Isn't the ribbon bar to help surface most used functionality and make it more accessible because there's just SO MUCH functionality in Office?  IE doesn't seem to have a ton of functionality compared to Office (as it shouldn't), so what would the need be for a ribbon bar?

Fake - quick sample of if IE used some type of ribbon. 
(i think it could work...?)

main home screen - could look like anything - id place stuff like ie6 version (as there would be many icons and options to pick and choose from)

Tools - more graphical...  (themes on right)  *this is not final placement - just threw stuff in to show "bringing out options"

security - same thing - just more graphical.  * menus would change on mouse-over - not click, so when you moved your hand away - it would automatically go back to home/browser

Video section - soapbox - after you log in it would show your page from then on

Photos - again it wouldnt be this page after logging in

Blog - it would be your blog - upload options and more could go on bar

Blog 2 - you could integrate windows live writer

Help - whatever - for idiots

and just to keep it in one thread - here's that other graphic from today - that shows having toolbars come out - or go anywhere.

What about those who have limited screen space?

I want more browsing space, not enlarged toolbars.

Change placement of stuff, not size.

I think borrowing the some of the concepts from the Office 2007 UI make a lot of sense. The Office button (IE button?) and the Quick Access Toolbar, in particular, could be used to reorganize much of the functionality on the Command Bar. The Ribbon, on the other hand, seems awfully out of place. Most of what you're trying to expose seems to be configuration options or functionality best left to other applications or plug-ins--perhaps adding additional buttons to the QAT. I think HC's original point it important: Internet Explorer is designed to be an application for consuming web content--it isn't really geared towards creating or editing, and so there's far less functionality to surface. Add the fact that have to rows of tabs looks a little unweildy and I really can't see the ribbon being a workable solution for IE.

FWIW, here's my (decidely less polished) exploration of the problem:



Nothing too remarkable. Labels are B (Backward), F (Forward), S (Stop), R (Refresh), Q (Quick Tabs), and N (New Tab). My only real "artistic licenses" are the idea of a group restore (G) and moving the navigation strip below the tab strip. The idea behind group restore is to provide an easy "undo" function if you accidently close a tab or groups of tabs you didn't mean to or if you close an IE window with multiple tabs--in the later case, the hope is that this mitigates the need for the warning dialogue. The rationale behind moving the naviagation strip below the tabs it that it better reenforces the association between the controls and the content. (Both these ideas exist in some form in other browsers (Opera, I think).) Aside from that, the only other thing worth noting is that, similar to Office 2007, the QAT can be toggled to be below the navigation strip. Oh, I wouldn't mind having floating letters on Alt to aid in learning the keyboard controls.

Anyways, that's my two cents...

Well I'm asking my self, what do we realy need new in IE8 accept new technology. I mean everything works, the protocoll comes to its end. I would love to see Microsoft to come with a browser who supports asychronic window development support like normal apps.

So that <window><button name="hello world" onclick="msgbox('Hellow world!')"></button></window> is possible.

And make that new protocoll W3C supported.

I quite like those designs Jamie, pretty cool.

If they integrated Live Writer and soapbox though they would get shouted at, rather loudly I would imagine. It would have to be configurable.

I also think it might be a little too specific, like blog, I think that is way way way too specific. How many people actually have a blog, compared to the number of people who use IE? 1%?

Well, I was thinking of asking for several new tags to be added to xhtml. Perhaps MS would like to push for their adoption:

• The "Tongue in Cheek" tag, for people who take everything too seriously, you could label your text as being not serious. Thus allowing the browser to display warnings or format the text to make it clear that the content isn't serious. (Perhaps by using circles to dot is instead of a dot.)
• The Sarcasm tag, for when, you know, the enormous intellect of your reader's misses a subtle and nuanced use of language which indicates sarcasm.
• The Camp Tone Of Voice tag, especially useful when bitching about people's fashion sense.
• The Teenage Girl's Stream Of Consciousness tag. Because like I want to say something, but this guy's all "you're really stupid" and I'm all like "shut up" and they don't listen to me because they're all bitches and whenever that simone says anything I feel like "shut up (I need to watch my language)" and I want to strangle her but it makes me discracted and my spelling all goes wonky and the teahers are all like "you're suptid cos you can't spell" and I'm all like "shut up" and they never listen anyway and it's all soooooo unfair. (Especially useful for MySpace methinks.)

That's not such a bad idea. 

Jamie, you don't seem to have any issues with the rendering so you could quite easily just use the IE7 rendering engine and a handful of devs to get this thing built.  Sometimes, the only way to get what you want - is to build it youself

The ribbon in Office 2007 can be minimized to a very small size... That shouldn't be a problem.

What I see with jamie's ideas is that other companies are going to sue Microsoft, because of their integration of their products... We had already problems with the search box. Immagine all those other things...

they are just the defaults.  for example as if any one here would use spaces.  theyd have their own blog or forum () they would add.

One of the main things i hate about blogs / online photos / my space...youtube is all the logins and settings - and even finding the urls.  sure - add them to favourites.. but i never seem too.

if however - IE had sections like this - youd just set it once and the browser would do the logging in remembering.  sort of like Flock.

Id also prefer integrated Live Writer as i dont like leaving browser to open it - and having it feel separate.

Also please remember the screenshot above showing detached toolbars etc - there's one called Simple ... want nothing but the address bar and back? thin? no ribbon? FINE

the main idea is the next version can be all things to all people - and it really wouldnt be all that hard to do.

Put coolbars back (you have that code) and add a ribbon (thick or thin depending on default icon sizes you choose.) then make all the above detachable/dockable to any side or floating.

yaj ok - its not ...that..easy.. but at the end of the day - everyone here could have IE how they like it.  just like IE7 even! 

The ribbon idea makes perfectly sense for IE 8.

I noticed in the Technical refresh that you can minimize the ribbons and they would expand if you hover over the top buttons.

ya but let's assume that Maxthon - is a good example of what can be done with the ie control.  it doesnt work properly.  drag an image into a form box - the page disappears.  there are too many things ie does on the top level - to be "disguised" in a sort of application frame that breaks stuff (like msn explorer did/does.)

no...our only hope is for ms to offer way way more customization.  and dont forget themes on all of the above
