Thanks for the heads-up regarding COLLADA, eddwo. It's not something I've heard requests for, but based on the Wikipedia article, it sounds like a very useful format. Off to investigate...

Cast my vote for VRML/X3D. Tools like 3DS Max and Maya already export to these formats so it could be killing a cople of birds. X3D might be comparitvely easier since it's an XML format.
