I have a folder on my desktop called files. I just drop 'em in there.

When I need to.

This is very rare. I like to use the "desk" analogy for my desktop space. I have no background (I run Ubuntu, and just use the default [in Windows, I just have a solid colour]) as I do not think that having a desktop background has a point. I have a piece of software to view images, I do not need to view them on my desktop.

I have some icons on the desktop (only files, etc. that I have to access enough for them to warrant the valuable space upon my desktop [they are moved after a while]).

For icons I might change the desktop every few days or weeks due to new work coming up, or needing to store files for transfer in a semi-permanent place.

It is not important for me to change the theme unless I believe that the theme I am using is causing me problems, or is causing my computer to run overly slowly.

I find it odd that people have background images, and often I find that themes people use are not great as well. It is no problem for me. I simply use a very basic looking desktop as I have no need for anything other than that.

desktop junk folder.. usually any icons that haven't been added to truelaunchbar, and files that never got sorted out.

A quick run through of my most favoured apps usually chosen based on features, customizing ability, plugins & built in shortucts..

-XnView(Image) - Very lightweight but fully featured image viewer
-Winamp(Audio) - with Single UI skin, I've yet to put this skin through the photoshop mill.
-Zoomplayer(Video) - Great little/powerful video player
-Maxthon2(Browser) - Puts all other browsers to shame, even in its unfinished state.
-Truelaunchbar(quicklaunch bar replacement) - nuff said, first explorer addon I always install after a fresh format, followed by dmex toolbar for its favourite bar and Foldersize.
-Stroke it(Mouse Gestures) - Mouse gestures for just about anything, using windows just wouldn't be the same without this utility.

if I can find the .theme file I'll make a uncompressed screenshot of it running on a VM. personally I started enjoying them only after moving to a DVI monitor, strangely on VGA those colors look a bit washed out.

the monitor with VGA was also a LCD, this theme always looked fine on the CRTs where I tried it.

I update my desktop very rarely. Before this picture (which I took myself) I used an image from Myst IV for a few years. I don't use hte icons on my desktop mostly, so almost all of them were put there by installers. The most important icon on there is actually "New Text Document.txt", which I use as scratch for anything and everything. Smiley

My current desktop. As you can see I love MSPaint so much I had to bring it along with me. Gimp and Photoshop are overkill much of the times.

MS Paint is certainly something I miss in Linux. I use GNU Paint though; not as good, but it can get quick things done.

What madness is this? They're ever so slightly different things as far as I can tell. Launchy's good for opening stuff without ever touching the mouse, True Launch Bar looks like it requires the mouse and is just a replacement for quicklaunch.

Also, WindowsKey + <Number> is useful for launching from the quicklaunch bar.

To re-create my desktop you will need the following:

The standard "orange flower" image.
"My computer", "User" and "Recycle Bin" icons on the desktop
The Ctrl Key, and a mouse wheel, which you use to make your icons really big, but not quite as big as maximum.

I never used to, until I had kids.  Hormones are funny things ...

I find it quite nice that on the rare occasions that I do see my desktop, I have a randomised picture to see (I use Microsoft Wallpaper changer to change it every 30 minutes or so).

I don't change my desktop wallpaper all that often, when I've found one that a) spans 3840x1200 without distortion and b) has or can be corrected to have an appropriate tonal range, I tend to stick with it.

I'm not sure some brightly coloured backdrop does ones eyes any good poking out from behind and around windows on the desktop - certainly when I'm staring at a screen for many (too many!) hours a day exceptional contrast is what I don't want.

I remember the last time I changed icons, cursors etc, it was when I first installed Windows 95.  I think all that eye candy is something I've just grown out of...

... gazes at OS X desktop (or maybe I just get eye candy fix elsewhere these days!!)
