More than slightly concerning, considering I trust Excel to do basic arithmetic on a regular basis.

(see also

some kind of display thing....

I just did 850 * 77 that gave 65,450.000
then the 850 * 77.100 gave 100,000.000
when I did =d8-c8 i got 85.00

but wnen i manualy entered 100,000 and 65,450 and did the subtract i got 34,550.00

so my off the cuff look says that internally the number is right but the display is wrong.

but yes MSFT needs to see this and jump on it.

What I don't get is why it's base 10 "100000". It's clear that the problem is that the floating point multiplication has overflown the two-byte box that the number has, but it's bizarre to say the least that it chose to

Back in yonder days of old, when I was less lazy than I am now, I'd attack Excel with the stick of debug and give you an actual answer, but Excel is big and I am lazy, so I can't be bothered.

Sadly progrommatic access through excel shows 65535 when it autocasts to a float, double or int, and most of the big financial companies are more prudent than to upgrade their software if the old one works.

That being said, it's unacceptable since grandpa joe might be paying for a bottom-line that has been incorrectly computed by davy-smith and sons local accountants firm ltd.

Official
Excel Blog comes with an explanation and promise of an upcoming fix:

Official Excel Blog Thingie wrote:

So what, specifically, are the values that cause this display problem? Of the 9.214*10^18 different floating point numbers (floating point on wikipedia) that Excel
2007 can store, there are 6 floating point numbers (using binary representation) between 65534.99999999995 and 65535, and 6 between 65535.99999999995 and 65536 that cause this problem. You can’t actually enter these numbers into Excel directly (since Excel
will round to 15 digits on entry), but any calculation returning one of those results will display this issue if the results of the calculation are displayed in a cell.
All other calculation results are not affected.

Or that the display bug is actually a result of a bug in their rounding routine (as displayed values are always rounded to the 15th decimal place).

ROUND() is burden by how it's usually used, that is to represent something to the nearest dollars, for example:

A1 = 0.95 B1 = ROUND(A1) = 1
A2 = 0.95 B2 = ROUND(A2) = 1
B3 = SUM(B1:B2) = 2

In B3, people don't want to see 1.9 -- and even though, you could as easily ROUND(B3)... people want the SUM of B1 : B2 to be the natural SUM of what they see.

So, somehow, ROUND bakes the translated value into the cell... in this case, the value is translated incorrectly.

So, any function that requires baking the translated value into the cell, I think would be subject to this bug.

How embarassing.

Even before the Excel blog was posted, some slashdotters had already demonstrated that this is a display-only bug . See this slashdot sub-thread:
And yet it works FINE when you GRAPH it...

Most of the time people don't read cells themselves, rather automated processes perform spreadsheet calculations, update database with the results, update spreadsheets, etc. Humans normally look at prepared graphs, which apparently isn't affected by this problem.
But this is still very bad for cases where human eyes are looking directly at the cells to read data.
