I've been thinking about this and have been inspired by my wife by something she does on one of her forums. We, the Niners, need a new way to deal with trolls. Just "not replying" doesn't do the trick, because SOMEONE falls for the trap (and then there's
nothing that the rest of us can do).
However, this is going to change...
HERE'S THE NEW NINER-STYLE STRATEGY FOR DEALING WITH TROLLS:
When there is a trolling post, reply talking about food. All of us, talking about food. Yeah, a thread might be derailed, but we're not going to let the trolls win. And dog-gone-it, we are going to have fun in the meantime.
The type of food doesn't matter. Here are some thoughts to get you started: cake, cookies, muffins, toast, popcorn, cheeses, pasta, pizza, crackers, etc.
So, with that said, go forth and conquer the trolls my friends. And have fun with your fellow Niners while doing so. From this day on, we shall Conquer With Cuisine.

It won't work. This is a slightly more friendly way of doing what rjdohnert tried by spamming threads with wikipedia and song lyrics. The problem is that 9ers love fighting about Linux vs Windows. It isn't even a point of free vs proprietary software, because I have posted rebuttal against certain ideas I think are wrong, and have gotten some useful and intelligent debate in return before the thread dies. But the thread does die because useful discussion is not what 9ers love. 9ers love to fight and 1up other other guy no matter what, and Linux is the first and best topic with which to feed that passion.
