So I guess it's a good thing that the warranty got pushed out to 3 years, huh...
That doesn't take care of the bummer factor, and the loss of use while it's getting fixed, but hey, at least it's covered, right? -

yes it's covered however my previous 360 broke about a month ago and came back something like 20 days later... during this week I managed to play with the new one just a few hours and it already broke (and the new one is supposed to mount an additional heatsink) ... unbelievable [C]

I feel your pain, I sent mine back about two weeks ago and I called them today and they send tend of the month!!!!!!

When mine went down, I just organized Wii events that required numerous players and the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Since, I tend to only enjoy 1 player games on the 360, it was a nice change-up.
Then again, that plan requires you also have Wii. -

I've tried the towel trick and now the console starts however most of the times it boots it freezes immediately during the logo sequence or in the dashboard and also it freezes very often while playing games making them unplayable. I sense a coffin coming

I tried the towel trick on an XBox 1 a year or so ago that kept f&^cking up and it worked. Im glad to see its forward compatible.

So did you get the new heatsink when you got it back a month ago? Apparently that was supposed to solve all the problems.

Its really amazing that the Xbox 360 came to fame with this kind of track record and getting the games. My friend just got an Elite; I hope he'll be saved from the agany.
Did the original Xbox have even 1/4 the problems? My original Xbox still works and we got it in 2002.
Sony done something right with the PS3, even if their system turned out less than expected. Too bad the PS3 has fewer spectacular game releases in the near future. -

all the 360s repaired in the last 2 months are supposed to have the new heatsink so it's very likely that my 360 had it since it came back about a week ago though it doesn't seem to have helped. maybe they didn't apply it correctly.

he won't because the elite doesn't have the new heatsink or the cooler CPUs/GPUs.

the original xbox was rock solid, they had only a recall of certain power cords however I don't remember the console itself having any widespread problem. my xbox fell to the floor dozen of times due to cats/dogs running in the controller cord and it still works perfectly.

Sony produced all sort of hardware for years so their construction methods are far more advanced than Microsoft's (just look at the PS3's PSU fitting inside the console case or at the amazing cooling system they used) and also delayed the PS3 launch by almost 1 year and half so they had all the time to make sure the console was flawless.
The PS2 instead had all sort of problems especially with the very fragile DVD drives that nowadays still break very often.

At least the DVD's didn't get scratched when you changed the console's position from vertical to horizontal. -
I'm not going to defend MSFT on this one, but it's an unfortunate byproduct of moores law and consumer demand. We're all used to the size of previous consoles, but you could probably have piled a 3-inch thick quilt on top of most of them and gotten away with it.
It's too bad that we can't somehow capture all that excess heat and store it away for winter time

Or, MS just doesn't know how to make cheap, fast consoles

the first 360 was scratching discs while staying vertical (it wasn't ever moved) and scratched the first game I bought (PGR, however I told the shop the disc was already scratched and they refunded me [6]). fortunately discs didn't get scratched when the console was horizontal so I didn't send it back to MS.

Possibly, but I'll bet that if you open up the case on a 360 and put the guts into a bigger case and get some air flowing over those monsterous heatsinks, you'd end the problem.
But then, nobody wants a 360 that's the size of a PC (which is basically what a 360 is). -
Doesnt the Xbox 360 already have liquid cooling and a large heat sink over the GPU?

no, that was a 360 mod that was linked on slashdot a while ago. Unless you meant a metaphoric xbox 360 cooled by users' tears [6].
