"​Troll" has lost its meaning?

After the occaction of Jamie being called a troll (even though maybe not directly), I take this opportunity raise my voice regarding something I have been thinking about for some time...

Do you think that word like Troll and FUD have lost their meaning, or at least lost lot of their values through inflation?

It seems to me, as they are tossed in as soon as somebody have a different meaning than your self.

Maybe it is time to find a new forum nomenclature?

Rory didn't call Jamie a troll, he said that Jamie's thread was a troll. 

The verb, "to troll" is not the same as the noun "a troll".

Unfortunately, they are spelled the same

I kind of agree, though.  I think we should save the troll comments for the really talented trolls.

We can just continue to assume the rest are alts for Beer28.

Edit: and it still doesn't make much sense since Rory called it a troll.
        Anyway, nobody called Jamie a troll.

Whoa...how did you come to that conclusion? I've seen some pretty "talented" trolls here but I doubt they are all by the same person.

Besides, I don't even think Jamie's post was a "troll"...I think it just hit a raw nerve with Rory, and the two should sit down and talk it out over a few brews.

I think you're probably right.

I felt that Jamie's post attacked more than it helped (don't know if that makes sense, but that's the thought that came out of my head).

And it *did* hit a nerve. One of the things I dealt with when on the road and going up in front of customers was *constantly* being told things like, "Yeah, well, I switched to FIREFOX" - this, always followed by an intense glare as though I was being challenged.

Now I have little patience for the Firefox-is-soooooo-much-better camp. I have no problems whatsoever with the opinion - everybody's entitled, of course - but I happen to *like* IE7, and when someone states that IE7 is, as a matter of *fact*, not any good, then, yeah, it rubs me the wrong way.

I called Jamie's post a troll because it seemed to me that he was trolling.

Regarding the question of what is/isn't a troll, everybody needs to remember that troll does *not* refer to those mythological creatures who live under bridges and like to club people. Rather, it's the verb which refers to fishing by cruising around with your baited line dragging behind the boat.

It did eventually come about that the people who regularly did this were referred to as "trolls," but the act of trolling itself is something distinct from the person - that's why it's possible to say that Jamie is *not* a troll, but that Jamie *was* trolling.

This is rather nitpicky, but there you go.

I thought you were leaving us...? Haven't you caused enough disruption around here? When you speak out against Microsoft on Channel 9 you either get attacked, labeled a troll or banned.  Look at what happened to ChrisA, beer28 and others.  All Linux advocates banned for talking Linux on Channel 9

We have plenty of Linux users posting every day and they are very welcome here. They are, however, intelligent people.

Not like I slam everything and start proclaiming OSX as the best thing since perforated bread.  Sure I post OSX topics, and I occassionally bring it into conversation (at which point I normally get ignored anyway ), I'd be doing more damage than harm by acting like these guys.

If you love OSX, mention it The community isn't scared to talk about other platforms. Heck, I see linux conversations going on here, intelligent ones at that. And nobody gets hurt - until one of linux-asses comes over to throw a fit. Those are the guys I cannot stand. Even though I still like linux. I love windows though, much more

I don't like windows...It's ugly, linux is so pretty. It's better. Windows is bad, and horrible, and dumb too. Linux is perfect, I can help make it. Linux is really cool. Why do you guys use windows? You didn't help make it. Why don't you use linux, you can help make it. We have gimp.
