So today's the day I got my AS results from the 1st year of 6th Form (technically it's my third, as many of you know I had a few major cockups the first time round).
Overall, I'm pleased; for those wanting the figures:
Mathematics {
C1: A
C2: A
C3: A
C4: E (oops!)
S1: B
M1: A
}
Physics {
PHY1: A
PHY2: A
PHY3: C
}
Critical Thinking {
CT1: B
CT2: B
}
General Studies {
A: 100%
B: 100%
C: 100%
}
Would someone please like to explain how I scored 100% on all three modules of GS? Is that even
possible?
I did 6 modules in Maths in the first year since I'm doing Further Maths, I was originally planning on resitting C3 in January, but that won't be necessary (miraculously), I was expecting a C or D in C4, not an E; but I was going to resit it anyway.
PHY3 I cocked up because of the Physical practical part, I did well on the written part.
Discuss. Old fogies are encouraged to rant about how high standards were in "their day".

So what is 'General Studies'? Didn't have it when I was at school. If you can get 100% if sounds like a bit of a Noddy subject. Did you think it was worth it, or just a waste of time?
And 'Critical Thinking'? Isn't that just making disparaging remarks about people? I'd have thought you'd be an A student, if that was the case
Maths and Physics, eh? Geek.

Nice to see some countries still grade their students with the A-F system. I think that's what I'm seeing with your scores there.

Isn't it something to do with it being a cop-out subject with no real meaning that exists solely to prevent the whiny spoilt little children we have these days from being told they're a miserable failure at everything?
Or something.

Tch! Youth of today. Don't know they're born. Exams in my day meant something. And to get to them was uphill, in both directions, in the snow. This was all fields y'know.... -
Seriously, what is Critical Thinking? Is it philosophy?
Plus, what's involved in General Studies, I didn't do A-Levels so I never did it, and all my brother would say is that it involved essays.
Also, in my day, we didn't get to do wimpy modules, we just had one huge sodding exam at the end. (My day was 1998
)
Anyway, congrats and stuff. -

Actually, we go A, B, C, D, E, U. There's no "A+" or "F" grades. But a "U" is "Unclassified" and essentially a fail.

I was listening to radio 4 this morning and some teenager was bemoaning the fact that to study law she needed 3 As, or 2 As and a B, but she just knew she'd perform in the court room.
*sigh* -

Not enough discipline for a real exam

Massif wrote:Seriously, what is Critical Thinking? Is it philosophy?
It's more like "Applied philosophy" with emphasis on debating skills (formulating and rebutting arguments) and analysis of sources (credibility, etc). I can say I got a lot out of it but I never took it as a serious subject, I'm really in it for Further Maths and Physics.

Cool, we had to do "Theory of Knowledge" which was essentially epistemology.
I hated the teaching, but loved the subject. -
I got ABB at A level (A in history (100% in all modules!)) to do computer science at Durham

Good luck next year -

Bah! Ridiculous nonsense! English, Maths and the three Sciences! Those are real subjects. Never did me any harm! Not directly, at least. There was that one time with the flamethrower, though ...

Knickers to you! I also did Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Psychology, Italian and English. (And 150 hours of community service... Seriously... See: http://www.ibo.org/diploma/) -
I just noticed: The URL for the post ends 666.

Really? The fact that those sort of skills aren't part of every a-level is rather worrying. Basic skills I would have thought. You may as well have an a-level in essay writing.

I belive it was originally part of General Studies, which everyone does.
GS is less about serious debate but more about an exercise in relativatism "no answer is wrong, folks!".

Dear lord. And yet we're told it's not getting easier.

Well, see the past-papers for yourself.
