The first international conference I ever spoke at was SQL Pass, in SF and the SQL MVPs and I were invited to go over early and spend the day with Jim. This was just after Terraserver had been released and I've never seen anyone so excited about SQL in my life.

Seconded! Hopefully everything turns out well. -
This is bad news. I hope they will find him back alive and well.

I had lunch with him a few years ago, he's a great guy.
I hope everything turns out OK. -
This is unbelievable.

You want unbelievable? Look at the slashdot reaction. It's not pretty and not for the weak stomached.
Did he ever get his star map stuff off the ground? He was talking about that when I met him, and that must be 10 years ago now.

I saw that earlier and thought it was one of the most pathetic things I've seen in a long time. I don't have a good feeling about any of this anyway, and in one of the articles it mentioned something about how he was going to go and distribute his mother's ashes.blowdart wrote:You want unbelievable? The Internet seems to have a way of bringing out the coursest sides of people. Best wishes that this has a happy ending.

I pretty much left slashdot behind a few years ago. The noise/signal ratio isn't worth it anymore.
Merits to Jim and those who search him, hope they find him soon. -
Any more news, anyone?

Not looking good. Losing Jim Gray, besides the blow the his family and friends, would be an incredible loss to technology. His is one of the few that have just a bit extra besides being merely brilliant, he sees beyond tech.

thumbtacks wrote:Interesting...I was just thinking about this last night...why not try to use satellite imagery to find him?
It is a good idea. But a live satellite sweep would be very costly. -
Gray's PDA had synced with an antenna device at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Jim didn't send an email, nor did he phone home.
He may have stumbled upon people trafficking in drugs, weapons or Humans out there.
Not one word from the Department of Homeland Security. -

The SkyServer website is here:

Also Jim's MSR page:

Now we can help find him. Amazon.com has arranged it in their Mechanical Turk site, so the general public can now help scanning satellite images for Jim's boat.
You can go to http://www.mturk.com/">http://www.mturk.com, make a search for Jim Gray, login to you Amazon account and then click the Work On Hit button.
We owe him, and he is a niner too!
