Truth in advertising: I own neither, but both are nice.
More Truth In Advertising: I will be buying a Zen Micro.
Now that that's outta the way...
You can find lotsa reviews on portable audio here:
http://portableaudio.engadget.com/
Or CNet's portable audio section: http://reviews.cnet.com/Music/2001-6450_7-0.html?tag=cnetfd.dir
I'm sure a few other folks can recommend review sites.
In the end, you gotta get your hands on each unit and try it yourself. -
i just looked into this for brothers xmas gift..
looks like im going to zen micro also
ipod mini - no fm radio, no calendar, only 4 not 5 gig
plus the rio supports WAY more formats
*another factor was that the ipod mini- in silver or white are basically sold out across toronto
(ive been calling) only pre-orders at most stores - or the ugly green one
id LOVE to get a portable media center - but they are 750$ in toronto ( ipod mini / rio both 349$)
one question: i noticed the rio has .avi support..
does this mean you can plugin to tv and play video with it?

Another selling point for me with Creative's players over Apple's - no software lock in. I can use it like a regular drive instead of having to use proprietary software.

I bought my girlfriend a Rio Forge for the holidays and she seems to really like it. She hasn't used it much but there are a few features I liked:
1) FM Tuner
2) Armband holder comes with it. This was big for her since she wanted it primarily to work out with
3) Takes SD memory so even though I only got the 128mb version I know I can upgrade it quickly if she needs more space.
I'd say this probably isn't as big as what you're looking for but the Rio experience in general has been good so far. I just used the Windows Explorer to copy the files over after I couldn't figure out how to get Media Player to do it for me.

actually what ended up happening is i went to best buy to grab zen micro 5gig - but for 50$ more they had a 20 gig zen touch - no fm or calendar - but 24 hr battery life ( ipod 20gig only 12 hours + more $$)
so i went with that
(hes a musician so hed probably want the ability to move files/songs around as well)
