Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

IE7 is a great update to old 6.x, but screen drawing is very slow.

I have installed beta3 in three different machines, my testing computer (3.4ghz/2Gb Intel), a second one (3.4/2Gb) and my laptop (2.2G/1G) and page vertical scrolling is much slower than 6.0 on all of them. Even text-only webpages scroll very slowly when using
mouse wheel.

I thought that something might be wrong with installation so I've installed XP from scratch, updated with all hotfixes and IE7b3. Same results...

Finally I've tried with extoff, although I don't have any third party extensions installed, and with Cleartype disabled but no help. BTW I had exactly the same experience with all IE7 betas and every page I visited, including c9.

Some of my colleagues who tried IE7 betas, had the same slowness issues.

Any idea?

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

Actually in general I find the scrolling smoother than IE6. Opera still rules in this department, IE6/7 will be a littly chunky on some pages with lots of flash animations for example. Opera is silky smooth on every PC I've tested it on, but IE7 is probably
the second closest. Scrolling speed is definitely not a grip with IE7 for me - it was somewhat in earlier builds, but B3 runs very nicely.

What I did find annoying was that on my GF's machine (XP2500, 512 megs, 6600 GT 128 meg), is that switching between tabs wasn't instant - there was a "redraw" of the screen that was quite noticeable. Firefox/Opera on her system is instant.

On my system (2 gig A64 3200, 256meg 7600GT) it's also instant, there's no flickering or "repainting" visible when switching tabs. It's not ram, it can't be processor speed because the difference between out processors isn't as great as the difference in tab
switching. Shouldn't be video cards either as the 2D speed between us is basically indentical, the 7600GT is only faster than the 6600GT in 3D operations.

Anyone else get this? Her system is very clean and not running a ton of extra crap.

Well, of course - any browser could do it that amount of time, "speed" really isn't the issue here, it's smoothness. IE will be choppy on that page, Opera scrolls as smoothly as a videogame.

It's not a huge issue of course, heck it's not really an "issue" per-se - just that Opera is sublime in this aspect and it would be nice for IE7 to match it.

Edit: Actually, I tried it again, and the problem with the choppiness (at least on
www.msnbc.com and others, depends on the content) is that it makes it difficult to use free-scroll to accurately go to a point on the page quicky. With IE7, you can start scrolling quite smoothly as long as you start out
slow, but as you ramp up the speed it quickly *lurches* - there's not enough intermediate steps between speeds, and the choppiness at the higher speeds makes it even more difficult.

That's exactly what I meant. I can see the same difference when comparing IE6 and IE7 with many different webpages, even text-only.
IE7 rendering is indubitable fast but scrolling is choppy and much slower than IE6 (or other browser). It is very noticable with long text only formated pages, like IEblog long posts, W3C documentation pages, google groups etc.
All testing done with fast video cards (ATI X800xt, X1800xt) and resolution 1600x1200x32bit (maximized IE6/7 window).

I really hope so Peter, IE used to be very fast and IMHO, browsing performance is much more preferable than a nice looking UI or a bunch of new features.

I have tried Firefox and IE7 on a 400Mhz 256MB RAM. Firefox is much better than IE, less scrolling problem, fast switching between Tabs, even Tabs open fast in Firefox.
What I did find annoying was that on my GF's machine (XP2500, 512 megs, 6600 GT 128 meg), is that switching between tabs wasn't instant - there was a "redraw" of the screen that was quite noticeable. Firefox/Opera on her system is instant.
Actually with futher usage, I also find scrolling speed on her machine is atrocious depending upon the site. On some sites it's perfectly fine - on others, like cnn.com, it's absolutely dreadful.

On my system, cnn.com is very smooth. On hers- chop city. The processor difference doesn't come close to explaining the dramatic difference - is this an AGP vs. PCI-E issue?

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

I have this exact problem and its killing me because I really think beta 3 is a great browser.

I know my laptop is old, Inspiron 5000 PIII 600, 512MB, etc but IE 6.0 simply does not have this problem. Neither do Firefox 1.5 or Opera 9.

I've have this problem with all of the betas and have tried everything to fix it to no avail. There just has to be something about this new engine that is causing this chopiness.

A perfect example is deviantart.com. At the top with the thumbnails its pretty choppy. Towards the bottom I only see text on the right and its back to normal scrolling.

Edit - Its not just about photo slowing a page down. This page scrolls perfectly fine.
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/g6_samples.html Clicking on 6MP photo and scrollng it works perfectly. It just seems to come down to certain page elements causing chopiness.

Any thoughts?

Seems that isn't fixed in IE7 final. It is the widget styling that cause this slow rendering when scrolling. Not only slows down scrolling speed but also uses a lot of CPU resources, especially when pages contain many buttons, input boxes etc.

Try to disable visual styles (Internet Options - Advanced - Enable visual styles on buttons and controls in webpages). I did that and IE7 scrolling performance is equal to IE6.

I wonder what IE7 developers have changed to styling code and made it so slow. Maybe optimized it for Vista?

The only thing that comes to mind is ClearType. I believe the setting is Inetcpl.cpl (Internet Control Panel) -> Advanced -> Multimedia -> Always use ClearType for HTML rendering.
See if you get a repro after disabling that.

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

Tried that and it's no different. In any case, changing something to do with HTML will not improve operation of the video for other programs.

I installed Firefox2 in my other computer and it did not slow down anything. In fact IE7 slowed down the first computer I mentioned to the point that my second (slower CPU) looks fast in comparison.

My conclusion.. If Microsoft can't improve this situation, it's bye-bye for IE7 in my home. I'm even now getting somewhat worried about what problems Vista is going to cause.

I guess the winners here will be Intel and AMD since we'll need faster computers just to keep up with bloatware OS.

I too have found this site because I was Googling for 'IE7 scroll speed'. I too have gone through the trouble of joining just to add another unbiased report of the same problem.

I too have an issue with IE7 scroll speed. It is maddening. It makes browsing a very unpleasant experience. I thought the problem would be fixed in the release version of IE7 but I am very dissapointed to report that it has not been.

I currently manage ~500 Win XP machines via WSUS. There is no way I am pushing this problem out to my users when it is released to SUS next week

Presently I am going to obtain the latest version of the Intellipoint mouse driver, as I use a Microsoft mouse. Many people, particularly Logitech users, have reported that a mouse driver update will fix this problem.

If the mouse driver doesn't help, I am uninstalling IE7 and going back to IE6, where I know scroll speed is not a problem.

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

In the Vista RC2 build 7.0.5744.16384 there are following issues that might be fixed in Vista RTM I haven't checked yet:

1. If page has been 99% rendered but some last item is taking a lot of time, eg you can view the page but some page visit counter takes long time to update, scrolling in this state is very choppy with mouse wheel and does not even work every wheel click.

2. medium sized but long animated gifs, ones in the megabyte range eg 100x200 pixels and 2 MB size cause very high cpu usage, EVEN when IE is not the active app. If I have IE minimized and am playing a game I can easily notice if the page last open in IE has
a animated gif running. This is on 1.5 ghz P-M single core and having IE take ton of cpu (50-80%) to render a single gif is ridiculous when it isn't even visible.

I have Adobe PDF Reader, MS media player, Shockwave/Flash addons installed but were not active during the above scenarios.

I have the same problem on that page, though I dont think it's a scrollling problem directly, for me the CPU usage is 50% (dual core so one processor maxed) while on on that page, hit back and cpu drops to near zero. I have several pages I know of that have
the same problem, one even pushes the CPU usage to 95%. If I switch tabs off the page the CPU drops to zero. This is a clean XP-MCE machine with IE7 (no betas ever installed).

I don't see the same problem on our 2003 servers though.

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

After updating to the latest MS mouse drivers - I have to report that the IE7 Scrolling problem still exists.

For the first time I also watched my CPU load for iexplore.exe - and it goes to 100% when I scroll the page I will refrence below.

Regardless of plugins - this problem is NOT exhibited on IE6. So no one should have to go down the 'what plug in do you have' road to solve this mangy little bug. There are more reports of this problem being independently reported every day - found via Google.

I will add one interesting observation however: The problem IS NOT EXHIBITED if I hold my mouse over a BLANK area of the page!?!

Here is an example:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/index.php

That page has horrid scrolling in IE7 with the mouse wheel. HOWEVER - if you hold your mouse cursor to the far left and get to a white space on the page - the problem GOES AWAY. You can scroll the same page smoothly if your mouse is not over the main table
or any text??? Oh well - that's the way it is for me with the latest Intellimouse driver - your mileage may vary.

It is a farce; I have no choice but to go back to IE6 for a couple of months until this gets sorted out. Now I'll be adding a few extra months of testing to the IE7 pilot group for good measure too, before rolling it out with WSUS.

In this case, the '7' in IE7 is a good estimate of the year tick this century that it will see the light of day in my enterprise.

On the other hand... Animations and Flash in IE7 will see my CPU max out within a second or so... and the CPU fan on my PC roars like a Jumbo approaching V2... I half expect the box to rotate and take off. Everyone in the office knows when I'm looking as "moving"

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

This is a plain and simple comparison of browsers: Many that do not have the problem, and one that DOES, on MANY TYPES of reference hardware. The common denominator is IE7.

It doesn't matter what video card, CPU, mouse, etc you have. Those items may affect the DEGREE to which you are afflicted by this IE7 mouse scrolling problem. But let's be clear: many people with various reference systems are reporting this problem.
It *IS* an IE7 problem.

Here is another fine example, one I am sure you are all familiar with:

http://slashdot.org/

Again, if you scroll over the white space to the side - it goes much faster.

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

Scrolling issue is very noticeable when using IE maximized with a hires screen. Scrolling a webpage on 1600x1200 requires much more resources than same page on a 1280x1024 screen.
Although I use fast systems equipped with 2-4GB RAM and very fast video cards, I still have this problem with most webpages, when scrolling them with mouse wheel.

The only fix I've found so far, is to uncheck "Enable visual styles on buttons and controls..." option in IE7 advanced settings thus I assume that something is going wrong with web control theming code.

I wonder why so far nobody from MS IE team has commented on this issue!

While MB's responses consisting of childish insults can hardly be excused, this type of response isn't exactly indicative of professional behavoir either.

A simple "Yes, we're aware of it" would have sufficed, which would have resulted in a "Good to hear, thanks!" response from myself. We clearly want IE7 to be better so it can be our main browser, politely asking about a speed problem (which is very significant
to some people, especially as no other browser has this) should not result in such a snarky tone.

Hate to break it to you, but while informal, this isn't Usenet. Gawd knows if I responded in that style when I was represeting my organization, I would have gotten a stern boot up the (I need to watch my language).

You're missing one of the points of Channel9.

Peter isn't representing Microsoft on Channel9, he's representing himself and while he happens to be a Microsoft employee (same as me) he's not on company time, he's not paid to do this, and his points and comments are his own. As long as he doesn't voilate
his employment agreement by discussing "Microsoft Confidential" information, he can say what he wants.

If you want us to represent Microsoft, then chances are you get dead silence on anything controversial because we're not the people paid to talk about anything controversial.

If you want us to represent Microsoft, then when it comes to bug reports or other problems, we'll send you to
http:///support.microsoft.com and call it handled. Peter and I are both paid to develop software, not support it, and certainly not support it for free.

But most people here seem to want actual interaction from Microsoft employees visiting Channel9. And that means you don't get to pull out this "you're an employee, and I'm a customer" crap like you're yelling at the airline counter clerk.

Nitz, I don't think you don't get to expect professionalism just because we're Microsoft employees. Common courtesy, perhaps, but not professionalism.
Thank you for the apologies, appreciated. When you only quote my post though, it does tend to indicate you're directing at least the bulk of your comments in response to it alone, hence my confusion.

I agree that MB's response was extremely juvenile, and commented as such.

Of course not - no one is defending MB's rantings here, any MS employee would have full recourse to smack him down after those insults. I just felt the initial respone to my query (which I felt was innocent enough) didn't warrant the annoyed tone.

BTW, I just checked and IE7's scroll speed is still slow. What the hell are you guys doing over there?!?

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

It's almost March 2007, and this laggy/slow wheel scrolling problem hasn't been solved yet.

As a poster mentioned above, the slow scrolling problem disappears when you move the mouse pointer to a blank area (or white space) on the page you are scrolling in.

I have found that this scrolling issue happens when viewing ANY forum thread, where there are many posts (about 100 or so) shown at once. It seems that the CPU gets bogged down by IE7 if the mouse pointer is in the middle of the page. If you move the mouse
pointer off to the side, and scroll while pointing to a blank area, the scrolling is smooth, and lag-free.

The "enable visual styles" solution solves a different problem - it only helps fix those pages that are using the visual styles buttons and such.

I really hope this problem is fixed soon. This is the only thing keeping me from switiching over from FireFox.

Unfortunately there is no solution to this issue yet. I'm pretty sure that MS will do nothing before IE8. Even that I doubt it will be any faster.

I disabled java script, it had no effect but moving the mouse cursor over the lines that separate columns and rows in makes CPU go wild, with a lot of the following in stack trace:

mshtml.dll!DllGetClassObject+0x.......

To me that doesn't tell enough to pinpoint the issue but there might be something about the stylesheet or other visual options in that page that make it heavy to process.

stealth916 wrote: After updating to the latest MS mouse drivers - I have to report that the IE7 Scrolling problem still exists.

Good insight. Anybody know what that means?

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

Is it inefficiency of the programming? Could it have something to do with the fact that IE7 does "true zooming" (zooms text AND graphics, rather than text ONLY), and therefore "sees" web pages differently than the typical browser? This might require
more processing power, and the CPU has to work hard to redraw the pointer icon when you wheel scroll over graphics and borders and whatnot... I dunno.. Just a stab...

Or..... is it just a glitch that Microsoft overlooked?

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

On a reasonably fast computer, 1Mb mem, v. fast cable connection.

In IE7 most of the web sites work fine, but SOME are very slow in displaying and horribly slow and jerky scrolling makes them unusable.

Cases:

1. Due to "fill" in the background of the page. When I save the page locally on my computer it is still slow, but when I edit (with Word) and remove fill, the jerky problem goes away. The fill on the slow pages is usually done with
tightly spaced horizontal lines. I've noticed this problematic "fill" on many jerky-scroll web sites.
For an example see: http://www.warsawvoice.pl/

2. CNBC.com new site. It has just been fixed!!! Until two days ago it was atrociously slow with terribly jerky scrolling ( and I've complained to CNBC a few times).
When I just went to check, it scrolls fine now! I could not edit that page locally, but the new page shows a black background displaying first and then the content. I guess that the problem could have been also related to "fill" in the background.

With any lack Microsoft will fix this problem in the next few years...
The IE team will put a fix for this issue out probably in the SP1 or IE8 timeframe.

Stop bumping this thread, as it will not expedite any kind of resolution this way.
I wouldn't say that IE team did great job. It's the Firefox developers who did much worst.
In any case, IE7 is still the best in terms of stability although it lacks many features found in both FF and Opera.
PS (@PaoloM): I have a high degree of respect for all MS developers. However I still wonder how all these talented people, didn't notice IE7 slowness before finalizing the code ...

"The IE team will put a fix for this issue out probably in the SP1 or IE8 timeframe."

I sure as hell hope it this slow scrolling does get fixed, I'm a web dev and wanting to use transparent png files on websites can add a nice touch, but the scroll speed in IE7 just kills that idea off most the time, depending on how much area the png covers, FF
seems to handle transparent png's a little better, but FF sucks without a ton of strap on extensions.

Also you think them IE team guys could also include a better looking image icon for the MMB scroll whenever this next IE release comes out...(hmm I wonder if FF3 will be out before it?) ..The current one looks rubbish, what with its jaggy pixel circle..
I mean take a look at the transparent one used Firefox, at least do something like that, its a cosmetic thing, but as maxthon still uses this engine I still see it.. did I say it looks ugly?

Seems that isn't fixed in IE7 final. It is the widget styling that cause this slow rendering when scrolling. Not only slows down scrolling speed but also uses a lot of CPU resources, especially when pages contain many buttons, input boxes etc.

Try to disable visual styles (Internet Options - Advanced - Enable visual styles on buttons and controls in webpages). I did that and IE7 scrolling performance is equal to IE6.

I wonder what IE7 developers have changed to styling code and made it so slow. Maybe optimized it for Vista?

Disabling Visual Styles helps a bit, but I really can't understand why IE 7 has to eat all CPU-cycles just to scroll when IE 6 didn't?

I have never tried making a web-browser, but I can't help wondering how this is done? Isn't possible to just render more than the visible part that is in the window right now in a "superbitmap" and when the user scroll just show another part of that superbitmap?
Of course that wouldn't work on very long and/or wide web-pages, but it could be done bit by bit while the user is scrolling.

The way it works now I assume the rendering is done "on-the-fly" while the user is scrolling? Which would lead to a lot of work being done over and over again every time the webpage is moved a bit.

Playing with figures, a screen resolution of 1024x768x3 (24-bit color) would take 2,25 Mb of memory (uncompressed bitmap, that is). If one would make a superbitmap five times that, it's a little more than 11 Mb. That nothing to what IE 7 already uses! And
I think most people (having 1GB or more in all new machines) would at least appreciate the possibility to choose more memory consumption for less CPU consumption!

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

Hi guys,

I'm quite shocked by the attitude of some. "Don't bump the thread" or "Wait until Microsoft releases a patch". Why bother using a forum if that's all of the help you're going to be? Moreover, why be a web developer if you're going to wait for everything to
be fixed for you?

Anyway, enough of that little rant...

I came across this thread earlier, having stumbled across the same IE7 bug. A little reading around and experimenting and I've come up with a possible solution. It won't work all of the time, but it may help some people around the bug (even prior to MS's imminent
fix ) -

The problem came up on a site I didn't write, so I had to dig around. I found that the offending css was a single line calling a background image, and that said image was 1 by 2 pixels. Opened it in Photoshop and found it was empty - ok, so its a single transparency
level png.

I didn't experience the 100% CPU usage described above, but I wondered why a single image would make so much of a difference to the redraw speed. My answer was confirmed when I enlarged the image.

The cause of the slow redraws appears to be the number of times the bg image tiles, so if possible, make your bg images larger. I went up to 1000*1000px and on a page with about 10 folds, my redraws are now instantaneous.

Hope this helps someone, and sorry if I've stepped on any toes

Coffeehouse - IE7 slow scrolling

I was experiencing the same problem with IE7 and the very slow scrolling issue on XP Home. Example...when you tried to use the scroll wheel on the mouse, it would scroll 1 pixel at a time for 3 to 4 lines then jump an entire page. Same thing happened with
the scroll bar on the right side of the screen.

I went to Microsoft's website, and found a patch that was made for SP2 and SP3 to update the browser and it did fix it. However, next time my Live Update came on, it overwrote that fix, because the update was newer than the patch.

So after getting a little frustrtaed, I Googled the issue, and came up with the issue. It was the new SP3 Phishing Filter issue. Microsoft has an update that eliminates the problem and doesn't make the live update want to overwrite.

Here is the brief overview of the patch from Microsoft:

Overview

This update resolves a performance issue with the Phishing Filter. When visiting certain web pages, the Phishing Filter may increase CPU usage while evaluating the page contents and the system may become slow
to respond. This problem occurs on pages that contain multiple frames or when multiple frame navigations occur quickly. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=EF6EA470-D51C-4BE5-A15B-74430E9E2AD4&displaylang=en

I hope this helps!
