Nice!
I wish I had a really fast Internet connection. I remember when I was at a university for my work experience the Internet connection was 1Gbps both ways (obviously one could not take advantage of the whole thing [maybe at an odd hour, but when I was there other people were using computers around the university]). It was really cool because I remember when people asked you to download some application (I remember one time I had to get some Spyware removal software) it took only a few seconds to complete.
Have fun with the new connection.

the cool part is the cost will be be pretty much the same
rogers has "bundles" where in each service you use = 15% off
before we had digital cable tv, and cell with them - but phone with bell and internet at teksavvy
by going all Rogers - we are paying the same - but getting 18meg internet
18 meg...droooooool......
*i also finally ordered my phone with cybershot 3 meg camera - and got a 200$ off coupon for an Xbox
oh nos! -
I get 24Mb at home, and 2Gb at work, so it's nearly always everyone else's fault if my downloads are slow

So these speeds are apparently impressive in the US?

Are you on the continent in Europe? (One can get amazing speeds there).

Jamie I hope you know that there is a download limit of 100GB in rogers. Also they block torrents (just in case you use them)
EDIT: For this plan the limit seems to be 90GB -

Yes, Denmark. I'm only on 8/1 Mb right now, but fibercables have been dug down in the city for a while now, and between my city and another city, so it can't be too long before it starts to become normal with 100 Mb symmetric, and I'm hoping within few years we'll get gigabit speeds.
I can get 25 Mb fairly cheap and many people are already above that, but I'm on "economy class" for now. Power companies are investing in fiberoptic lines.
It's going to be nice to have a more decentralized net. Currently the (formerly state owned monopoly) telco owns the copper-based network, but with fiberoptic lines being installed by power companies, it looks like the ownership structure will be decentralized.

i dont know of anyone going above 8 meg residential in toronto (till this service - or really expensive business accounts) At least from the people I know -

True, I'm in Germany in a town near a city with an university and could get a real fast connection.
Imagine, on vista beta it took me 52 secs for RC1 to download.

Man, the UK sucks for internet speeds. Most providers only offer up to 2Mb, and the most you can get without paying a fortune is 8Mb, and that is only if your house is built on the telephone exchange. We live about 500 yards from the main exchange in Exeter, so it isn't quite so bad, but the line drops every half hour or so, which is highly annoying.
Talktalk tried to blame the problem on the connection being "too fast", which is a load of absolute [lifted] -
I hear Rogers is notorious for packet shaping, so they could kill your Torrent or disrupt your Skype...
so that 18 meg down may only contain HTML
-
does emule use bitorrent by default? or is it its own network
(thats all i use - mainly for albums i already own)
Also re 90 gigs a month ...i dont think ive downloaded 90 gigs in 4 years let alone a month .. although with 18meg...
-
That sucks.
If you pay for a certain bandwidth, it ammounts to mislabelling "fraud" to handicap certain types of traffic - the traffic that can actually use the line the most.
But I suppose, as with everything else, you have to read the fine print that says that actually you don't have x Mb for all types of traffic, or arbitrary limits may be put upon arbitrary types of traffic, if deemed necessary and at the discretion of the telco... -

Is MaxDSL (it's not LLU as it uses the standard BT Broadband infrastructure) not offerred in your area? I'm on a 4meg line (my line is low quality as well) with Freeola (reseller of entanet) and I'm only paying £21.99. It's a decent-enough package with a static IP, free unlimited* webspace, a 30gig peak cap and 300gig off-peak cap.

In the United States, overall broadband usage is at about 33% across the country. If you look at just those people who access the Internet at home in some way, about half of them have broadband.
What's sad is not just the low overall penetration of broadband, but the fact that it also shows that growth in demand for broadband access has been slowing since 2005. It seems to be that those who want broadband, by and large, have it. It would also seem that, at least to some degree, the "digital divide" also exists as a matter of personal choice.

i remember reading something about canadians being highest per capita of broadband adopters. (i think)
Maybe that helps drive the market to bring in higher speeds
(that and rogers is really killing Bell right now... - this must be "fun" to them - even at a loss - which i doubt it is)
Edit: *as an aside - Bell has been running these really really bad ads with talking Beavers in them. They are awkward, not funny and just stupid.
I think the main reason i never go to MSN anymore is that it's MSN Sympatico (bell) in canada - and you cant turn it off - no matter who you are with.
Anyway - MSN Lame Beaver ads.com .. ya might want to get out of that one
*hey im back on rogers/Yahoo. maybe you should buy yahoo .. you already gave rogers 500mil
-
^^ Rogers is no better than sympatico. Anyway I don't think these companies will have any motivation to increase the speeds given the Canadian population. The cell phone plans here are the worst in the whole developed/developing world. And the data rates might even drive you to bankruptcy.
