No shell32 folder on my XP system. Perhaps you're thinking of system32?

PS: notepad.exe is in both c:\Windows, and c:\Windows\System32

Still can't find it, but give me a minute..

Ok, I've got it, but I was trying to find the on screen keyboard - used to be called OSK.exe in XP, can't find it in vista. I didn't think to just check c:\Windows, where I found most of what I wanted. OSK wasn't there though, so... Just need to check something else. I'm sure there used to be a Shell folder somewhere in WINDOWS directories, but maybe I was wrong

I am pretty sure a System32\shell32 folder never existed... what are you expecting to find in it?

osk.exe, notepad.exe, calc.exe....

Found it. It would appear I was delirious. C:\Windows\System32

All the shells are in that directory.

Shells? is this the right way to describe what your after? what are you actually after?

To me, the shell is the interface around the kernel, which describes the base level of interaction the kernel has with a 'user'.

*sigh*. Microsoft gets jip from Linux et. al because of Microsoft's bad prior record on people installing viruses for them, but every time Microsoft comes up with a way of combatting user virus-installing stupidity someone comes along with a way of turning off all security settings.

Oh come on. I'm hardly dumb, I just want ultimate control over my computer. I want to access whatever I want, whenever I want. I didn't have UAC in XP, never seemed to make a difference. Everything else is up and running, AVG is fine, etc. Fine, UAC could prevent them from getting in itfp, but it's not like I'm going to download a virus, I hardly ever download anything now that I'm happy with my system.

Perhaps this could be constreued as ignorant; thinking I'll be safe from virii by not downloading stuff. I'm not thinking that though, I'm just saying there's less of a risk now.

Then turn UAC back on.

I see UAC only when doing adminstrative level tasks, and programs that think they need admin permissions that don't are defective.

By turning off UAC you are encouraging developers to write bad code as well as opening up your computer to all sorts of nasties that might appear on your computer, say by infected JPEGs in IE, a hacked program on your system or a badly coded and therefore hackable program that you rely on for internet access.

Oh, I understand, but I also understand that we are not average users; average users don't want to get into system folders; avarage users log on, surf the web, do whatever they need to do.

IMO, almost everyone here is rather past "average" user.
