My understanding is that they aren't planning to release Media Player 11 for Server 2003. I guess the reasoning was that only a small population of people use Windows Server as a desktop, so it wasn't worth the broader test matrix or something like that.

That's what I thought until I downloaded
Winamp.

At first I thought WMP11 had a great, shiny little interface, but the more I used it the more frustrated I became at how inefficient and awkward it was to use. There's so much wasted space, it's confusing to use and only the "outside" areas are polished up.

I don't like WMP11 one bit.

It has foisted some vista look and feel on me. I'm, not using vista. I'm using XP.

The menu system is as random and awful as ever.
I dont want my list grouped into albums with all these pictures! But unlike, say, explorer, can I right click and change view? nooo.. I have to hunt around for the right icon on the none-standard toolbar

Coffeehouse - Windows Media Player 11 Out Now

It's funny that supposed "tech-savvy" folks can't even figure out how to use a simple media player. I (can almost) guarantee that MS used usability tests and picked an interface that would be easy to use by the masses. Me thinks that those that struggle
to use WMP don't want to use it in the first place for whatever reason, and so are predisposed to find it "diffiult" to use.

BTW, Winamp sucks, and has for years; talk about a cluttered mess.

I like the new WMP. I've been using the beta for a while, and noticed some bugs in the UI. But those are apparently all gone. One of my biggest complaints about the beta (you can find my complaints in an older C9 thread) was that you couldn't navigate
the UI with the keyboard. And they fixed that. You can easily tab through the entire UI (even the minimize, maximize and close buttons).

Yeah. I'm one of this forums famous anti-ms zealots.

Thats a poor argument and simply a way of dismissing criticism. I dont purposefully find it difficult to use - I just find it difficult to use. It is un-intuitive, and while I know it will do everything I want I sometimes have to fish about in menus till I
find what I want and its just *frustrating*. I wouldnt care if it were once or twice but it seems every time I go to use it I again have to fish around in menus looking for stuff.

I dont want to have to invest the amount of time to learn how to use it that I seem to have to. Its a media player - it should just work. Its possible because others do it.

And why Vista look and feel? I dont object to vista as such bu I do object to a tiny bit of vista in xp. it looks and behaves differently to everything else. When I use media player I nwo have to mentally switch a "its like vista" switch to use it - and I shouldnt
have to.

And no right click on the list to change view. Come on. Please tell me thats not standard in vista.

At least making playlists seems easier than it used to.

Coffeehouse - Windows Media Player 11 Out Now

I like WMP11 far better than previous versions. It finally got me to use WMP as my main player because of its much more useful interface. I used to always like Winamp, but just never liked opening more than one window to do everything I want. With WMP
11 its all in one place.

It didn't really take that long to get used to it and if you don't like seeing the Album pictures change the view. Sure it would be nice if the right click worked for that, but the icon to do it isn't all that far away.

And for those complaining about the skin, its far more useful and nicer to use than the old ones. And if you don't like it, then use another one as it still supports changing the skin like previous versions.

I do wish some of the better features were available in the web window versions. Well I mean you can't adjust things like equalizer and cross-fade from that window. I have an IRC program that can play mp3's and uses the web interface of WMP but there is no
connection between it and WMP itself. If I hit stop on WMP, it doesn't stop the playing if the web interface is playing. Don't know if I explained that, but there should be a connection (could be perhaps poor coding in the IRC plug-in I suppose).

Anyway WMP11 is a real winner in my book. Its my main player now.

Coffeehouse - Windows Media Player 11 Out Now

Today I had a "media player off" with a co worker. I was using the latest itunes and he was using WMP11. By the end of the day I was ready to admit that WMP11 was superior until I pulled out the "format card". Turns out that WMP11 can not play a mp4 by
default. Why does WMP11 not play these by default? It's not a big deal to download a codec but there would be much more converts from the iTunes world if it did.

I think the best feature over itunes is the ability to get info about your tracks. The copy and paste album art is nice as well as finding the info about an untitled track and then finding all of the related "untitleds". I read that the synchronization with
external drives is very good but I will have to wait and see.

I have never been a WMP fan at all but the latest release looks really good. It is finally catching up to itunes.

Coffeehouse - Windows Media Player 11 Out Now

Hey folks,

My first post here and it's a bit of a rant on a old thread...

WMP 11 arrives and all that gets mentioned is the GUI???

It's got no new features over WMP10 to call anything.
It still can't do the most basic things I would expect from a media player.

Where is:

Aspect ratio adjustment?
Audio stream selection?
DirectX Codec managerment?
The equivalent of WMPTSE?
Hardware DD5.1 decoder support?
VOB support?
RIFF tags in AVIs?
Replaygain?
Winamp like Smart Views
Tree view of Genre, Actors, etc in the Navigation Pane to allow drag and drop tagging?

Compared to the sheer range of functionality that Winamp has, WMP11 isn't even in the race.
The only thing WMP wins on IS the GUI as Winamp's multiple windows are a pain.
