Don't you think
this is getting a bit ridiculous?

I tend to agree that it is overboard, but then again....I can't think of a better way to do it. If Microsoft named each application just "calendar", or "mail", etc, think of all of the lawsuits.

well let's see
DVD Maker,
Media Centre
Movie Maker
Media Player
and Photo Gallery
could all go into an application folder called "Media"
Calendar
Contacts
Fax and Scan
and Mail
could all go into a application folder called "Applications" -

I'd have to agree that isn't a good idea. I thought MS learned something about this naming problem when they finally removed 'Microsoft' (or 'Windows' I can't recall which used to be ubiquitous) from the front of every service name in Server '03 services. I guess those two teams didn't talk.

Install Office 2003 sometime:
"Microsoft Office Access 2003
Microsoft Office Excel 2003
Microsoft Office Word 2003
Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003"
MS will never "get it", it's part of their coporate image. Whilst they could get "it", it won't last long before the Politically-Correct crowd gets into it, and even if they escape that, then everyone will accuse them of copying Apple.
They should take a look at how NeXTStep did it. Best OS evah.

Even some of the earlier builds needed some serious decluttering. I hate having to scroll down a screen just to see the folders in my Start Menu.
Personally, I'd like to see an option to display a full-height menu - basically the same, but higher on the left. They could even make it slide upwards to look snazzy.
Even if you have just a few programs, the menu (even with the commonly used programs area) simply doesn't cut it.
I will be very disappointed if Microsoft says that the Start Search function is the "cure" for this problem - the very idea of typing in the program I want to run, when it should be in a nice simple menu, is ridiculous. Indeed, my programs have been in a nice simple menu for the last 10 years.
Heh, either that or we'll be seeing a balloon saying "You have unused icons in your Start Menu. Click here to clean it up.".
Microsoft should also think about the amount of bloated software (and unbloated, to be fair) OEM's are installing on their machines these days. There has to be space for Dell's MyWay search - an absolutely necessary OS component for all users (apparently)
.
The menu will be full to the brim right from the machine's first run, for many people.
