Some of you may have noticed that I went missing for a few weeks. Coworkers sent links to threads and messages in which you pondered my disappearance.

It's all pretty simple. I had what I think was a nervous breakdown. I had always wondered what the term meant. I guess it's one of those things that you can't define until you've had one.

Since then, I've been diagnosed (for the fifth time) as being bipolar. I always ignored this diagnosis because I didn't want it to be true.

However, on the right meds (lithium and lamictal), I've come around a bit. Feeling much more stable than I think I've ever felt. No drugs in my system. Quitting one antidepressant that I don't need. After that, it'll just be the bipolar meds.

I'm now coming back to Microsoft on a partial medical leave of absence. That's the long version of "I'm going to work four hours a day until I'm not as crazy."

I feel like I'm starting over entirely. I've sort of forgotten how to do my job, and I almost went into the women's restroom today. It was the pink tile work that saved me from going any farther than the doorway.

So. Yeah.

That's where I've been.

I think it's good to be back, but it's too early to tell. I'm cautiously optimistic about things around here, but it might be that corporate life isn't for me (not this team specifically - these are the best people I've ever worked with).

OK. That's about it.

First of all, first always (and by always I mean always) look at how you are! I know you knew that, but I just wanted to be sure, you knew it Wink

Next look how you like work. Don't overdo it in the beginning... as you said 4 hours - I think that's quite enough to start with.

Always keep some time for yourself to relax and enjoy nature, if you can and if you enjoy that. If not get something else you enjoy and do that - like me doing lumber work - well until a few months I didn't even know I liked it, but since I did it, I like it... I guess you get the point.

Relax, take it easy and take your medicine Smiley Did you ever try homeopathic stuff? Not the very low doses, but the higher one? I have heard from people that they help with all kinds of things...

And last but not least: great to have you back! Give us, nervous nerds, some videos about some other geeks that work at Microsoft. But don't overdo it and look at how you are first - well you know...

Btw. since you left some of the trolls have also left. It's gone better now here on C9. I guess that might also help you to avoid another nervous breakdown! (saves me and, I'm sure, some others some nervs too)

A guy I know who used to run Alpha Courses (i.e. he'd convert people to Christianity) but is now an atheist told me that one of the reasons he quit was that he'd convert people who had a problem. That would work out for a while until something happened and they fell back into their old habits. e.g. An alcoholic becomes tee-total for a while after "finding god" but for what ever reason falls off the wagon. This time round they fall much harder than they did before. Because this time they hate themselves for what ever it is they don't want to be doing, but this time round god hates them too.

He realised that what was getting people out of their hole was personal will power. It was nothing to do with supernatural beings living in the sky. Yes, people occasionally failed, but when they failed "with God" they got in much worse mess than they were in before. When they failed and it was just them they weren't burdened with the additional distress of having disappointed some mythical bearded guy which they had taken to be real.

So, in short, finding god is probably the worst solution to any problem.

That's assuming everybody thinks exactly the same way. Kind of a simplistic way of reasoning, if you ask me.

Uh...the Alpha Courses have a few well known "issues", and one of their notable downfalls is that they tend to get people "hooked on an experience" rather than sticking to what the Bible says. In some cases, they can actually make things worse. And although I can't speak for the other poster, I would argue that medicine does have its place...and in some cases it is needed. But yeah, not dealing with people's underlying problems is not good either...oh and then there is this rather sobering passage...which seems to address things such as false conversions. But it's not a person's job to force somebody else to convert.

The best thing I can say is don't fight it, medical professionals are scientists at heart, they deal with facts and truth not hearsay and innuendo, to get the best out of them is by giving them more facts about what is happening to you so they can better discover how to treat you.

Yes mate, you are going to have to give up a certain amount of control and trust which isn't easy when you're a coder control freak like me! However it is cathartic in the truest sense of the word.

I left yesterday after posting that first bit, and I come back to over forty comments including:

1. A friendly attempt at religious conversion to solve my problems.

2. A friendly suggestion that I steer clear of friendly attempts at religious conversion.

3. A friendly, but creepy, photoshopping of my visage into Welcome Back Kotter. (For the record, I've been sent plenty of photoshopped things involving my face, and, regardless of subject matter or context, it always gives me the heebie-jeebies (still funny - I just mean to say that it's a scary kind of funny)).

4. A friendly suggestion that a member of our community learn Photoshop compositing. I'll be reading up on that myself.

I'll try to cover it all here:

1. I have no intention whatsoever of going after any god for any help. Furthermore, I consider this a private matter, and if anyone would like to engage in discourse on the subject, I'll happily rock you like a hurricane.

I have enough screwed up stuff going on upstairs as it is. What I need is what I've avoided, which is what I'm finally getting:

Meds for the proper condition rather than meds to aggravate it.

Also, while I understand that you mean well in bringing up the god thing, ask yourself what it would be like if I found you in the middle of a problem and suggested that you leave your god.

2. I'm right there with you on the let's-not-solve-this-with-a-god thing. Don't worry - I was raised Episcopalian, and while I enjoyed chapel (the singing, mainly), I was never able to believe what I was hearing. The main reason the Bible is useful to me today is that there are so many literary allusions to the thing that I couldn't understand what, for example, my favorite poets were talking about. So much is gibberish until you connect it to some bit of the Bible. So, as literature, I'm down. As a book that represents the divinely inspired word of God... no thanks.

3. It's good to be back. I'm horrified that you stuck me so close to John Travolta, but at least I'm in there somewhere. It feels like I'm part of something... something greater. Specifically, Welcome Back Kotter.

4. As interested as I am in Photoshop compositing, I think that the extremely low level of skill that went into the image is still passable by the (also extremely low level of) standards of any given online forum.

Try turning the money around. It might just be going in the wrong way.

It sounds like you've spent more time with it than many "Christians" do...and that's impressive. Having read it cover to cover (and doing so again) I do have to say it is one of the most coherent books I've ever seen...considering that it spans many centuries, and came through multiple authors, I really can't compare it to anything else. I guess I've always been of the camp where it really is the word of God, given to us through various authors over time. There are some passages, however, which are literally the "word of God"...i.e. when Jesus was speaking, or prophecy coming through old Testament prophets.

In some respects I think we actually going backwards!

Not so long ago the Sciences were the popular subjects, using reason, fact and logic was helping us to discover how truly amazing our universe is.

How did we become so skeptical? When did we decide that personal truth was more important than scientific truth?

I know that many religions are growing and our belief in 'new-age' beliefs is also on the increase. I find this alarming!

I respect anyones belief's it's important that their rights are upheld but we need to look at how we are educating ourselves and our children in a balanced and truthful way, teaching all religions and sciences, not one version of a 'truth' and I can say this with full conviction being a Christian for so many years. I didn't just read the bible I used to teach it in Sunday school, on reflection I should have also been teaching the children about other faiths and science so when they were older enough they could choose, I feel now that I was letting those children down by merely in-doctoring them.

I can't say I do. I give the main religions the benefit of "reasonable doubt", the rest I dismiss and honestly don't believe in "equal rights" for. I'm all for equality, but not with religion.

Scientology is the reason I'm against absolute religious freedom, and to a lesser extent new-age people.

I sometimes think there is too much techno-stuff in our lives.  For myself, I need to step away from the computer in moderation and see what else this life has to offer.  I'm sure most people here feel the same way, but I can't help but wonder if too much techno-stuff acts as a catalyst for a whole host of personal problems.  Brain synapses find a strong pattern of firing and won't let go...that sort of thing...

Anywho, nice to see your shining avatar around again.  Hope you're feeling better each day.

Define what you mean by "going backwards". Are these people "backwards"?

Gregor Mendel, Isaac Newton, William Herschel, Blaise Pascal, Lord Kelvin, Michael Faraday, and Galileo? Let's see...that covers some major figures in genetics, physics, astronomy, math, science, and electricity. Since when was science and Christianity mutually exclusive?

Wow, I didn't know that. I have great respect for people's beliefs, too, by the way. But to say that Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions all lead to the same path is incorrect...because they all have very different concepts of God, spirituality, the afterlife, etc.

when C9 opened,  they had "customer/platform evangelist" scoble. 
he blogged - quite publicly about ms or which ever.

you are such a great writer, personality, and all round tech guy - do you think your napleon blog (ranks quite high on itunes if i remember = mac users) would start to have more ms related content on it?

you are quite witty - and the napoleon site is more of a "diary" now (as you said before)

Im just wondering if there will ever be an extention of C9 - like scoble provided - that you could so totally do better - but it maybe doesnt seem like its in the cards anymore?  (ie videos, the od troll fighting on c9 and napoleon)

i think if anyone could get out there and speak about the possitive stuff coming out at ms - it would be you

I'm not trying to turn this into a flamewar. I'm trying to suggest to you (and him, really) what actually works.Whether or not you believe in that is still up to you of course. But I wouldn't be telling him if I hadn't gone through some similar issues myself (sans medication, but still had the issues). It goes way beyond philosophies, intellectual arguments, debates and all that. But fine, I'll leave this thread and leave you to your own devices. Don't get me wrong! If this discussion remains serious, it's OK for everyone... but we had so many flamewars on stuff that is just believe and nobody can proof it - which makes it also that everybody has a slightly other opinion about that topics and turns out to be a bashing and fighting asap (usually).

Hard to decide what's worse.... anti-vaxxers or scientologist anti-psychiatrists.

I guess in a utilitarian sense the anti-vaxxers since people die os easily preventable conditions as a result of their actions, despite that they are well-meaning; whereas the anti-psychiatrists are just sinister and full of malice.
