"Crave hangs with people in high places -- that's how we get exclusives and free food. A few weeks ago we were having a civilised dinner with our friends at Asus and angling for cool stories when we were told in a very hushed manner: "Asus is helping Apple
build a Tablet PC.""
Apple Tablet PC is Real says Asus

If it's as good quality as the macbooks, I'm getting one. I've been looking for a Vista tablet for a while now, and this gives me a chance to dual boot into OSX to try it out.

Assuming they deliver vista tablet drivers.

Asus already makes Windows TabletPCs, they've got the expertise. But that's with Wacom's digitzers[1], the evidence suggests Apple may be putting in their own propriety multitouch digitizer.
[1]Or whatever they usually use.... does Asus use Wacom's?

The 'Mac Tablet' rumour is as old as the hills.
I'll believe it when I see it ... then I'll probably buy it ...

Doesn't a leak of pre-release Apple info usually result in a canned project? I didn't think Steve stood for that kind of thing.

...Mac Pro improvements? The flagship Apple desktop has gone unappreciated ever since the PowerMac G5 was released some 4 and a half years ago. With some brand-spankin' new Intel Xeon chips due out soonish (Q1 2008) let's see if Apple will move away from the unchanged metal case.

on Nov 1st when the MacBook updates were announced I decided I'd wait till January, let Apple sort out the hardware and Leopard and then buy one... this has COMPLETELY THROWN ME

One of my coworkers has a friend that works at Apple, the royal Jobs will plant rumors per dept to catch leaks...problem is...this isn't from Apple this is from Asus.

That guy is clever, I like that tactic. -
Doesn't mean you'll see anything this year, or even next though does it. It's just a rumour.

You think they could have shown us a cleaner screen....this one looks like a mound of skittles was removed from it by an angry class of dirty-finger 5 year olds.

JSampson: That's a stock photo of the "ModBook", an aftermarket mod of an iBook hyped at the last WWDC. It's a third-party thing.

I ended up at an urgent care center a few weekends ago and they had completely updated to using tablets. They are definitely impressive and perfectly suited for that kind of environment.

That's what people want to hear, Apple rarely delivers. Look at how different the iPhone is from what people initially said they wanted (no clickwheel, for example)
I don't think Apple would make an ultaportable or subnotebook laptop. Apple is focusing on high-resolution displays, all the new applications work great when you've got a massive desktop; but an ultraportable/subnotebook would be 1280x720 or less (higher pixel densities are available, but you sacrifice colour fidelity). Apple would have to make sure all their programs are usable at either such a high DPI or with a small desktop. Going by the new dock and "Stacks" this seems unlikely.

Shame ... wouldn't mind something to replace my PowerBook G4 ...
