GUI means Graphical User Interface, which is use for every OS that is out there today. Was first invented by Xerox. Windows is one of the easiest and is the most popular OS out there day is now at a stand point. Windows XP user interface is much the same as in Windows 95 but with a pretty look to it. I believe that Longhorn should take the next step make Longhorn more customize so that you can have two OS that look nothing a like but be Windows. Something that I don't have to install to get my Windows to look like I want it to look. I just want the next Windows OS to look like it's in the future.

I forgot about one thing, the main thing that I start this post. Why don't Microsoft do a contest on the look of the Longhorn and the best looking GUI wins? I know 1000s of people will sign up for it and you guys will get a really cool looking OS.

I agree 100%, however, I can understand why Microsoft do not do this. Changing a GUI is easy compared to the hours of frustration that it will cause most of the users with relearning where things are. MS is the top OS, which means they have to keep a LOT more people happy.
I recently installed OSX and was just blown away by the UI... but it did take me a few minutes to get use to it again and I've been using Mac's on and off since they were invented.
MS could do a lot more to make the UI more appealing (perhaps a bit more than putting a drop shadow on the mouse
. However, I think Longhorn is doing to surprise use all... it's got a pretty cool rendering engine under the hood.
Anyway, if you want to customise your UI have a look at stardock http://www.stardock.com/.

Well I like the idea of being able to change the look of the OS like we want. I mean, I like the luna theme but maybe if I could change things, or have a easy way to modifi it that would be great.
I can't wait for Longhorn Beta...
Go MS, work hard, we want to test it... -
Just don't copy, like with BlueCurve.

I want to believe they didn't lock up themes in XP *just* to sell XP Plus but something in me tells me that's exactly why they did it. :-/
Lets hope we can make themes in longhorn without having to patch part of the operating system.

I have tried stardock, windows blinds and a few others and i just like the original look and feel of windows. Call me old fashioned.

The thing about those program is that it makes Windows unstable for some people. I don't understand why they dont do it with Windows built in theme.

I think there's more to it than that. Mac OS 9, Windows XP, Mac OS X, BeOS - none of them came with a built in feature for custom skins.
Why? Branding. It's good for everyone's copy of {product} to look consistent, even if you let them change some colors here and there.

That makes no sense .. Microsoft could easily throw into the OEM contract a clause which forces them to leave it default. And anyway if a OEM did change the theme users would back away because they get scared by the unfamiliar.

I’m expecting a 3DUI in Longhorn, remember the GPU will be have a prominent role in this next generation OS.
