There is in my opinion a design flaw in Outlook 2003, that being that the 'New Message' window is a window and not part of the main pane like all the other items (read messages, browse folders etc). Does anyone have a method or trick for attaching the
'New Message' window in where read would normally appear?
So I can -

Technically reading mail opens its own window... what you see without opening a window is just the "preview pane".
That aid, composing mail in the preview pane area would be quite spiffy. -

ahockley's exactly right - In particular, there are a boatload of features that can't be used in the reading pane (or preview area).
Things like any kind of encrypted email message (s/mime, rm, etc) can't be viewed in the preview pane.
