Just the other day I realized that we are quickly approaching the 1 year anniversary of Channel 9 on April 5, 2005.  We have had so much fun that time has flown and it just feels like we started this little experiment yesterday.

We have learned so much from each other, we have had some fun, and we have also been frank and honest when needed.  This is the way life should be IMHO Wink

So since we all get to keep our jobs and you got a new place to hang out, what do we do to celebrate our first year of life together?  I have a bunch of ideas in my head, but want to hear yours. 

If we could party together on our 1st birthday, how would you like to party, and what can we give you for a birthday gift for helping make this place what it is today? 

And no ... I can't make Windows open source, let me just get that out of the way Wink

Great idea. Maybe we should do some sort of Microsoft Founders thing on C9, but that may be hard to pull of for our BDay.

I think such would also get some attention toward the site, theres many great interviews here but I still think this site has been gone under the radar for many developers. I could be wrong though.

Sure you may throw up some Real party, along with a ch9 real time chat at the ms.com/chats.. But I think many here are not near Redmond so having lucky few party there would hardly be more than party among ch9 crew and select few.

OK, I think a main thing with C9 is the videos. Another is communication. I remember my last day at Vertigo Software, when they had to close down the Cincinnati office. We had a live web cast at the office. The theme was "A Mexican Beach." We brought in many Coronas. Had the radio on playing reggae the whole day, broadcasting to the San Francisco office. Had a message board up where the SF folks could drop by & leave messages (mostly positive Smiley ). It was fun. Not that it's an ending for C9, of course.

Idea 1)
So, what if you guys set up a live webcast of  your office or something.

Idea 2)
You setup a hosting place & members can upload video messages (w/ moderation of couse) (I think this's been mentioned before)

Idea 3)
You give members w/ ID from 0 - 6975 (why 6975? Oh, just an arbitrary number) some money. Anything would help.

I second these ideas (and the giant inflatable Channel 9 guy one mentioned by ZippyV).  I think random user ID giveaways would be great, too...but ACTIVE users only (spam appearances do not count).  Or:

0) Burn/distribute all the videos onto DVD for those of us with lousy bandwidth.

1) Go a step further with the "name that geek" idea and have a matching contest where you list something unique about a person at Microsoft, and then try to match it up with a photograph of that person. 

Example: a) Secretly stashes extra donuts in their desk when the company delivers them to their department...matches with...1) JonathanH 

2) As mentioned before, an interview with Allen, Gates or Ballmer...off the cuff, no scripts.

MSDN subscriptions would be very nice, although they are rather costly, so they are likely out of the question.

A get together would be much fun, although as stated above, this is an international site, and also I don't think I'd be able to get away from school.

That is a good idea...actually, autographed anything could be cool...from a t-shirt, to a piece of software, etc.  Although I'm not really big on autographed pictures...make it more meaningful by having something software related.  Maybe even by some long time Microsoft employees.  That would make them feel a bit famous, too, and if you said it was for Channel 9, they might do it.  Maybe Paul Allen would sign something.  A model rocket ship, etc.

For those who don't know, Uru - Ages Beyond Myst is a spin-off from the Myst series. Besides a single-player game (that's sadly not as good as the other Myst games), Uru also had an online version, called Uru Live. It was a community where large numbers of gamers could come together to solve puzzles in the Uru universe together, or just to generally hang out. It is one of the best, most immersive online universes I've ever seen. The avatars are detailed, fully customisable and have a great array of actions they can perform. Uru Live is the pinnacle of online virtual communities, as far as I've seen.

Sadly, Uru Live died. It's being revived, in the form of Until Uru (without official support), but I haven't tried that.

Surely MS could hook up either with Until Uru or with Cyan/Ubisoft to arrange a server to be set up so us C9ers can use it to meet for a day? It'd just be too awesome.

Sure, we'd all need a copy of Uru, but those are like €10 nowadays. What's stopping us?

Sadly, Uru Live died. It's being revived, in the form of Until Uru (without official support), but I haven't tried that.
