I predict that Linux will continue to suffer a minimalistic user base until someone releases a distro with:
- Good OOBE experience
- Native support for Windows apps (no emulation)
- Significant, or even noticable, support from Game developers

XP has been long enough to garner respect and support from a great deal of the world as a whole. It will be around long after 2009.

Around 2008 (it pains me to say) Vista will have the most significant market penetration, followed by Vienna, Singularity, and whatever Microsoft does next.

You wanna troll Windows? Go do it on an anti-Windows forum. Nobody likes you here.

If ignorance is bliss you must be the happiest guy in Imbecilia.

You know, I think you need a better way to attract attention to your cause, maybe a nice cardboard sign reading:

"Thel Yearl Ofl Thel Linuxl Desktopl Isl Comingl! Inl <strike>2001</strike> <strike>
2003</strike> <strike>2005</strike> <strike>2007</strike> 2015 Youl Willl Knowl Whatl Il Knowl !!!"

Just a side note here, why don't you formulate your own opinion about something instead of regurgitating every *nix piece of literary trash you get in your gmail Inbox.

We might be following the corporate devil to oppressed code hell, but at least were not sheep following each other off a cliff.
It's the dominant religion of a small country called Ubuntu.
It's followers worship a god called StawlMarn, who, it is said, will deliver the world from the evil church of M$c$o$o$t (for that is how it is written).
Upon that most joyous of days, the worshippers of OpenSauce (praise be upon it) will rejoice and give thanks, by taking a bath and then moving out of their parent's house.
Great article and I agree 100% with the author. Microsoft cannot and willnotl survive open source. we are winning. We are dwindling their marketshare, the OSS projects put out better software. This comes from Government officials as well. I predict
in 2015 there will be no Microsoft, in 2009 OS/2 will have more marketshare than Windows.

Coffeehouse - Microsoft has nowhere to run; Developers leaving Windows desktop

I don't like the direction Microsoft is taking with their software generally, that is, in function or license. I don't think software as a product is as beneficial as software as a public utility can be for the progress of Science and the Useful Arts.
I think it is a mistake for the leaders of Microsoft to criticize free software by identifying it or its methods as something they are not, and most people who have read my recent posts in Channel 9 will recognize why I think this is so.

But I also feel that in order to effectively promote any goodwill to the technological communities of the world that I should be about the business of building or helping to build something rather then trying to tear something else down. And it isn't that
I think that Microsoft is beyond criticism, quite the opposite, many things their leadership says and does are quite questionable and it surprises me that those statements and actions are not examined more fully.

If Microsoft has grown "too big", meaning that it holds the most interest in the world and the concerns of its industry, what the rest of the world must examine, and in particular these United States of America, is where anti-trust law should be applied. It
is in the interests of society as a whole that power not consolidate in the hands of those who must never have it. So the question isn't about money specifically, although the accumulation of large quantities of wealth can aid in the accumulation of illegitimate
power and provide a shining light to the rest of us as to where some examination can and should be made.

Microsoft is a corporation whose interest is to continue to encourage other people to lend them their money to perform their business. While many people in the company are concerned with the development of its software, Microsoft
has to be about getting "their" buck because they are using other people's money to do it and those people are going to have monetary expectations. This is why the argument in quantity of wealth is almost totally irrelevant to the discussion of the
validity of a business, because it is the people of a society in which the business exists that will legitimize its existence by offering their money in investments. It is true that that is not solely what must be used to measure the validity of a business,
and an excess of wealth can be the first sign that something isn't on the up and up. And while Microsoft has been, and should continue to be, examined under the statues of anti-trust, it is not anti-trust law that will put the software industry where it belongs
in respect to the 18th century ideal for the progress of Science and the Useful Arts. Other laws will need careful examination, most notably that of copyright and patent law, which have all but ceased to support the diffusion of knowledge that they were supposed
to encourage.

the only issue I have with lawyers is that they generaly come up with more and more terms and conditions to deal with...

most of the time they are paid to make things more difficult for "the other guy" -- who that is depends on who pays them.

I'd much rather see a fundimental re-working of patent and copyright that address fairness and issues like the "Bad patent"

the last few years of music / media and Digital copyright have been very bad stuff in so many ways.

if we just keep piling more layers of crud on top of crud we will have a real nightmare of laws that do not work.

simple machines tend to outlast overly complex ones.

After all everybody wants a father and mother and a set of relatives ... Microsoft is arguably the "father" (since usually fathers are richer ) , Linux is mother and all others are relatives ...

Coffeehouse - Microsoft has nowhere to run; Developers leaving Windows desktop

At this point in technology, writing an operating system kernel program that can support even one architecture of general purpose machine would be such an enormous undertaking that it is really very unlikely that a single person could do so. Even if one
were to try, it would probably involve mining existing code such as Linux or BSD for ideas anyway, since Microsoft's code is not distributed. As that is the case, it is arguably better to contribute your new ideas to existing projects instead.

The only case where I think writing entirely new software would be universally beneficial for all of society would be if a new operating system kernel program was written with a more advanced design in mind then is currently available. Object-oriented micro-kernel
technology pushes as much functionality from kernel space to user space as possible. Most of the operating system's kernel functions are contained in object modules that can crash or be replaced and modified with low system impact.

Yes it's a waste of time because it focuses on something that the vast majority do not (and will not) ever give a hoot about.

When was the last time you saw a software company market its product by waving its licence in consumers faces? It's like trying to sell a car on the strength of its engine serial number.

If you want to promote GPLv3, then time would be better spent actually writing software that can match MS and Apple in terms of usability and utility; then you will find it much easier to force your ideals on people.

No, the logo says 'GPLv3' - which kind of sums up the whole problem with open source thinking today. Rather than building the software for the people, they build it for themselves and then try to force people to become geeks so they can run it. A few days ago,
someone here was arguing that things would be so much better once Mom and Pop got the hang of using version control software so that they could maintain their own source repositories.

Mmmm ... no and no.

The only validation I am seeing is the usual license key stuff that companies pop up when the demo has expired. Not seeing anything on the XP box either. One validation, and that has been it. I imagine it is carrying out some validation thing in the background,
but we're not aware of it here.

jamie wrote:

The huge majority do not care about DRM, they just want to stick the disk in the machine and just go. If you tell that they have to go chase down another piece of software, then they just won't bother. Since having DRM installed on the machine does not affect
non-DRM disks in any way, then there is nothing to be gained by not having it installed. You are still free to play non-DRM disks.

jamie wrote:

... as I said, I have not seen this multiple validation thing on any of the boxes at home or at work.

But that is your choice. With Apple, you don't really get one. You put up with their outdated, limited-option and

suspect quality hardware or you don't.

I'm sorry but did you see the last WWDC keynote? Leopard certainly isn't the revolution that Jobs had been gassing on about for months. What was that 'hidden feature' by the way? In fact, over the five years that Apple has been charging for relatively minor
changes to their operating system, I could actually have bought Vista Ultimate and seen a lot more additions to the OS

I seen the "Microsoft hating" back in 1995, I actually been one of these morons. ALL so called "Open source coders" ( back then we called them code rippers since they didn't write their own code and stole it from others ) that I known, all the Linux h4x0r guys
I known, they were and are all out of jobs. No money, no life, no nothing. and the ones I know STILL go around saying it should all be free!!! haha... So anyhow back then the little brainy started thinking. I started coding on Windows and oh boy, how I fell

Coffeehouse - Microsoft has nowhere to run; Developers leaving Windows desktop

OK, I'm having difficulty in figuring out whether to decide this thread is troll-spawn and release "thar kitti3z", or whether you're actually having a serious debate.

Regardless, it's ridiculous to pretend that Microsoft are going to disappear, overnight or otherwise. IBM are still here, so why would MS vanish? It's not going to happen, ever (well, ok, so everything disappears eventually, but my point is that if MS vanish,
it'll be through a slow degradation of profitability, and a failure to adapt to a changing market and as such take many many many years.)

What was that? Have you actually seen a gnome or KDE desktop lately? Or the ubuntu logo? Or the...? No? Didn't think so.
I guess because the FSF and PHP have crappy logo's it means the OSS don't have designers, right?

Actually, the problem with the logo is that it uses a swoosh similar to the Nike logo. There was a time about 10 years ago when it seemed every logo used that very swoosh and it got old very quick.

I actually think the PHP logo is nice as is the Gentoo Linux logo and the Enlightenment logo.

Just wish the stock installs of Linux distros had a little more graphic punch to them.

You're right. It does look like a sneaker logo. The "v3" swoosh after "GPL", I opine, is following the precedent of the Emacs logo art, rather then trying to be anything new. I personally like the Debian swirl, as far as free software logos go.

too bad web stats show linux not gaining marketshare and also news show
linux servers losing marketshare and
linux sales being lower than expected

did I also mention vista selling more than the global linux marketshare only in its first sales month? continue dreaming

did you also read your article? it clearly states that the increase in linux development is due to online applications: developers are moving to linux server apps development, not to linux desktop apps developmentso this has nothing to do with desktop linux.

However, since
MS is eating all of the Apache marketshare month after month don't expect this trend to last forever [6][6][6][6], it's going to reverse in a year or so. Or do you think that online apps developers will still target linux servers when Windows Server will
soon be the dominant platform?

What a truely awful article. Misleading headline; bad graphs. It talks about venture capital without really a nod to open source at all, nor a comparision with closed source ventures which would be necessary to make a useful conclusion.

Plus, lets be honest, most of these ventures just *use* open source, they aren't open source themselves.
