Vista is Windows Me's old brother

Just downloaded the official version from MSDN now, and all my fears had become true.

Windows Vista sux.

UAC is just the most stupid thing that I ever saw in a OS.

Hello, Microsoft, don't you know that after some time, users will start clicking the "Continue" button automatically? Whithout even reading the message?
And when that happens UAC will be just another anoying useless feature of Vista....

Windows 98: 16mb of mem usage. Windows 2000: 60mb of mem. Windows XP: 100 meg. Windows Vista: 800 mb. Hello?!

800 mb upon cold boot? 1gb after a minute of usage?
Are you guys insane? I got 2gb of 667mhz memory on my laptop, and I can't play Battlefield 2142 due to "low memory" error messages.

I can't even start a descent VM with vista sucking up 1gb of RAM.


And the aero fliker effects? I got a nVidia 7900 GS, that it's just the best laptop card out there, and guess what happens when I minimize or maximize the IE window? FLICKER! It flicks! Flash and flicks! Arrghhh... And the blue pixel of death around every in focus Window?

Experience: Select the pink theme. Now focus a window. See the awful blue pixel of death on the bottom and right side? Now that's a clean and nice design.


Do you guys guess the size of a Vista icon? 256 pixels, nice isnt it? Well, that would be nice if ALL of system DLLs have the same version of the same huge icon over and over again! I think that I know who's using cached and system memory....


Oh, and Ready Bost? Just got my first Vista RTM blue screen of death! Why? "Hardware Error - Memory Parity Check". OMG, do you guys do parity check on a $10 SD card?!


I'll start praying today. If longhorn server sucks 1gb of RAM upon boot we're doomed.

It's been said before, and it'll be said again USING (nearly) ALL YOUR MEMORY IS A GOOD THING!

It's loading apps / dlls all sorts into memory so that they're available faster which is why it sucks up all your RAM.

So it's loading a 250mb exe file just to cache it? I have to use my hard drive!



So, i cold boot vista and start Media Center. I just want to watch TV! And it's SLOW! The sound of the TV lost sync with the image!!!

WHY? Because Vista it's using the god damn HD to cache Powerpoint!

And don't tell me that the feature it's smart enought to know when the HD is idle becaust it's not!

Just run task manager and HD watch and you'll see that's not.

I agree, but if it is *supposed* to allocate all of your memory, shouldn't it use all 2Gb if he has it available? Or is 800Mb the amount of space needed once all loaded into memory (I assume it doesn't do this on low-mem machines).

UAC: I have been worried about that but came to this conclusion:


most users get a pre-loaded pc.

UAC comes up in two areas:  installing a new app, doing an admin task.

now for most folks installing will happen from time to time but not every day, so most folks should not see that very often.

control panel access is more common but even then ... how often?

for the "average joe" that is...

see the c9 video on UAC that was posted just a few days back for more info on how an admin can tweak it.

but also recall why it is there....


say you ran winxp and a web site put an evil active x on your box that started hacking settings.... you "Owned" in nothing flat. no messages at all.

UAC puts a new fence between the app trying to alter your pc and tries to let you say "no" - so that if some roge app tries you get messages and can ask "why is that happening?"

also IE7 and vista have a "Fence" to keep evil code from downloading and running also but that's another story.


is it "Perfect" no.

but at least give them credit for moving in the right direction.

remember -- they have to build for the broad base of users.
power users and admins and devs are a small part of the total ## of users.

That most certainly shouldn't happen. I run Vista here (not the RTM though, RC2), I can start VMs or games and despite the high initial memory usage it would always adapt when I actually start doing stuff that needs the memory.

I've also not seen high amounts of disk thrashing while using the system. At least not after a few minutes after boot.

vista's use of ram is dynamic, based on what it sees happening.

when you load a game for example it will let go of ram from disk cache to give the game more room.

it will build a map of what gets loaded and try to pre-load the bits you will need.  that map will change as you use the system.
also if you just loaded vista as an upgrade it may be trying to do file indexing also....

I'd say:

1) what are the system specs ?
2) what is the vista perf numbers ( like 4.1 overall or ??)
3) is this an upgrade or a clean load?
4) after running a while is it still slow ?
5) check on drivers - many are still not "final"

and hey, relax, you are on the front line loading vista today...
if you find a problem report it to MSFT but do not be all in a bunch....

for example what if your hardware drivers have a bug ? not MSFT's fault - might be a hardware mfg problem.

So, why don't Microsoft keep JUST it's really god move of showing the ActiveX installation bar on IE. Why they need UAC to fix a possible leak or misbehavior of an ActiveX hosted on IE?


I'm not saying that they didn't choosed the best option to release the product on time. Or that I wasn't well programmed and all.

I'm just saying that the change to fix that kind of ACL IMO need to be lower on the OS layer. Something like ACL for process Win32 API access.

UAC it's OK because I can disable it.

But I'm so concerned because I love Microsoft and it's technology, and I know that UCL flickering the screen in back and sounding a panic sound it's not the best option for the users of the world.

Why don't UAC do a smooth fade to black and sound a peaceful sound when showing it's dialog box?
