year are considerably higher than that.
Ha!, I beleive this is systematic thing. Because the frequency of it happening. There need to be a system of PREVENTION to deter such soldiers from doing this. Like allowing cameras into each army unit , and each unit would have to hand in their mission video
for review. Just like in the Air Force.

Uhu?, its doesnt work quite that way for the ground troops, im a reserv officer myself (not in the US) who should hold the camera for once? should that be only one camera or should all in the patrol have one?

Or maybe a "embedded" reporter? lets see, im guessing that the army and marines combined have something like 10-15 brigade teams in Iraq, lets say that each of them sends out about 100 combat patrols per day in various places in Iraq, that would require
at least 1000 -1500 cameramen plus support for them every day out in the field documenting everything that the patrol is doing, it simply isnt
feasible.

well you can ship helments with cameras in them. That are connected wirelessly to a server farm, and for each day top commanders or special team woul review each mission's video feed to see if they broke any morality rules or they deviated from the Military

Thats silly, just imaging the manpower and resources for watching all these videos, and for what? besides, w-less cameras are not very reliable, contrary to what you may have seen in h-wood movies.
If you have trained and equipped soldiers you will just have to trust that they will do their jobs honourable

Apparently they did not, after Abu-Ghraib and Haditha.

Trust is no longer working.

Well you can program patter recognition software that sift through the megabites of live feed, to pin-point possible wrong doing. plus randomal checking of feeds.
