internet's first real..brand. cool.
either buy them - or switch everything to windows.com
msn has got to go...
-
-
I would prefer they integrate their services like they have done with messenger.
Yahows! -
ms flikr.... ms del.icio.us.. ms broadcast.com ... ms geocities (ha)
edit... *after merger...
Microsoft Flikr Photo Sharing Technologies for Windows
Microsoft del.icio.us.net
Microsoft Soapbox.broadcast.com.silverlight.windowsmediatechnologies.playsforsure.zune.net -
They'd have to be Yahoo.Live services surely? Or perhaps Mashoo!
Why is everyone looking for someone that MS should buy? I mean, they buy companies often, but why the interest? Unless you've got stock I suppose... -

Potential Threat: GO USA!
Google Dreams--Microsoft Nightmares: GO USA!

Microsoft needs a containment strategy and to open up its vault of cash.
Three companies, Rational Software, Macromedia, and YouTube were bought by major competitors, IBM, Adobe and Google.Microsoft Merger Memories--The Way We Were

If Yahoo is in play, then Google can go after Yahoo as well as other companies. A bidding war may breakout.
I would prefer Yahoo remain a separate company and competitor to both Google and Microsoft.
The term sheet and in particular price will determine whether this merger happens.
I think not, unless they have someone new running their M&A department and Microsoft is willing to pay top dollar.

If Microsoft can't build a world class search engine then they ought to get out of the game.
What does this do for the confidence of the Live Search Team?
The assumption that the combined MSN/Yahoo would equall the combined sum of their users is dead wrong. I use Yahoo and MSN....
Yahoo and Microsoft have very different cultures, if this acquisition went through the best and brightest of Yahoo would take a short freeway trip to Google.
-
Yahoo is much more than just search, they also have a number of other areas that would surely make MSFT happy to acquire.

flickr!
My single favourite website, (aside from C9, natch.)
I wonder if soapbox and flickr could be merged so they shared the same community... Instant awesomeness! -
hmm what about this stuff:
With an eye toward its bottom line, Yahoo has decided to jettison its own proprietary scripting language in favor of the open-source alternative PHP.

and
Yahoo! User Interface LibraryThe Yahoo! User Interface (YUI) Library is a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications using techniques such as DOM scripting, DHTML and AJAX. The YUI Library also includes several core CSS resources. All components in the YUI Library have been released as open source under a BSD license and are free for all uses.

I say BUY!
I would love it if Yahoo was acquired by Microsoft. Yahoo has been frustrating me more and more lately.
I wonder if Microsoft has any plans to do publisher-advertising like Yahoo and Google have been doing. This is apparently a very popular thing lately, and it must have come up in MS-conversations at one time or another.
Yahoo is doing a poor job with the publisher-advertisements lately, and it would be nice to see if Microsoft could fix up their errors. -
A buy like that could actually hurt Microsoft.
$50 billion for Yahoo?
Does Microsoft even have that in reserves? -

That and more, but they'd never just outright buy it. They'd pay part in money and part in stock.

On the PHP issue post above:
From Mix:
BD002 - Partying with PHP (...and the Microsoft Platform)
Learn how to spice up PHP using the unique features of the Microsoft platform. PHP is the center of attention as you learn to build and run a PHP application on Microsoft Internet Information Services 7, and also mingle with the Microsoft AJAX library.

just out of curiosity....
ok say yahoo is 30 billion to 50 billion to buy
what if MS just took that money - and bought google shares?
first - is it possible?
second - the founders of google have some clause about takeovers - i forgot what but i think it was specifically geared toword an ms takeover
was just thinking the money might be better spent remving the google "good guy" image- as ms would become the largest shareholder = kill yahoo - team with google

I don't hold any google shares, so I haven't seen the filings, but my guess is that the google founders own a majority share such that MSFT couldn't actually buy enough to 'control' them.
-
plus they have weird share auctions/invites type things.. most likely to thwart being owned too much by any single company
-
So they're going to port all of that PHP/FreeBSD/MySQL/Postgres Code to Microsoft stuff?
