Well it's RTM, but that doesn't mean that everything is as expected. What do you think should be fixed or changed if Vista gets a Service Pack and what do you think should be changed or fixed in the successor of Vista?
I personally think that Vista is having some problems with performance. I'm having a 4.0 score but it takes sometimes very long to open an application, because the HDD is busy and I don't understand why. It's probably the search indexer, or the defender, or
outlook, or some other service that does something. It would be nice if Vista could be less resource consuming.
Another thing is the sometimes very poor (spartan) UI. Take defrag as an example. If you do a manual defrag, the UI is so poor, it just says that the operation is running and could take "from a few minutes to hours"!! This is not very useful.
Consistent UI: The UI should be changed to be consistent in all places. Not Win3.x dialogs mixed with Win9x and Win2000 and WinXP dialogs. One style of dialogs. Finally somebody should skin the whole thing! Couldn't that be a must in the next version?
Form the developers prospective I would like to get more of the controls (more then currently) that are used in the operating system. For example the search box, back/forward button (+ menu), different panes, ...
Microsoft should look also more at the .NET developers and open more and more of the OS to the .NET world.

Slow startup: You can make Task Manager show you the IO Reads/Writes that might help identify the culprit.
Bad UI:
You can't watch the disk defragger move around blocks anymore. That was hours of fun and I'll miss it. I don't remember the old time estimates ever being accurate.
My shell wishes: I want more control over the Games menu. Steam doesn't function with it at all. Steam needs to be elevated to work in Vista (and Valve doesn't support beta OSs).
I want "Downloads" to be accessible from the main start menu.
Comctl gets an unmanaged successor. -
I want File Copying, and downloading to be handled by a download manager style service, so that big file copies and downloads are done in the background and are resumable if anything goes wrong or you have to reboot.
For my media centre uses, I'd like to be able to specify that a certain screen should always be used when playing back movies full screen.
That's all for now. -

I'd like to see every version of Windows ship with a copy of VPC (integrated) as a classic environment to handle backwards compat, and the next version of Windows starting to look forwards instead of backwards - for Microsoft to be in a position where it can work on new features and remodelling of areas that are 'broken' for me is a good thing. Win16 needs to go.

I completely agree with that. It would be wonderful if old apps run in a virtual machine and that's it. That would allow MS to kick the old stuff in the trash and support it via vm and that's it. -

I did that... Problem is that it's the sum of all Vista services and Vista things running that make my computer slow and use the HDD so much. Just the complete sum of everything makes it happen. -

It's a step in the right direction to make defrag less "visible". It should be done automatically in the background, without me having to pay attention to it. -

Would it hurt if opening the defragger window would show the current defrag (that is done in the background) with a nice image of the current hard disc state? -

I was chatting with someone about this yesterday. I think this would definitely be a step in the right direction if made largely transparent to the user.

My biggest gripe: I want Explorer to STOP RANDOMLY MESSING WITH MY FOLDER LAYOUTS. I mean seriously. From Beta 2 to RTM. I can go into folders I've NEVER been in under that install and I'll get some random pick of icon size, folder type (all files, documents, music, etc), columns, etc. I have never had this problem before. The first thing I do under new OS's (including Vista) is set up all explorer windows to open in details view, sorted by type. With Vista, it *does not stick*. I can do this 1000 times, and Vista will *still* decide that random-folder-full-of-development-files would serve me best if viewed with simply a name and rating with ultra-large thumbnails.

@nwools : I've had the same problem with Vista (RTM) and I eventually found an OFF-SWITCH for the entire "auto folder type"- thing. So it's just like the old XP-explorer.
If you're still interested in this issue, contact me:

Sorry for the strange layout but I'd like to avoid spam-mails

Rebrand "Fast User Switching" to "Slow User Switching"!!!

This process takes 3-5 minutes of my PC. Design of UI for user switching also is AWFUL! Who was that moron who designed this?!?!?
Is WinXP it was "WinKey+L, choose user, enter password, done".
In vista - "WinKey+L, wait, press [switch user], wait, choose user, enter password, wait, wait, black screen, black screen, wait, wait, wait, done".
So anonying... -
-disc access / file copying / pasting
im finding lags and long wait times - especially over writting files. Its like the HD is checking somewhere..."can this user over write red.JPG?" "hmmm....who is it again?...oh the owner?... wellllllll i guess so" - then it replaces.
Also the Calculating time for copy/paste is brutal. quadruple wait time in xp
- stuff put on right in UI
i curse everytime i need to hit home or refresh. you type in addressbar top left. thats where the controls should be. for those who dont mind them -fine. make the entire ie/e uis configuarable
FTP in ie (waiting since ie4 for this promice. +i dont even want a "manager" i just want explorer to have resume - STOP calculating time to copy - and to copy and replace as fast as cuteftp / ftp explorer
Modify / type in right Sort by flyout
These always seem to be missing - i have to add them. get a folder with 100 jpgs and 2 psds. for some reason those options are not there. i also doubt ill ever use group by or stack by. this would be great if configured by user (advanced button somewhere).
* i also hate the term SORT by - im not an accountant steve.. id rather ARRANGE by
See through folder fronts
Current ones only show right side of pics (spilling out...shudder)
Startbar - unattach quick links - addressbar. you used to be able to do this
True fullscreen - with no bottom status bar (ya ya )
Spellchecker in ie (if you have Word)
Purple icons changed (or blue if you prefer) McComputer / McNetwork
Also agree with all above and most at shellrevealed re - consistancy

Yep, it's annoying. If you will see at my "Computer" folder you will see:
a full bunch of crap. A LOT of "empty" icons with no names and targets. I have no idea how and when it happened.
Also "desktop search" is extremely slow and returning huge amount of crap instead of proper results. Same as WDS3 on WinXP.
PS: RTM!!! Bloody hell...

I'd like to see a keyboard layout that's exactly like Word when it comes to special characters. United States (International) doesn't work for me at all, where you have to type [shift]+[quote] [space] for a double quote, and [shift]+[quote] [e] for ë. This defaults the special case (the e-umlaut) and makes me use a key-combo for symbols that are right there on the keyboard.
In Word, a double quote is simply [shift]+[quote], and a ë is [ctrl]+[shift]+[quote] [e]. Everyday typing is much simpler that way, and key combos are only necessary for the occasional special character.
The VPC for backwards compatibility sounds like the most amazing feature ever. And not dissimilar to what happened with DirectX. Keep the old one for full backwards compatibility, and free the new one of all excess baggage. -
do you have the same problem on desktop? try to check HDDs transfer/performance on laptop and desktop (use a decent benchmark program), maybe is something wrong with your laptop HDD? maybe is not Vistalittleguru wrote:

One more litle suggestion: remove bloody Windows Firewall from Vista!
Just now I'm experiencing weird problem with this "nice feature". Suddenly WtF blocked EVERYTHING. Even apps which are allowed in exceptions. Just everything, including DNS client capabilities. I can connect to everything using IP but not names. After rebooting everything works fine (hopefully). But I'm not sure about for how long...
-
One more funny but annoying: I've lost everything from "Administrative Tools" menu. Literally! This menu contains only "Framework 1.1 configuration"
