Look, man.  It was the 70s.  Times were different, and we were all a bit more open to new experiences. 

Say what you will, but I think that Bert and Ernie are both much better people for the experience.

I haven't seen the DVD... but maybe Bert & Ernie were sharing some weed.

Or women were walking around bra-less.

I'm not sure where the "nanny state" comes from.  The government did not force them to include the warning as far as I can tell.
