Awhile back, the ASP.NET Forums seemed to be a Microsoft shared source thing that the old www.asp.net was running and we could examine the source code for ideas. I remember at one time it was updated to .NET 2.0.
But it seems like it has turned into a commercial product? Did Telligent Systems "buy" the code from Microsoft? Or can we still download the source code? I've been googling and every link to a potential download I find redirects to a "Buy Now" thing at Telligent
Systems.
What is the story with this thing?
I still have the v1.1 source that I downloaded a few years back but I'd like to take a look at the v2.0 source. Anyone download it way back when and still have it around?

A part of the old asp.net site is still up, though it's broken.

You can still download it.
Microsoft.com says you can, you can see it under ASP.NET Samples
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sharedsource/Licensing/Developer.mspx
And this is the place to download it:
http://www.asp.net/Forums/Download/
It wasn't very easy to find, I don't think they want people downloading it anymore. I says it requires the .NET Framework 1.0 so it doesn't look like its for 2.0
. Telligent probably took over the project before then because Community Server 1.x was built
on ASP.NET 1.1.
EDIT: Just made the URLs hyperlinks; I always forget to do that because the toolbar doesn't work in Firefox. -
Yeah those downloads are for the original ASP.NET version. There was a time when the 2.0 version was under development and you could download the source code but I can't dig up any of the old links.

If you want to email to support at geekpedia dot com, I will happily post it right away in the Downloads section of Geekpedia.com for anyone else that might be interested (and I'm sure many will.)Lucifer79 said:I have both v1 and v2 of the ASP.NET Forums - where can i upload them so anyone can download them?

The Channel 9 dev team is also working to make the source code for this site (and all our other sites) available. No ETA yet but it's not a huge amount of work. Just have to make a branch that doesn't contain any "secret" code.Andrei P said:

It's to all of our shame that any large companies are running vBulletin nowadays.

What's wrong with us?
Lets get our butts in gear and create a more robust ASP.NET forum package.
@Erik...You guys may just plant the needed seed with this contribution.

Ha! There aren't any (luckily). At least that we know of. Maybe Adam left an f-bomb in there before he left for fun. Who knows? You all will have to find it and tell us.Simo said:

Thanks for your confidence in what we do, wisemx! Our goal with releasing the source code though is to make it available to all of you so you can learn from it, "steal" from it, etc. If you happen to use it as "the new ASP.NET forum package" so be it. We won't stop you. You may have noticed though we don't have "every" feature out there in our forums. We'll continue to add features over time, but I wouldn't ever expect us to get even close to feature parity with other forum software out there.wisemx said:It's to all of our shame that any large companies are running vBulletin nowadays.

I'm an optimistic believer and I would never take without asking.HumanCompiler said:

That's why I put "steal" in quotes. Nobody will actually be stealing anything. We'll give it away (under MS-PL).
