I mentioned on a blog entry that I use KDE extensively and have been asked why. Here I give the
explanation.
While WindowMaker and Enlightenment were cool toys to play with, neither had the fit and finish of KDE, although when enlightenment gets finished it has promise. Overall, What is your favorite UNIX desktop? KDE or GNOME? No flame wars please, lets try to
have a serious non-troll UNIX discussion on this board.

Seriously, I have no opinion on that.
I just use whatever the distro provide as default.
I might have also select KDE had they didn't failed to make the menu and windows display Tradition Chinese correctly in one of the eariler version (I used KDE exclusively before that, but for the reason stated. I changed to use Gnome in that release)
Now I've become familar with both desktp environment so I don't actually care which one is installed. -
I'm occasionally running Ubuntu inside Virtual PC, and I must say I like Gnome. Especially the default theme on Ubuntu. It's orange, ORANGE I TELL YOU! Feels nice and warm. I have no experience in KDE, so don't take my opinion as that of an expert. But whenever I see screenshots of KDE and KDE apps, I have this feeling that everything looks like plastic, blue plastic. Another difference between Gnome and KDE is of course the position of the navigational elements, the dock or whatever they are called. I like the way it is in Ubuntu very much, better than in KDE, and maybe even better than in Windows.

I use Gnome, I can't set the screen resolution correctly in KDE.
I have no Windows OS on my machine for a few months now.
Cheers

I personally prefer Gnome, especially with the enhancements included in SuSE Enterprise Linux Desktop 10. I like the way the computer menu and programs list work, and their control center is wonderful: user stuff in the control center, and administrator tools separated from those in Yast.
I haven't really used KDE in a while, though. Maybe it's gotten better, but the current version of Gnome just feels better to me than the last version of KDE does to me. I'll have to check it out later. -
I used Windows XP. Has anyone on this board tried that? It rocks!

Just started up KDE for kicks, and my first impression:
"Holy crap, this is slow!"
On a 1.86 GHz Pentium M, mind you... it has no trouble with Gnome or Windows...
Hint to QT people: I shouldn't be able to see each individual control on a window draw whenever I change windows. -
KDE is a slow, bloated de. Plus it is non-free and the dual licensing goes against the GPL 3. Its pretty much dead with very few users left except for hold outs like our friend here. gnome is a much better de and beats even Windows and Mac for ease of use. For best results use gnome.

Wow, KDE is dead???? That's a huge statement to make, let's get some numbers to back that up. If KDE was dead why would there be such growth in Kubuntu? Also w/ the amount of development that is going on KDE 4 I would say it isn't dead.
