Nitz you are right. There are people in the community who care about this stuff. Are there are indeed people inside Redmond to whom it matters. But on the whole, it just isn't reflected in the quality of the products.

I hope this will change in Vista. WPF/XAML is a huge step in the right direction  (and a big investment for MS) and I am currently reading through Petzold's WPF book whilst working on a font manager application for Vista. I am deeply impressed by the technology, but I fear that it will go largely ignored by Windows developers.

We'll see.
