I just searched for something and I got a couple of results, a couple of them contained stuff from "experts-exchange.com". Which I can't "see" since I need to login. Isn't this against Google rules or something? Is it just me finding it annoying that they come up in the search results but I can't actually visit them? I mean, if a site asks for a login to actually see what you need, shouldn't it get a lower ranking? What's your take on this issue?

I really hate that too. But then I click, in cache and it shows anyway

Bah. Just let the page finish loading and scroll to the far bottom. I say "far" because there are usually quite a few pages of filler prior to the content. What annoys me is that sometimes I blog about a problem I'm having, and when I revisit the problem my only Google results are my blog entries.

I hate those evil monsters over at the peace corps. -
It doesn't work that way anymore, they seem to flag the content so that Google doesn't put it in its cache anymore. Fortunately I have an old account that I can see the answers with (it might be with new ones as well, I'm not sure.)Maddus Mattus said:I really hate that too. EE seems to rank very high these days although it shouldn't. Goes to prove that Google is indeed manually tweaking the search engine to favor large websites.

No doubt EE is buying higher rankings.
Nonetheless, if they continue like this (presenting me search results that are not directly accesible) I will stop using it (little by little). And I think the internet crowd eventually will too. It's not like google is the only search engine and it's not like it's hard to chose another.
I will try to www.live.com a little more, see how long it takes for that to wrub me the wrong way

Would be nice if you could have settings where you could not have results from *.website.com show up at all (e.g. *.lastfm.*). Does any engine have this feature? I know when I'm looking up album covers, I add this to the end of the search string:Maddus Mattus said:Andrei P said:*snip*No doubt EE is buying higher rankings.

-mp3 -torrent -video -lyrics
....and if I don't I get tons of crap in the results. I'd like to have the capabilities of adding a search string like this one to every search request automatically in it's settings. -

But I dont fancy typing; -site:experts-exchange.com with all my search queries. -
I'm sure you can, but there should be some settings somewhere for sites to ignore completely.Maddus Mattus said:Harlequin said:*snip*I think you can, but you must enter it with each search query. I dont know the command by head.

Experts exchange is interesting, it lets google crawl the entire website without logging in. If you want to see the content then just click "Cached Version" on the Google search results and you wont have to login in.
little hack for you there!!!! -

Also, how come nobody made the joke about www.ExpertSexChange.com yet? Or is it too old to be funny any more
(also, I just read some of the stuff on BTB - since you can dupe sites into thinking you're using IE7 when using IE8, and there're tools all over the place for Firefox to change how it's seen... why can't we change it to "Googlebot"?)

The site http://www.helpwithdotnet.com/ excludes "experts-exchange.com" and other sites with pop-ups etc. The default index is changed to work with selected (cherry picked) .NET sites, blogs etc.

I hate those sites... and here's why. A few month ago I was getting an odd error with IIS with an error message that I couldn't find any information about (in terms of what could cause it) ... I did a search, and a expertsexchange link showed up. I went there and there was a question about exactly what I was looking for (IIS said this to me, what causes it and how do I fix it?") and they said (paraphrasing the site here) "join to see the answer to this question". I begrudgingly paid the $ to sign up, and clicked through to see (once again paraphrasing as I don't have access to that page any more) "it is difficult to say what could cause that... try checking through your code and making changes until the problem goes away". Yes, I did get to see a response to that question, but it isn't really the solution/answer that they promise. I flipped out on their support email and cancelled my account...
It is essentially the opposite of everything that I love about the Internet... I love that when you hit a problem you can do a search and find out that someone else has run into the same problem and posted their solution ... some solutions are better than others, but still ... it is the exact reason I started blogging when I was at MSDN, I could post a quick little how-to and get an enormous amount of traffic of people looking for that information. If my information was helpful to even a few % of those people, it was well worth the time to type it up.
bah, experts exchange, bah
I find another site lately though that handled the same style of service much, much better. On this site (JustAnswer.com) I posted a question about a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, and that I'd be willing to pay some amount (seven dollars I think, maybe nine... both #s seem about right in my head) for an answer ... then an expert responded that he'd be happy to answer the question for me for that amount. I was able to look at his profile and see the amount of positive feedback received ... and his credentials (15 years as a Pontiac mechanic), so I accepted his offer of help... he answered my question then I was able to choose if that answer was satisfactory (it was) ... since the answer was complete and what I needed, he got his money... and I felt very happy.
Now the google-faking style of expertsexchange will get more traffic, but I'm never using them again... -
Maybe I don't understand it, but you can just scroll (all the way) down and get the clear text answers (the same answer the hide above by saying you have to join).
For instance:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/2003_Server/Q_23603083.html
But yes, I hate the site as well, lures people into paying cash. -
Well if you didnt cancel they payment, they got what they wanted. They will keep doing this till the money stops.Duncanma said:I hate those sites... and here's why.
