I figure for all the complaining I do I might as well give myself a platform for it.
Since Microsoft really isn't talking about Windows Seven at all...but we're doing plenty of it...I figure maybe we can post what we want to see out of the next version of Windows. In the event someone listens then great, if not at least we gave our voice....
Worse comes to worse the C9 team deletes this thread.
My Hope:
1. Theme Management like Linux has...
2. "Expose" view like OSX has...
3. Sandbox/Virtualization (Think VMWare Fusion Unity Mode) for OSX and Linux apps.
*sticky? Maybe we can contain speculation here...

Luna and the old file explorer.
Why do you need old explorer, what feature do you miss? -

i think everyone will switch over to linux in 5 years; 2 years if corona_coder is involved in a switch campaign
I'm thinking of installing Linux on an old box I have lying around this minute, never mind two years from now. His depth of forsight, perspicacious, esoteric reasoning and untrammeled authoratative deductions leave me in sheer awe, and apopleptic!
There is only one corona_coder, he is the Oracle here at Channel 9.
I with I was him.
Paraphrasing here- If you have five dollars and corona_coder has five dollars, corona_coder has more money than you.
- There is no 'ctrl' button on corona_coder's computer. corona_coder is always in control.
- Apple pays corona_coder 99 cents every time he listens to a song.
- corona_coder can sneeze with his eyes open.
- corona_coder can eat just one Lay's potato chip.
- corona_coder is suing Myspace for taking the name of what he calls everything around you.
- corona_coder destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.
- corona_coder can kill two stones with one bird.

- corona_coder's compiler is too afraid to report errors.
- corona_coder can make infinite loops end.
- When corona_coder looks at a Windows machine, it bluescreens out of fear.
- Some people check their computers for viruses. Viruses check their computers for corona_coder.
- In an average living room there are 1,242 objects corona_coder could use to destroy Microsoft, including the room itself.

Proper, decent skinning... please.
Must be getting old
Couldn't care less about skinning, always amazes me how much people shout for it.
Same, infact I'm somewhat against the idea.. I just get the feeling windows would turn into a pit of berl bull****...
MOM LOOK, OUR WINDOWS WOBBLE AROUND NOW...
uhhh, great..

Been there, dumped that faster than the slab of meat you woke up with after a really big night out..
Well I say make it availible, warn users they are "using an unsupported feature" and provide GPO's for corp' networks and schools etc... to turn it off.
it's an "Option" for the ones who want it.
that's all.

A new kind of registry system. I know it is programer's fault for massing up registries, but it is just like C++, a more managed C# is around the corner. I am willing to sacrifies some performance as well.
Basically I am thinking of a recoverable registry database. I already have an idea for such design using SQL database.

Of all the "parts" of Windows, I suspect the "kernel" is the least of the problems. Cutler and the team were no dummies, and got that (VMS port?) pretty much right. As a kernel + minimal OS, MinWin looks pretty nifty to me. -
i was going to try KDE for windows.. but it looks to confusing to install

anyone else want to go first? - or already loaded it? -
Well, as a user I just want it to be faster (startup, shutdown and while running) and to use less memory.
As a developer I want all the neat stuff exposed through well documented, easy to use .NET APIs that basically do my job for me

*sticky? Maybe we can contain speculation here...- A "Classic mode" that doesn't suck!
- A default theme designed by the same guys who did Apple's UI. And if you're going to settle on a single colour-scheme make it revolve around a primary colour and not sea-green
- No gimmicks
- Sensible pricing
- A single SKU for home users, not 5
- Starter
- Home Basic
- Home Basic N
- Home Premium
- Ultimate

An interesting question really is... What will they call Windows 7?
It's going to have to be different enough from Vista to sell.
But MS has already sunk $500M into Vista marketing.
But there's such a thing as "good money after bad"
But they don't want to straight-up say "Vista sucks" so they can't deviate too far from it.
I'm still lobbying for Vista Mea Culpa Edition (tm) -- Vista MCE (tm) for short. -
Vista's Sista?
Windows Client 2009
*Win C9 for short..
-
Or to cash in on the other OS enormous popularity:
Vista XP
(oh damn it! I guess MS has been promising the user eXPerience since XP -- doesn't look good...) -
They should probably call it Windows LIVE (consistency)
Or Windows.com - and move everything there (kill LIVE brand)
