Channel 9 goes to FooCamp

Hey, check this out.

Jeff and I went to O'Reilly's FooCamp this past weekend.

I'll write more tonight. It was awesome. How awesome? Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, told me that he hangs out on Channel 9.

Folks at Google told me they were thinking of doing their own Channel 9-style thing. Let the worst videos win!

Dude, I'm very honored to get to go. This is my second year. It's an unbelieveable event. Part of that is its total exclusivity.

Literally I was the lowest IQ person there.

I'm still absorbing what I saw (and some things, like the guy who was building DNA algorithms, were just so far above my IQ level that I have no hope).

Here's one sample of what it's like:

On Saturday at lunch I sat with Jeff Bezos, Stewart Brand, Mitch Kapor, Esther Dyson, and a couple of other big names who I now forget.

How did I get invited? When O'Reilly was almost going bankrupt I kept sending him conference ideas. Lesson there somewhere: help people when they are down and they'll remember you when they get back up.

And he's definitely back up.

Don't worry, realistically I knew I wasn't going next year. I'm glad I didn't go as I'm intimidated by you nevermind everyone else. It still would have been great fun.

No hard feelings. Just make sure to blog it extensively and I won't hold it against you

I wonder who come up with the channel 9 guy idea? Did a graphic designer designed it or was it all by you?

I drew up the original Channel 9 guy, he was 2-D.  David Shadle took him to the next level and gave him his sleek 3D profile.  You can see his evolution from my original to final here.

Yeah, we were talking about nuclear energy and someone let out that Esther's dad might have something interesting to say about the topic. Then someone else, who didn't know who Esther's dad was, asked "why would he have something to say?" I think Bezos answered "he's a physicist." Then the table got silent for half a second and someone said "that's an understatement."

I'm still trying to process everything that happened this weekend.

I asked Bezos why he started Amazon. He said he was watching the 2500% growth curve of the Internet and thought he wanted to be involved in this somehow.

Is he designed to look like he is made of lego?

I want to go back and check out more of this later. Hit the Glen Beck link and it just kinda brought me to a screeching halt for now.............
