Is my screen supposed to flicker so badly when switching to a UAC dialogue?
Everything else is fine, and with a 256Mb ATI card and brand new drivers I can only assume it is intentional. If so. Why?

I thought that is NVidia only (because of the buggy drivers)... Is it also with all ATI drivers?

Yes, by design. -
This is not by design. I have several machines that have a nvidia card and ATI card. I do have Media Center flicker, when I change from Windows to Full (but does not always happen)

Are you using a LCD monitor and VGA connection? Probably the monitor has problems adjusting the image, try changing the monitor settings. -
I think it's a driver issue and I've been seeing it on and off since the betas. The newest ATI drivers however seem to get rid of the problem.

It happens to me and it's rather unpleasent, especially when you're used to windows fading in and out gently. I've also noticed that one of my games will switch to a black screen for half a second while loading areas, unlike XP which never blinked.
I'm using a GeForce 7900 GS. -
They need to figure out a way to get desktop composition going under secure desktop. From what I understand it's because DWM.exe runs as the current user and therefore can't draw the secure desktop.

I never had that problem with ATI drivers (even RTM ones), I had it on some PCs with LCD monitors with analog (VGA) connections that weren't set-up correctly (using auto-adjust while the UAC dialogs were shown usually solved the problems permanently). -
I have ATI cards and I don't get what i would call flicker but it does only blit one screen at a time, so I get this intreasting effect of my left most screen diming, and the at the same time the other two go black and then in quick order it draws the other two screens one after the other. Looks a bit like a flicker rolling from left to right.

I get a split-second black screen on this Dell laptop with an ATI card and the newest drivers. Also the rectangular region surrounding the start button remains illuminated while everything else is darkened.

Try to cause "elevation" during some video playback (WMP)...

For me in WMP video playback freezes while the UAC prompt is up (sound keeps playing) and the video pics back up after the prompt is cleared.
Both quick time and PowerDVD on the other hand do not restart the video playback. Power DVD has to be paused and restarted to recover, QuickTime has to be closed and reopened. This is the same efect as doing Ctrl-Alt-Del so nothing new for me, just slightly more often! -
Vista Ultimate on an 8800GTX, I get the flickering as well, I wouldn't mind but I run it over to my Samsung HDTV aswell which also flicks like mad when UAC pops up.
Does UAC still pop up for continue then ask you again? or is that just cause I got the RTM off Connect? -
I read something about this awhile back, the video playback doesnt actually stop, basicly UAC takes a screenshot of your desktop and makes it the background in Secure Desktop.PerfectPhase wrote:For me in WMP video playback freezes while the UAC prompt is up (sound keeps playing) and the video pics back up after the prompt is cleared.
It was mentioned they did this because users seemed to get confused if they saw just a solid background color like in 2000 or XP and seeing whatever they had open behind the UAC prompt had some sort of positive usability effect or something. If you got rid of the screenshot you'd have a solid color (or maybe an Aurora) behind the UAC prompt. -
I experience the flicker on my 7900 GS, but only when I'm using dual monitors. If I'm outputting to only one of the screens the flicker isn't present.
-
Well it is well and truly p1ssing me off now. Sometimes it flickers, other times I get a black screen for about a second and I think my monitor has died.
There are somethings (like the search which is almost as fast as spotlight) that I really like about Vista, but at the moment the lack of attention to detail in some areas is really getting my goat.
