Thank you all for your patience, may I now present with a few previews of where Ch9 is headed for the future. Look carefully at each picture as not everything is fully explained and left to your powers of observation and debate.

First, I present Flat vs. Threaded. Where did we end up? Ooh the intrigue...

And plus, for your viewing pleasure, a glimpse out a conceptual piece of work representing the new HomePage. And, oh, what is this? Some sort of grand Über Tag page? Very Interesting...

You've struck me with awe. The visual style is even better than what we have now. The threaded/flat view is great: it's threaded while looking flat. I think a lot of flat-fans will be happy. The reply-popup (instead of opening a new page) is so useful: sometimes when replying, I need to go back to view some posts I was replying to. This is more than just screenshots, it's a cool presentation.

Very slick. I'm impressed. I think you may have nailed flat view-- provided people actually use the threading correctly...

The pixel art on the main page looks pretty slick, too. Taking Channel9 back to its roots. No "Web 2.0 We have a fancy undersaturated gradient so we must be good" here!

I wonder if you are going to change the top picture (the street) depending on the season: winter, summer, spring, autumn,... That would be cool!

Edit: something that would be even cooler: include also the local time. Use a javascript that loads the picture depening on the user's time: it shows the street in the morning, during day, evening, night + the seasons... Wow! That would be awesome!

I would LIKE that A LOT! Looks like there is always something going on on Channel 9 and customizes the page on the readers settings.

Edit 2: Sure this could be even extended to have different pictures that are timed and seasoned, but that would be a lot work.

Looking really cool, I think the FlatThreaded thing looks like it'll really work well too.

Not so sure about the big avatars though, I've kinda got used to the small avatars view and it gives you a lot more room horizontally. Will this still be an option?

I love the new forums look. One feature request for the ignore, maybe you could have an option that it doesn't just hide posts by that user, but also posts that are direct replies to ignored posts (so you don't have to deal with posts that're just feeding the trolls either).

And I will assume that clicking "view" on an ignored post will use Ajax to load the ignored post text, not refresh the page.

While I love the forums, I'm not so sure about the homepage, and especially the header. It's too busy.

But overall, good work.

All I can say at the moment is "Wow!" Nice screenshots. I love it. Everything about it is nice and clean. Like the little touch there with the black down arrow and the area its currently in in the menus.

The slideshow of the new changes, cool idea. Never thought that you would release screenshots in that way. Figured it would be simple screenshot(s) in a new thread or something. Niice work.

With the "Threaded vs Flat" view, Nice. I'm a flat guy, but this is definately doable/workable.

The replying to thread/post/person. I definately like. I sometimes wonder about pressing the "reply" button now the way it is, and I've come to think that its just a normal reply to "thread", but I still go to the top of the page and post if its to the thread in general, or click reply on the post i'm replying to. Weird, yes. I'm assuming correctly that there is no real relation to posts/replies other than the thread they belong to right? This new layout is most excellent.

New Thread/Post/reply. I love it. It still stays on the page and brings focus to the reply/post are about to type into. Hopefully though it comes up quicker than the current system in place. I mean with it loading up all the editor buttons/faces etc. How about adding a setting/preference some where to shut off all that "fancy" stuff and just have a real simple post/reply popup?

As for the Currently online C9'ers.. Hrmphff.. No more scrolling box? I thought that was a neat feature. Maybe keep it the way it is in the new system, but allow a preference for scrolling or paging. That would be cool.

The media player. Niice. I don't use the online player thuogh as its more "low" quality than I like. I usually just set a download going on my linux box for the HQ WMV download available using "wget" and after a bit of downloading happens, set WMP to play the file while its still downloading. So maybe allow a feature/preference to shut off the player functionality, but still keep the snapshot image in place and the DL links. Also have maybe the ability to "choose" which DL links are seen. Like for me, all I'd use is the WMP (high) link. I'm sure though, if someone were to give/donate me one of those new shmancy fancy "to die for" Zunes, I'd have that too! hehe.

Lets see, "750px" layout. I assume is scalable to the user's actual screen size? How is this working?

New Tagging system/page.. Don't change a thing! I like the new stuff, especially the "blogs" based on WPF stuff.

The new homepage.. ahh.. what else is there to say.. again, there, don't change a thing.

All in all, if none of the ideas/suggestions i've mentioned above arn't added/changed, so what. Its still a GREAT most excellent new C9! C9 Team, you've pretty much outdone yourself and then some. I bet there have been many many late nights working on this eh? So dedicated to your work. Keep it up.

Ok now, get back to work and get the new site "shipped!" Hehe.

I think that you really have nailed the thread v flat argument and I like the implementation of the Ignore feature, I'm ssssssssssoooooo going to ignore Diva Blowdart!!!!

So what can I and can't I attach? Is it just for 'pegs ?

The new title bar is actually good fun, specially if it changes over time, but I still would like to see the word's 'Channel 9!' on the title bar, but I won't cry if thats not there.

Now I really like the tag pages ... that is really cool! Can we submit articles ?

Great work! I, like the other niners, feel that you have defeated our skepticism regarding the Threaded/Flat issue, you pulled it together very nicely. Sorry for doubting you

Let me TRY to be critical - because you made it very difficult to find problems I love the new header, very cool. But I agree with a few other niners that shuffling this fromt time to time (or even shuffle four specific jpegs reflecting the time of day) would be cool...just to give it some variation.

The 750px fixed-width page is a bit 1995-ish, when everybody was working on 800x600. Today many of us are using 1280x1024 and up. Don't get me started on Jamie's ridiculous freak-monster resolution of 3904x1200.

How does a full-screen thread fit into a 750px-wide layout? Maybe there's something we're all missing.

On the front page, it would be nicer if the "latest posts" preview was closer to the top, so that we don't have to scroll down to see it. It's one of the first things I look for when coming to channel9

Please keep the HTML-view in Posting....please

About screen sizes,

at home i use a gateway lcd thats 1680x1050

narrow layouts look so odd sometimes, but I can do 2 average pages side-by-side on that screen.

at work it's 1280x1024 and the current 9 looks ok but I wish it would fill-out wider....

also some posts with large images in the current 9 blow the layout and make it look bad....

so I'd like to see a use of css and whatever to see the users screen size and make some calls on what width to flow to.

I agree w/ Jamie on this... On several forums that I am on the search is better then what is proposed. I hope there is the ability to just search specific forums or shows for content.

/me disagrees with Jamie's rant, less is more, IMO.

It does seem a bit too narrow though, imagine if the text was a little bigger on the home page, there would be a separerate line for every three words.

I'm not a fan of popup boxes for posting, because it covers up the rest of the page. It's good that you can still see the text you're replying to, however, you can't see any of the other posts because of the popup box. Why not put the reply box at the bottom of the page? You can still hide and show it the same way.

Otherwise I'm not disappointed, yet.

I really like the new color scheme. It's very pleasant. I like littleguru's idea of the time changing banner graphics. Maybe C9 can comission a niner to do that

But, I have problems with the hybrid Threaded/Flat view.

I understand the need to specify replying to a post, or to the thread. To make past threads look the same, right? But I like to have it up to the user to stay with the Flat view or not.

I think we would effectively eliminate the Flat view because most people would leave the default option of replying to a post. People can post whichever method they want, but a reader should also view it in whichever way they choose.

Also, yes to HTML view. Kudos to attachments. Yes to narrow width -- but allow wide content on per-post basis?

I'd also like to resonate other Niners' support for Adam.

Thumbs might actually work out pretty well. If they were noted in a footnote fashion. Say I have four "attachments" at the bottom.

"Hey guys, I was working on my web page ¹, when I got this error message ². Has anybody ever seem Adam's new design? ³. It is sweet, but I'm not a big fan of the lack of text-editing options ⁴."

And then the graphics at the bottom are all links to full-scale images. I think that would be awesome. It would keep people from stretching the content to undesirable widths, and also cleanup the presentation-layer around here.

I disagree. If we keep it the way it is, my screen in forced to display potentially tons of images which will actually piss me off from time to time. It increases load-time, and clutters my screen.

It images are kept in check, and displayed as thumbnails, I have the freedom to chose what can, and cannot, litter my screen. Besides, I can see what your graphic is plain as daylight. If I am interested in it, I can click and get more detail.

Seems fair. But I understand your view too.

Hehe... I'm catching up on reading new posts.

I just couldn't imagine the forum without inline images. I couldn't think of a reason why anyone would want this -- so, I assume the attachments were an addition of functionality instead of replacing images. But, yeah, it'd be bad if we couldn't do inline images.

I could be awesome if we could upload images as attachments, then, display them inline in the same post, though.

The editor, I definitely will miss "cross-out", "font-size", "font-color" for sure. I don't use thje other buttons, but others may, so I say, keep them all.

PS. with the threaded view, I hope the (quote) tag doesn't go away. Actually, I'd like to see it expanded. Say... a "Quote Selected Text" button, that throws a (quote) tag around whatever you're selecting. Makes it easy to inline answering something.

I doubt the thumbnails are the same load-times. Chances are they are compressed on the server before they are locally stored. This is what the channel9 site does with our Avatars too. It shrinks them, and lowers the file-size.

But I concede your point. Inline images are necessary. And if they are kept to a max-width of 640x480, that would be excellent as long as they are still links to the full-size image.

I suppose the Attachments would come in handy for Techoff, and similar areas too. If I could attach myPage.aspx.vb that would rock Instead of having to paste all of my code (which brings up automated-code-formatting which is would be nice! too).

Go to this url, and go halfway down the screen to the screenshots section - clicking on a preview thumbnail shows quite a nice view of the full thing.

To me it seems that you guys are getting all worked up about this. Just relax, these are conceptual designs, I don't see the front page really looking like this when it goes live. It seems to me that they are still working on layout, item placement and stuff.

I have a few complaints ...

1. Width. It's just silly to have the site so narrow. Try to go liquid, with some minimum width.

2. Header image. Takes way to much of the attention. Way to many colors and too distracting. KISS.

3. Forum.

Looks a lot better than today. But I would urge you to allow us to choose weather to view small or large avatars in the threads.

Attatchments sound great, but allow for inline images too. But try to keep the minimun with so it won't blow the layout.

Ignore feature, rocks.

Reply box ... dunno. On the Gamespot forums you have a really convinient "quick reply" button. I like the limited functions on the editor ... that's really all we need, regardless of what Jamie says on removing things. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.

I have a few other comments, but I am going with my son right now to see some Monster Trucks run around here in Stockholm

On10's videos are compatible with other web browsers (at least Firefox, haven't tried opera), so c9.next should be too.

Just curious, are you guys also working on keeping the site from exploding when viewed on a mobile client/other small screen sizes?

On10 isn't much better in this respect (but it is some, partly due to the omission of the niners-online bar and the Javascript drop-down menus).

You can turn the niners-online bar off in your profile settings...

I have to say that I was somewhat sceptical about the Channel9 overhaul. I was fairly confident that whatever you guys produced would meet my needs as I mostly only view the videos (and the odd related comment).

The question in my mind was would the more dedicated and 'embedded' Channel9 users (of which I think there are many) be suitably please? I was a little worried that if the overhaul didn't quite hit the spot then Channel9 could become 'unfit for service'... therefore annoying all the avid niners, therefore they all give up and leave, therefore microsoft stop putting any weight behind Channel9, therefore I have no quality videos to watch on a Friday afternoon, therefore the end of the world as I know it! [C]

Okay, maybe my thoughts got a little carried away! Anyway I know know that I have nothing to worry about and Channel9 is well and truely safe!

Seriously guys I am really impressed with what you have done! I take it that Adam has spent many hours in Photoshop? The visuals are top notch the UI seems to be efficient, logical and effective and as long as the performance of the site is up to scratch then I have every confidence that the new version of Channel9 will be a complete success! For all niners!

We have plans for a mobile view, but I don't think we've even done mockups of that yet. My current plan, keeping in mind I'm just one of the devs, not one of the design guys , is that the mobile view would be very very simple... almost no styling... just the content

We totally agree and will do our best to present a great experience with Firefox, the variety of flavors of Internet Explorer and the later releases of Opera. We have had some challenges with Opera in the past, but I believe the recent versions make browser compatability easier.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I went through all of your comments and summed up the important items many of you brought up so we can talk about them and here are answers to common questions that I actually know the answer to.

Q: Why is the screenshot so skinny?
A: Adam built the mockup to the smallest size we'll allow, which will fit on a tablet pc. You will have the option to make it width:100%

Q: Editor is too simple. Where'd my options go?
A: Aside from simple things like cross-out that's how it will more than likely be. Being able to change font, etc starts to make everything look like myspace. Nobody wants that do they? We need a little uniformity so everything's readable to everybody.

Q: WTH, HTML VIEW IS GONE?!?!
A: Yes, again, uniformity. That said, we'll probably have another view where you can still do some underlying editing, but it will be a custom language of some sort, not play html view.

Q: No inline images?
A: I know how I personally feel about this one (allow inline images that don't affect the site), but not sure about the rest of the team. Will let you know.

Q: Rossj: Who's doing the web service APIs?
A: Me. We're still in the design phases for this. Send me an e-mail.

Q: Search is too simple
A: Search will not be like it is on 10. The search box you see will be there, so you can do a quick simple search on everything in the site. Once you're there (and maybe there will be a shortcut link to it as well) you'll be able to narrow it down by forum, user, media type, etc).

Q: Pop-up box gets in the way
A: Agreed. I have some code already that will allow you to drag it around to wherever you want. It will be in a fixed position regardless of the browser scrollbar so you'll be able to find anything behind it you want.

Q: Will quoting still be there?
A: Yes. However, when using quoting, you will not have the option to post to the thread (unless you clicked reply on the thread). As for the idea about it quoting what you currently have selected. You read our minds.

Q: Browser Support
A: IE 7 (don't know about 6 yet) and FF for sure. Most of the stuff should work in Opera 9, but not sure if we'll have time to get it 100% up to par. Same thing for Safari.

Screenwidth - I know noone reads text, but if you look here, the second paragraph talks about the forums using the full screen width. The Homepage and TagPage previews that you saw were mocked up with a TabletPC in portrait mode in mind. I don't think we'll be able to truly detect this, but this would be an available theme called "pixel-thin". The default would be just "pixe" which would stretch across your screen.

Banner - Jeff talked about this already, but the goal is to have multiple versions that rotate. I really like the time based idea. It could also be a user option to set to a subdued banner, something like what we have today. And yes, we would love for Niners to create more banners that we could throw into the rotation.

Ignore - We were wondering if replies to ignored posts should be ignored as well, I think with your input we will now work to make that happen.

Avatar - Yes, large is nice, for most people. i think we'll reverse our decision and make large avatar the default, with small as a user option.

View Ignored Post - Yes, Ajax call here, as to not interrupt your reading experience.

Media Player - We'll call that a placeholder for now.

Non-IE Browers - Yes.

Attachements Bar - Definitely an additional feature to inline images. We're talking about ways to help restrict them in size, but we don't want to kill them.

Text Editor - We will lose some functionality because we are moving to a new text editor that does not have all the features yet. We are moving because we have direct control over the code, mainly so we can make it work well on all browsers and use it with Ajax. But we will work on regaining some of that functionality like HTML view.

Search - Same thing here this is due to time issues. Yes we want to make it better than 10, but I don't see this completed by the beta.

- direct image upload (most likely not)
- quick reply (sounds like it should be at the bottom)

For Niner videos, maybe you could allow a simple way to embed YouTube and Soapbox videos from the editor? That would punt the bandwidth issues to somebody else's servers.

No, you will not be able to see who has ignored you. This is mostly to encourage trolls to keep on posting. Nobody's listening and they don't know it, so who cares? This will encourage them to go away. I see why you might want it in case you offend someone, but I'd imagine if you offend someone and you didn't mean to, you'll see a post about it and can come up with your apologies.

. Not sure about non breaking spaces. Whatever it does, it must output XHTML. This is related to jamie asking for the ability to paste in HTML. Only if we can verify that it's XHTML, otherwise, we won't.

I agree. Somethimes you just want to post a damn pic without all issue of finding some site, uploading and then doing some html link. Some form of wysiwyg. Seems a bit strange you can post a 100MB vid on soapbox, but can't post a 20K jpg here?? I mean you can always kill a post or pic if needed. New stuff looks cool. - Can't you use the standard mediaplayer control. I never liked how websites try to implement their own player interface.

- new users: new users should get their validation mail 30 minutes after registration to slow down spamming. Editing the wiki should only be possible after a week.

- Uploading images: every user should have a limit (new users have to wait for a week to get space) of about 10 MB. One well known user should obviously have no limit at all.

pixel style iconish drawings are really hard to do - and they do look totally computer and c9 guy has that feel - so all is good.

that said however... those images are a tad.. um busy...

They've already fixed the video quality level at the same level as it is now, for bandwidth reasons:

There is absolutely no problems with video quality in my eyes. It works for me. At least in Windows. I haven't had the chance to check out linux/FF || mplayer. Last i remember newer vids worked great, but going back to two years ago.. it would pick out some gawd awful resolution (120xXXX something for example) and it would be really painful/annoying to watch. The Channel 9 Team has gone a long way since then. So I'm assuming its working in linux too still. Might just throw together a linux box again and test it out.

Well, I don't think they're photoshop mockups. I think they are probably real HTML, but I don't think it's all really implemented on top of EvNet yet. Only Adam knows, though...

Much of the backend code is written and the data transformation is also complete. Based on the positive feedback from this thread we'll now iterate forward on the design, incorporating the feedback and pushing towards a beta on http://beta.channel9.msdn.com/">http://beta.channel9.msdn.com

Really appreciate all the kind words, I know its hard to wait for stuff like this and its taken us longer than normal, but we're trying to strike a couple of balances here:

1. Don't mess Channel 9 (our flagship property) up. Yes, we really mean it when we say we're listening to you. It is not just lip service, we love this place.

2. Build a code-base that scales and prepares us for our future that is flexible that each site 9,10, Students, etc while still allowing for the sites not to look like cookie cookers.

3. Ship something cool that you all deserve and do it soon!

Nothing to hide here, its early in the planning phase and I've talked in the past that we're hiring an Evangelist for our team to help connect better with students. Our team will be taking what is known as The Spoke and driving it forward this year (http://www.thespoke.net/">http://www.thespoke.net). We're working in lock step with the Microsoft folks who create the Imagine Cup event and I couldn't be more excited about it.

I know your saying oh man, another site? One thing we've heard loud and clear though is that people are tired of us creating new sites and forcing you to create new accounts. We're working on that too and pulling together the dispirate community sites around the company so we can be better together. Its important that there are different sites and I believe each can have there own design, tone and style. However it is equally important not to force a new sign-on for our users on each site and we should make sure that the sites work well together too (e.g. www.asp.net aggregating up Channel 9 media content as opposed to hosting there own). This will take time, but we're working on it. Its probably one of the more common complaints I here about our community strategy at Microsoft.

I think it looks cool. My only request is you make it work right when viewing in Firefox on my TV. Load the site up on a big screen there at Microsoft and increase the font size so its readable when you're sitting in a leather armchair 6 feet away or so, and you'll see how the current site looks pretty bad.

If you won't make it work on a hdtv, then maybe add more user information and metadata into the XML feeds so I can build a WPF media center plugin for surfing the site. How about a web services API for site interaction so a custom front end can be made?

Random thought. Have you considered changing the text darkness and/or size based off the user publishing the data?

If you messed with the size it would give more landscape to play with, and would be easier to spot more reputable people.

Ex: I never post so I would show up with text size 1, while I am sure who ever reads this does more than me, so they would end up with a 2 or greater.

Both approaches have their draw backs considering preloading with size especially and not helping with landscape in a black to white color spectrium.

Summary, changing the appearence of replies would definately help in the world of scanning users...

Yup, it has to do with the fonts being a specific size. Adam will have this fixed in the next version.

This will be fixed. The RSS feed will be sorted by post date descending order and that's it. The way an RSS feed should be. See Jeff's post above for the way to get it to do that today.

I don't think we'll do that because just because someone's never posted before, doesn't mean they don't have something worth reading any less than someone who's been around for a long time.

That said, something that wasn't in the screenshots that we're going to do is read/unread status. Entries that you've already "read" will show up with a gray title bar (that actually IS in the screenshot) with their text summarized (the first paragraph's worth) and unread entries will have the orange title bar with all their text showing. So hopefully that will help with readability. Help you keep track of where you are. We have some other goodies like that lined up to help make reading/keeping track of comments easier.

The idea of unifying the communities is great. At least the idea of having one login for all of them... It would be also great to have a starting point (could be channel9) which shows a list of all other communities - or each community has a page with all other communities... That would be wonderful.

It will be a simple strip across the top of the sites (via a javascript include) that has a drop down to the left that includes a list of communities. On the right of the strip it will randomnly aggregate links to content from those sites. It will be subtle and won't have any other navigation and we will not use it for advertising. It would be impossible to enforce a global navigation on these sites, but a simple strip like this should serve to be helpful.

As far as unifying logins www.asp.net, www.iis.net and www.netfx3.com now have unified logins.

We need t work out a few more details on the strip, but hope to have it online within a couple of weeks.

The Xbox tag was vulnerable. I thought this field was vulnerable because on another instance when I was reporting a previous XSS exploit to them, a member on the C9 team said that the bio field used to be vulnerable. I then reasoned that since the bio field is a custom field modded by Charles when he was coding C9 initially, and that since the Xbox field is also another custom feature, they may have made the same mistake of not html encoding

Great to hear from you. We now actually hve a full dev team which includes Duncan, Sampy and Erik. They have been instrumental in this release. Adam deserves the credit for the pretty pictures. I just came up with rough ideas of potential functionalilty and look/feel (I have a few more that will not make this release, but will appear at some point....)

Adam took it and ran to the endzone... The dev team will actually make it real.

And, of course, all of this is in direct repsonse to Niner requests (plus a few extra cherries on top...).

I interpreted Reply To Post as meaning your post was given one of those little header thingies that says 'In response to post #2' which is a linky up to the original - I could be wrong though.

If this is how it will work, then the Flat View does indeed live. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Yep, it was just a misunderstanding, Flat is still very Flat we're just trying to add a bit of context if you want it. Threaded will be threaded but won't be available right away, we're going to improve upon flat first.

The link you provided gives me the same results. It's being sorted by the last reply, not the thread's creation.

Totally agree. That's definitely broken, but I think you might be subscribing to a feed sorted by last post.

Absolutely, I love what you're doing.

Keeping it flat and adding that context is great, I honestly don't think there was a better way to go about it.

You are right, the feed link you see on the site and the one Jeff has provided are sorted by Last Post... So why doesn't Jeff notice the wrong sort?

In IE7 it shows them by thread created date so Jeff is seeing the right order, even though the underlying XML is in the wrong order.

(note the change of SortBy to 6, which is Thread Created Date in our system)

For those of you who view that feed in IE7, you won't really see any change between it and the sortby=0 one, but trust me... it is in a different order
