This is pretty sweet. Essentially, it's a way to explore places on earth based on the various photo's people made of it, but they're using intermediate pictures and are manipulating the provided
pictures to make the transition really smooth. So you're no longer flying through a field of dots from one picture to the other, but you're actually starting out in front of the Pantheon, flying through the doorway, and turning to zoom in on some statue.
The high-res video is much better than the flash-based one they have, it really shows off the effects of orbit stabilization, appearance based selection and color optimization.
The bit with the Trevi fountain blew my mind.
Can we please, please have something like this in Live Photo Gallery wave 3? Imagine importing your holiday snaps and then cruising through them based on other pictures people have online.

Um, Photo Tourism is Photosynth.... or more accurately, the original project from which Photosynth is derived from. Same algorithms and such; the only real difference here is that they're showing intermediate images.
What's really cool is that the source code and binaries for it are available now... and it's a GPL-licensed Linux application

Isn't that pretty much what "Photosynth, but more awesome" means? -

Isn't that pretty much what "Photosynth, but more awesome" means?Perhaps something like "Sneak Peek At Future Photosynth Features" would not be able to be misunderstood as someone else one-upping the Photosynth team. Obviously you know what the Photo Tourism connection is to Photosynth, but other people coming across your headline may not.
That is all. And thank you, Bas, for posting the link! I found this when you posted it back in August but never got around to replying. I, too, am looking forward to automated path planning, colour compensation, orbit stabilisation (it is unclear to me whether this is already in effect with the halos in the current build of the photosynth viewer because of the time that photos take to come in over my connection), and 3D Proxy.
