Quick poll: are IE's back buttons off center to you?

Here is IE - normal.  Do the 2 left buttons - look un-centered to side and address bar?

Here they are moved over to be centered and lined up with File: (ignore BG)

*here is why - cause if you mouseover a thing is there.

So the poll question is:

1. Fine as is
2. They should not center something to an invisible aspect of the UI

Im going to entertain this question. What we are talking about is 3 or 4 pixels. so ill start the bidding.

Of course it makes a difference if the back button is centered. how can the world turn, or the planets stay in their respected orbits. every thing must be balanced in order for there to be order.

But yes, they are off center to me.

I wouldn't know. I don't use IE7+'s menu bar

But it's not the back button that's "off-center". It's the non standard menu bar that has a larger margin around the menu header text compared to an app that uses the standard Win32 menu, like Notepad. If they had used the standard menu bar, it would be in closer alignment with the back button, though still not perfect.

I agree with your assessment Jamie, but the down arrow should still be closer to the back/forward buttons, otherwise users could mistakingly relate it to the address bar.

I vote for option 3 ('Meh').

I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out with comparison graphics.  I'm not a graphic designer, so I don't generally notice 1-pixel level alignment errors.

For the most part IE8B2 will serve better than IE7.

I use it for everything ASP.NET, Silverlight, etc.
The new Compatibility button in IE8B2 works much better than IE7 Compatibility mode did in B1.

There are some sites it will still fail on, for that I drag out Firefox 3.0.2

I'm also running Mobile Firefox from a USB stick for tests: http://portableapps.com/
Those Portable Apps work great for testing.

Final note: IE8B2 is syncing with Outlook 2007 Pro, Live mail and all of my RSS feeds with no issues. Works great.

What I'm happy with is that since IE7 came out, IE has been faster starting up. Even during the beta process for IE8 it has been just equal to, or faster than Firefox to give me a usable page from both cold startup and warm. IE always pops up the application faster, and then lags a bit showing my home page, Firefox lags launching the application, but generally has the page loaded faster.

That's all based on my highly unscientific method of selecting both icons and hitting enter.

Now that you mention it I've noticed that but haven't given it much thought.
FF3 on my Vista box does take too long.

I've made all the IIS changes Msft developers have suggested.
As you may know, FF3 is easy to tweak, IIS, FTP, Image resolution.

When I'm working in VS2008 I test with IE8B2 but paste my Cassini links into FF3 to test side-by-side.
