Okay, here's my situation:
I want to be able to view my files that are on my desktop computer remotely on my laptop trough an explorer window. For example, I want to be able to select more than one file that is on my desktop computer, and drag it to a folder that is on my laptop. I
know FTP will do the trick, but what's a good, free FTP server?
Also, I have a DynDNS account, and my computer is behind a router.
edit:
and I'm running XP home. ![]()

Tried VNC? Some versions support file transfer.

1- you can do port forwarding within your router
2- Cjb.net has a free DynDns service
3- if you do not need an IE window there are about 3 services that allow you to access your computers by installing software in one or both - Google Desktop is one of them

You probably want to setup a VPN. Hamachi is a good free one that works well even through NAT. It is pretty easy to setup and use as well. Once connected, it'll be like your laptop and desktop are on your home LAN - so you use the regular windows file and printer sharing.

Now that is better than what I was looking for. Thanks. I have it installed on both my computers, and I have tested it. Hmmm... but hopefully it will work even when both my computers aren't actually on the same network.
But it seems to be fine.
And I'm leaving for a week in a couple of hours, so I can only hope!
Thanks, cravikiran!

XP Home has simple file sharing support. I believe the share is called Shared Documents or something. But since you imply this will be over the internet, that idea is worthless if that is the case. I would consider something other than FTP since FTP is terribly insecure.
That's standard Windows File Sharing, never expose it to the Internet.
There is a folder called "Shared Documents" that is available to all users on the system, don't confuse it with Windows File Sharing.

Use FolderShare (www.foldershare.com) MS software (formerly ByteTaxi)

Actually the Shared Documents folder is also the only folder that's shared by default when you set up file sharing. -
