That's like saying, why can't all application be web pages and hyperlinks? Don't fear change.
There are a lot of advantages to ajaxifying (using ASP.NET AJAX) C9.
- No more viewstate. All paging, selecting, filtering, etc is all done through client controls.
- Faster/progressive page loads (see the first point)
- Better user experience. No more "page flashing" when you want to see the next set of comments, etc.

Hey... but thas what mine are. Granted, they are my first websites and hand-coded in XHTML via Homesite and Visual Web Developer (no WYSIWYG features used).
Stay toon, I'll try uploading to geocities.
Also, will the "back" and "foward" buttons still work? -

First of all, lets all welcome David back to the Channel 9 team!
David has returned to our team and is doing a heck of a lot more than just the header work as you all might suspect.
Now full-time on our team is driving/designing the overall user experience for Channels 9 + 10.
The great thing about David is that he has been part of the 9 family since the beginning. David's familiar with its roots and that will be very helpful in taking things forward.

At the moment, no. It's looking marginal on whether I'll have time to get history registering in by the beta. If not, it will definitely be in by the time we release the final version.

not sure if it fixes it - but could you then at least design in a history -1 or back button within the UI?

There are still back and forward buttons in the UI, the part that is missing at the moment is registering when you click those buttons in the history so if you hit the back button in the browser (or on your mouse) it will actually go to the previous "page" of data you were looking at. Again, this should be a non issues by RTM. -

One thing though. The site must still work when javascript is disabled. I don't mind AJAX, but always have fallback methods. -
When your doing the testing of v4, please can you test that it works on a few mobile phones, especially windows smartphones. (i do a lot of my browsing on my htc s620 so it would be useful, at the moment the site is unusable on it. Something to bear in mind with the headers and layouts) Also please consider any videos having a link for downloading to mobile windows media player. (I know there is a tradeoff with download size and image resolution... maybe have a mobile content button for it or something.)
I think in the long term you will find this beneficial as the current trends in web browsing seem to be done a lot more on mobiles than they used to be. If you need any advice on designing for mobility then I'm sure the mobile patterns and practices team will be happy to help and advise.
Many thanks
Sarah
