Can't you just sign up for them now anyway?
(Also, there is a page on the Channel 9 Wiki for GMail invites:
[Link]
).

You can only do this in the US, to my knowledge, as you have to send an SMS from US or something.

I thought you could just sign up for these now as well...
Maybe the invites are still there just as a way of easily inviting people over to Gmail. -
I signed up for one earlier (someone on another forum wanted to know how to get "@gmail.com" over "@googlemail.com").
One simply navigates to "gmail.google.com" and follows the sign up link; if I remember correctly.

Yeah, but if you're outside the USA you have to be sneaky to get "@gmail.com" instead of "@googlemail.com"; it's not difficult though, and also I think if one has "example@googlemail.com", messages from "example@gmail.com" will be sent to you.

Paying for something that is free is a little .. erm .. strange.

It probably was at the invite stage when he bought the account. Loads of people were doing it when the first GMail accounts were given out. (I luckily had a friend whose father was given one of the original GMail accounts, so I got invited
).

Thats what I did. Im glad i couldnt afford to buy one when they 1st came out - when they did 1st come out people were selling them on ebay for £200+. I picked mine up reasonably cheap around a week after this... but 2 weeks after i purchased mine you could get them for 49p!
